Pubs and other stuff Pubs BRITISH BAR Address: Rua Bernadino Costa, 52, Downtown Contact: (+351 2134223679) This Anglo-Portuguese bar close to Cais do Sodré metro station (green line) seems stuck in the 1930s, and literally goes back in time with a famous anticlockwise clock. It has Guinness on tap to satisfy homesick Brits. B'ARTIS Address: Rua do Diario de Noticias, 95-97, Bairro Alto. A cozy bar popular with creative types who enjoy jazz. Wooden furnishings and classic old movie posters give it a decades-old ambience, and its range of snacks and wines is good. 20
ESTADO LIQUIDO Adress: Largo de Santos, 5A Contact: (+351) 213 955 820 Website: http://www.estadoliquido.com This is one of the coolest discobars in Lisbon, from the interior design to the overall relaxed vibe. Upstairs is a hip sushi bar open until late. PORTAS LARGAS Address: Rua da Atalaia, 105, Bairro Alto Contact: (+351) 21 3466 379 and people-watching. Wide doors ("portas largas") open into a popular old-fashioned bar with a marble counter, an old cash register, and blue and white tiles creating a rather rustic look. It is traditionally known as a stopover for gays heading to Fragil across the street, but attracts a mixture of casual drinkers and tourists. Despite the spacious interior, many choose to stand by the doorway chatting 21
Places to see Praça do Comércio - Commerce Square With the Tagus river on its back, the square once known for Terreiro do Paço da Ribeira, presents itself to the visitor in a square shape, with one of the sides opened. The other three sides, with arcade buildings, end by the river. To the north, you can find the arch of the Augusta Street, inspired on the Paris Triumph Arch. In the centre of the square rises the D. José equestrian statue, surrounded by images that symbolise the victory of Lisbon s rebuilding, after the earthquake of 1755. Here, one can find the oldest café of Lisbon, the Martinho da Arcada, from which the presence of Fernando Pessoa is indissociable. (1) National Coaches Museum Considered one of the best of the world on its area, the National Coaches Museum offers the visitors a wide variety of pieces. Cars from the Portuguese Royal House, Gala Coaches from the 16th and 19th centuries, cavalry and shooting harness, uniforms of the Royal House staff, a collection of trumpets and oil paintings of members of the Portuguese Royal Family are some of the things you can see.
