SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCE EDUCATION FEDERAL COLLEGE OF EDUCATION, PANKSHIN INFORMATION ABOUT THE SCHOOL School of Arts and Social Sciences was one of the Schools that were given the approval to run B.Ed. and BA. Ed Programme by the National University commission (NUC) in August 2008 and it took effect from the 2008/2009 Academic Session. The School offers a four year full time programme leading to award of Bachelor of Arts in education (BA. Ed) and Bachelor of Education (B.Ed) However, Direct Entry students join the second year of the programme for the three-year duration. The objectives of the various programmes are based on the College s General Regulations and the National policy on Education to: a. Produce highly motivated and efficient teachers b. Encourage the spirit of enquiry and creativity in teachers. c. Help the teachers fit into the community and society at large and to enhance their commitment to national objectives d. Provide teachers with intellectual and professional background adequate for their assignment and to make them adaptable to any changing situations. 3. PHILOSOPHY AND OBJECTIVE OF THE SCHOOL OF ARTS AND SOCIAL SCIENCES The fundamental concern of Arts disciplines (Humanities) to which School of Arts and Social Science education belongs, according to the NUC approved minimum academic standard, is with man and his complex nature, especially his multifaceted relationships with the world around and beyond. It is in this context that each Art s discipline investigates and explains those aspects of man s nature that particularly concern or challenge him Arts Education therefore pursues with vigour this NUC general philosophy and fundamental principle in training the teachers who will teach students at the post primary levels of Nigerian educational system. General Objectives 1. to develop and enhance students awareness of the values, contributions and potentialities of their own social, cultural and spiritual environment 2. To equip them in contributing meaningfully to the attainment of national goals and the satisfaction of national needs. 3. To instill in them the spirit of self reliance, self-pride and self-actualization.
To ensure that all programmes have built-in mechanism in which national aspirations are affirmed. Such mechanism should take cognizance of the following issue: socio-political developments, the economy of the society, the fact of our pluralistic society and the need to forge a strong and united country.
