1 PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT PORTFOLIO Opportunities from the Tavistock Institute of Human Relations The Tavistock Institute has pioneered learning for, with and through change for over 65 years. Our professional development portfolio for consultants, leaders and managers of organisational change, supports considered risk-taking and learning for individuals, groups and organisations. Our programmes draw on classic and contemporary Tavistock Institute theories and applications in organisational culture and design, as well as a wide range of other change-oriented theories and methodologies. At the heart of our approach is providing opportunities to learn by experience. Our track record confirms that learning how to respond effectively and adeptly amid the turbulence of organisational life by building on participants own knowledge and learning contributes to expanding organisational capability.
2 The Tavistock Institute of Human Relations has a world-wide reputation for excellence in training and participants choose us because of our reputation for in-depth, thorough theory-based action. Our professional development offer aims to improve skills and knowledge in order to understand complex relationships in their wider context. We provide a rich learning resource for a wide range of professionals. Our alumni, holding senior positions, often global, testify to the fact that participating in our conferences, programmes and courses enhances career progression. We offer a virtual forum called the Group Hub to support all participants in our modular courses and programmes which allows deeper connection between participants and faculty between modules. These programmes take place in small groups, between but usually around 12. Those who come to the Tavistock Institute have often completed their higher professional degrees and are looking to deepen their capacity to lead confidently within uncertain contexts. We have strong links with University partners which support our accredited postgraduate and professional doctorate teaching. As well as Institute programmes, we develop bespoke development opportunities with individuals, teams and organisations on request.
3 GROUP RELATIONS Leicester Conference: Authority Role Organisation An annual event since 1957, this conference offers the most sustained immersion in the experiential learning of Group Relations in the world. This learning develops leadership and managerial capacity to effect change in organisations, through participants living the relationship between role and authority. The conference is residential, 14-days, and attracts an international cohort of participants from diverse backgrounds. It is held in Beaumont Hall in the University of Leicester. A group relations conference is designed to enable participants to understand, in greater depth, the factors behind the exercise of effective leadership and to develop further their own leadership capacities and the leadership potential of others, by generating management goodwill and employee buy-in, and understanding and working with their own and their organisation s resistance to change. If you are interested in leadership and strategy development in groups, organisations, communities and society, then attend the next conference with members of your team. We run and support group relations conferences around the world which use Tavistock methodology - see We can also offer you a bespoke group relations conference tailored to your organisation s particular requirements. The Leicester conference is now part of a study pathway with the Open University Business School, providing 30 postgraduate credits towards their MBA and other Masters courses. The prestigious Open University provides flexible, high quality, distance learning and is the world s largest MBA provider with triple accreditation awarded by the world s leading international management education associations.
4 Coaching for Leadership and Professional Development 4 x 2-day residential modules held just outside London annually Directors: Dr Jim Mackay, Dr Mannie Sher A certificated modular course designed for experienced coaches and other professionals whose role requires coaching competence, taught using Tavistock methodologies. The Tavistock Institute trains coaches with an approach that is underpinned by theories and models of real substance yet is eclectic and fluid enough to address the wide range of issues that confront the senior manager. Drawing on cultural, organisational and psychodynamic perspectives, the course interweaves theory and practice to give participants the perspectives and skills to develop genuinely productive relationships with clients and their organizations. Participants: Independent or external coaches; Senior professionals or consultants in specialist fields (eg finance, law, medicine, commerce) who need to develop interpersonal skills; Senior executives in operational or developmental positions who are responsible for developing their staff and colleagues. This course is now very well-established and renowned in the Coaching community attracting high-calibre participants from all over the world.
5 P3C: Practitioner Certificate in Consulting and Change 1 x 3-day and 4 x 2-day modules held just outside London annually Faculty: Frances Abraham, Dr Eliat Aram, Camilla Child, Juliet Scott A certificated modular programme exploring group learning and organisation change. This exciting and continually evolving 12-month programme draws on classic and contemporary Tavistock expertise in individual learning, group development and organisation change. It offers an opportunity for consultants, leaders and professionals looking to deepen your consulting and change management practice and shape your presence. Who is this for? You are one of a group of international participants looking to gain further practical skills, theoretical confidence and authoritative presence. You learn best with others by conceptualising your experiences, giving and receiving feedback and working on stubborn issues and practice needs. You expect to collaborate with staff and participants to craft the learning environment and programme content and to analyse tasks and processes as a live example of the typical challenges encountered in working with organisation change. You are looking for relevant theoretical frameworks to help you understand your experiences and inform your interventions. You already work with unconscious and hidden dynamics - and are sometimes caught by them. You need to be challenged in order to renew your professional identity. You will work with concepts and theories from the three Tavistock Anthologies (The Socio-Psychological; The Socio-Technical and The Socio-Ecological Perspectives) and draw on a range of contemporary narratives to (1) analyse behaviours in organisational systems undergoing change and (2) design developmental interventions for individuals, groups and organisations.
6 Certificate in Dynamics at Board-Level 4 x 1-day modules held in central London in association with Wedlake Bell LLP Directors: Leslie Brissett, Dr Mannie Sher A certificated modular programme designed to improve the development and support of boards, addressing the unconscious dynamics of boards and using experiential learning. For Trainers, Evaluators, Consultants & Coaches The programme is based on well-established Tavistock Institute approaches addressing the unconscious, working with whole-system dynamics and experiencebased learning. This ensures that what you learn is not just words and theories but creates an integrated programme that addresses both the practical demands and underlying group dynamics of a board. You can expect to come away from the programme with an increased understanding of how to: Expand your teaching, evaluation and consulting capability in ways that help boards to identify their primary task; Manage the tensions between the content of boards working agendas and the underlying pull towards less efficient functioning; Evaluate individual member performance; Support Chairs; Fill skills gaps and create healthily diverse boards; Assist boards in managing their external relationships with stakeholders, executive teams and the rest of the organisation The programme offers theoretical and practical insight on themes including leadership, complexity and board functioning and making use of political skills for improving board effectiveness. Action Learning Sets embed the knowledge and create space to test them in daily work.
7 Working with the Dynamics of Lean Transformations A 2-day workshop in central London Directors: Dr Mannie Sher, James Paterson Organisations across all sectors are striving to add value for customers and stakeholders and to deliver more for less. As a result, leaders and their management teams are working to implement lean efficiency improvement initiatives, organisational restructuring and culture change. Those with experience of leading change will be aware of the challenges that can arise, such as problematic personal, team and system dynamics; for example, risk-averse and dysfunctional political behavior, which leaders themselves can get caught up in. Even when leaders are aware of these dynamics, they may believe that addressing them will divert their focus and slow the change agenda. This workshop will help you through an exploration of the dynamics of lean with a faculty that combines experience in organisational change with expertise in systems dynamics and resistance to change. The workshop provides: Critical evaluation of common assumptions and approaches to lean transformations; Fresh and practical alternative approaches to address the challenges of change; Time for individual learning and insight into group dynamics; A high level of rigour, insight and professionalism, for which the Tavistock Institute is renowned Ongoing on-to-one and group support available after the workshop from the faculty. The workshop explores themes of leadership, complexity, organisational behavior and culture - primarily using a model of Action Learning and case study to embed knowledge that can then be applied.
