INTRODUCTION Throughout 2015, Smurfit Executive Development will be running full-day topic-focused masterclasses facilitated by leaders in their field. They are designed to provide participants with practical outcomes that can be applied in work settings. They adopt an approach that uses workshops, interaction and discussion as key learning tools. Topics fall under four themes: Coaching, Corporate Governance, Sales Strategy and Organisational Development.

MASTERCLASS 1 THE KEY TO EFFECTIVE COACHING Business coaching has gone from fad to fundamental. Leaders and organisations have come to understand how valuable it can be, and they re adding the ability to coach and develop others to the evergrowing list of skills they require in all their managers. In theory, this means more employee development, more efficiently conducted. But in reality, few managers know how to make coaching work. What is coaching? How does it impact performance? And is what I am currently doing aligned to best practice so that I can maximise the impact my coaching has? Join us on this one-day masterclass to discover what is at the core of coaching people, to learn key skills and models to help you leverage best practice as you coach, and through practice, obtain feedback on your coaching style and impact. Attendees will also experience first-hand the benefit of being coached. The masterclass will be highly interactive with a strong focus on practice and experiential learning. Understand what coaching is and how you can use it formally and informally Develop a structure to help you have consistently impactful coaching conversations Receive personal developmental feedback on your own coaching style, skills and impact Understand how to directly link coaching to performance improvement Design an action plan to help you practice and embed coaching into your role Understand how organisations are using coaching in terms of coaching conversations by managers, formal coaching by internal and external coaches, as well as the emerging areas of team coaching and coaching culture. COLM MURPHY Colm is a member of our adjunct faculty and teaches on our Diploma in Business & Executive Coaching and our Leading for High Impact & Results programme. He has significant global experience in leadership and executive development within the I.T. and Professional Services sectors. As a coach and trainer, Colm is passionate about assisting leaders and their teams to achieve meaningful behaviour changes that drive business results through focused and engaging coaching and training interventions. Colm is a strong advocate of focusing on people s strengths and passions in order to help them be truly distinctive and impactful in all aspects of their lives. He uses recognised psychological frameworks in helping clients obtain long lasting changes. The masterclass is designed for individuals interested in entering the field of executive coaching, as well as executives seeking to become better managers and leaders. It is an ideal introduction for managers, leaders, HR people or consultants looking to either start using coaching or as a refresher to ensure your coaching style is leveraging best practice and ensuring a more consistent and impactful experience. DATE: 18TH FEBRUARY 2015 DR GEOFF PELHAM Dr. Geoff Pelham MBACP (Snr. Accred) is Director of Post Graduate Coaching Programmes with PB Coaching. He is a highly experienced Coach Supervisor, Coach, Counsellor and Psychotherapist. Geoff is particularly interested in the education and training of people in work settings, developing their capacities as reflective practitioners and facilitating the integration of knowledge, skills and personal awareness to enhance performance in their professional roles. Geoff also has an extensive background, interest and understanding of the key ideas, writers and research in coaching and related fields, and a talent for presenting complex ideas in a concise and engaging manner. His particular area of interest and research is the importance of the relationship in professional settings. He regularly presents workshops at the annual EMCC conferences, including sessions on evidence based practice, the intelligence of mood and emotion.

MASTERCLASS 2 PRINCIPLES OF GOOD CORPORATE GOVERNANCE DATE: 27TH MARCH 2015 Neglect of corporate governance has led to some catastrophic failures of the largest and best-known companies. A knowledge of governance and the practical skills to implement governance have become increasingly critical for directors, trustees, managers and employees. Understanding the role and responsibilities of company directorship, the value of boards, why they exist and how they should operate are essential for today s governors and managers. This one-day masterclass provides the latest up-to-date theory and practice and the skills to allow you to operate effectively and confidently inside and outside the boardroom. The masterclass will be highly interactive, encouraging participants to share their experiences to facilitate peer-to-peer learning. Real-world directors dilemmas will be discussed and debated during the masterclass. This masterclass is run in partnership with the UCD Centre for Corporate Governance, which was established in 2002. The Centre provides a variety of courses for Irish company directors covering all aspects of corporate governance, from the role of the individual director through to business strategy and company boards. NIAMH BRENNAN Prof. Niamh Brennan is a Science (Microbiology & Biochemistry) graduate of UCD and is Michael MacCormac Professor of Management at the UCD School of Business. Niamh qualified as a chartered accountant with KPMG, holds a PhD from the University of Warwick and more recently qualified as a Chartered Director with the Institute of Directors (London). She is an inaugural honorary fellow of the Institute of Directors in Ireland. Having established the UCD Centre for Corporate Governance in 2002, Niamh plays a leading role in the public discourse in Ireland and internationally on corporate governance. The Centre has provided executive and professional training to thousands of Irish company directors. A former chairman of the Dublin Docklands Development Authority, Niamh has held non-executive directorships with the Health Service Executive, Ulster Bank, Co-operation Ireland, Coillte (Irish state forestry company) and Lifetime Assurance (Bank of Ireland s life assurance subsidiary). Niamh is a regular TV, radio and newspaper contributor. Pierce is a Senior Fellow with the Master of Accounting Programme at UCD Michael Smurfit Graduate Business School, where his specialist subjects are Corporate Governance and Auditing and Assurance Services. He also acts as Corporate Governance Specialist on UCD s Executive Development Programmes and MSc in Strategic Management Accounting. He qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Coopers & Lybrand, now PricewaterhouseCoopers. Pierce is a former President of Chartered Accountants Ireland and a founder member of the Chartered Accountants Joint Ethics Committee. Pierce is a member of The Governance and Byelaw Committee of Chartered Accountants Ireland and The Society of Actuaries Disciplinary Appeal Board. Pierce is currently chairman of a financial services company, is a founder proprietary director of Griffith College Dublin and is a non-executive director of a number of Irish companies involved in Training and Education.

MASTERCLASS 3 A SALES STRATEGY PITSTOP DATE: JUNE 11TH 2015 JOHN O GORMAN John is a Business to Business sales coach who works with sales teams and sales managers across Europe to pinpoint sales performance opportunities and barriers to growth. He has worked in the UK, Germany, US, Canada, Ireland and South Africa selling and marketing high value B2B solutions. John has been recognised as an expert on selling and modern buying by the likes of The Future Selling Institute. John coaches and facilitates sales teams across IT, Professional Services, Media and Financial Services to identify and exploit hidden performance and potential. John s clients include; Sage, Bloomberg, BT, IBM, Arup and UCD. John is the co-author of several books on B2B sales best practice. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce degree, International MBA, Diploma in Executive Coaching & Higher Diploma in Marketing Practice. John s clients include several Fortune 1000 organisations, with five of his client ranked in the top 3 firms in their sectors globally. John is the co-author of three books on B2B sales performance with a fourth on the way. A re-think of the traditional strategy and growth is needed. That re-think is the Sales Strategy Pitsop in this master class participants will be asked to jump into the Pit to determine if their strategies and accelerators can align and deliver the growth they need. MASTERCLASS 4 ORGANISATIONAL DEVELOPMENT AND CHANGE DATE: 3RD SEPTEMBER 2015 The economic crisis and its aftermath, rapid technological advances and changing demographics in the workforce are confronting organisations with significant challenges. This masterclass will look at the organisational change levers available to managers to help them lead and develop enhanced adaptive capabilities in their organisations. Specifically, it will address the main levers for generating change and will look at the key risks in transitioning from a current state to a desired state. Participants will review current theory and practice around organisational development and change management. Participants will bring with them a wealth of experience to the masterclass, therefore the objective will be to blend academic research with practitioner insight so that meaningful and actionable conclusions can be drawn for all participants. The first part of the masterclass will focus on system-wide change and the second part of the masterclass will focus more on the role of the change agent. Content on the day will be broken down into four areas as follows: Linking Strategy and Change Creating alignment between strategic objectives and change initiatives. Translating strategy into meaningful change initiatives. Leading Change The sequence of organisational levers available to steer change initiatives. Managing the sources of resistance to change. Executing Change Identifying the classic traps that lead to failures in executing change. Suggestions on how to avoid the knowing-doing gap. Creating SMART criterion for monitoring and evaluating change. Personal Agenda for Change What are the key change initiatives that participants are working on? DR. KARAN SONPAR Karan is a senior lecturer in management at UCD Smurfit School. His research, teaching and executive development interests are in the areas of behavioral strategy and leadership. His work has been published in leading journals such as MIT Sloan Management Review, Journal of International Business Studies, and Journal of Management. What insights from the class will inform their approach to the change initiatives? Clear identification of the personal behaviours associated with successful change management. Clear identification of the sequence of steps required to advance a planned change initiative; Linking strategy and organisational change; Enhanced appreciation of the reasons for resistance to change and insight into techniques to address resistance to change; How to address and manage the risks associated with the transition phase from the current state to the desired state; Insight into the personal dynamics required to lead change.
