6 VKK2R-8 DIGITAL NOTE Neither the design of the device nor any technical safety aspects may be modified without the express permission of Hottinger Baldwin Messtechnik GmbH. Any modification excludes Hottinger Baldwin Messtechnik GmbH from any and all liability for any damage resulting therefrom. It is strictly forbidden to carry out any repairs and soldering work on the motherboards or to replace any components. Repairs may only be carried out by persons authorized thereto by Hottinger Baldwin Messtechnik GmbH. During installation and when connecting the cables, take action to prevent electrostatic discharge as this may damage the electronics. The required power supply is an extra-low voltage (6...30 V) with safe disconnection from the mains. When connecting additional devices, comply with the safety requirements for electrical measurement, control, regulatory and laboratory equipment (EN61010). All the interconnecting cables must be screened cables. The screen must be connected extensively to ground on both sides.

VKK2R-8 DIGITAL 7 1 Introduction and appropriate use The VKK2R-8 DIGITAL junction box is used to interconnect the serial interfaces (RS-485), the power supply and the RS-485 bus termination. It is preferable for the following products to be wired in the RS-485 bus: Digital transducers: C16i, RTNi, FIT Digital transducer electronics: AED9101A, AED9201A Digital measurement chains with transducer electronics: AD104-R5, AD105 Weighing electronics: WE2108, WE2110 The RS-485 bus can be wired as a 2-wire- or a 4-wire bus. The form of connection to be used will depend on the particular type of digital transducer or measuring amplifier (see the respective Operating Manuals). product C16i RTNi FIT AED9101A AED9201A AD104-R4 AD105 WE2108S/M-485 WE2110 RS-485 bus 4-wire 4-wire 4-wire 2/4-wire 4-wire 4-wire 2-wire 4-wire 4-wire Up to eight digital transducers / measuring amplifiers can be connected together to a VKK2R-8 DIGITAL (connections Load Cell 1..8). The cable to the control computer is connected to the Output clamp. If several junction boxes are needed in a bus, up to 7 digital transducers / measuring amplifiers can be connected to a VKK (connections Load Cell 1..7). Connection Load Cell 8 is then used to connect to the first junction box. The cable to the control computer is connected to the Output clamp.

8 VKK2R-8 DIGITAL 2 Mechanical construction The junction box has the following functions: Mechanical protection (IP65) Power supply for the electrical bus termination Transducer excitation Bus operation for 2-wire and 4-wire RS-485 serial interfaces EMC-tested The connection cable exits the casing via screw connections. Bus termination switch Bus-output 8 th input / Bus-input Fig. 1: Mechanical construction of the VKK2R-8 DIGITAL

VKK2R-8 DIGITAL 9 2.1 Mounting The VKK... junction boxes should preferably be mounted such that the cable bushings point downward (see mounting direction, fig. 2). In this way, better protection against ingress of water is provided. 10 VKK2R-8 DIGITAL 3 Electrical connection A connection diagram is attached to the lid of the VKK2R-8 DIGITAL. When making the connections, please ensure that the cable wires do not protrude beyond the connection clamps (risk of looping). Make sure that the cable screen is properly connected to the screw connections. 3.1 Cable connection Only an interconnecting cable with a screen grounded on two sides (and metal connectors) is to be used as the connecting cable between the VKK and its partner. The screen is brought extensively into contact on both sides at the PG gland (and at the casing of the metal connector). If the partner has no metal connector, the cable screen must be extensively connected to ground. If there are major ground potential differences between the VKK and the peer, an equipotential bonding conductor must also be provided. For optimum results when assembling the cable, proceed as follows: D Cut off outer cable sheath and expose braided screen over a length of approx. 10... 15 mm, depending on the cable diameter. D Push dome nut and lamellar insert with sealing ring onto the cable. D Bend braided screen outwards at a right angle (90 ). D Fold braided screen towards outer sheath, i.e. by another 180. D Push gland base up to braided screen and turn briefly around both sides of thecableaxis. D Push lamellar insert with sealing ring into gland base and snap anti-rotation element into place. D Firmly screw on dome nut. Dome nut Lamellar insert Gland body screened cable Sealing ring Braided screen Fig. 4: Assembly of a connection cable

VKK2R-8 DIGITAL 11 3.2 Clamp connection All nine of the connection blocks in the VKK are interconnected in series. The VKK also contains terminating resistors that can be brought into circuit for the RS-485 bus. Each clamp has the following connections: VKK-Connection Screen TA TB RA RB UB GND Meaning screen connection RS-485, transmitting line A (= T--) RS-485, transmitting line B (=T+) RS-485, receiving line A (=R--) RS-485, receiving line B (=R+) Power supply +, max. 30 V DC Power supply ground TA,TB, RA, RB relate to the 4-wire bus connection. The screen connection should only be used if it is not possible to connect the cable screen in the screw connections. But this may lead to interference (EMC). The choice of bus wiring depends on the digital transducers / measuring amplifiers being used (see the table in section 1). A mixed 2-wire / 4-wire bus version is not possible. Long line lengths (up to 1000 m) can be implemented with the aid of the RS-485 bus driver. The length specification relates to all the cabling (electric main and transducer lines in total).

12 VKK2R-8 DIGITAL 3.3 Power supply The power supply complies with the operating voltage of the digital transducers / measuring amplifiers connected in the particular case. The relevant Operating Manual should be consulted for this. Product Operating voltage range [V DC ] C16i 6...15 RTNi 6...15 FIT, 1st generation 6...15 FIT, 2nd generation 6...30 AED9101A 6...30 AED9201A 18...30 AD104-R4 6...15 AD105 6...15 WE2108 10...30 WE2110 (DC version) 12...24 The minimum supply voltage for the VKK is 6 V DC. The maximum supply voltage for the VKK is 30 V DC. The LED on the circuit board indicates that the supply voltage is present. When several devices and long cables to carry the supply voltage are connected, pay attention to the voltage drop over these cables. 3.4 Connection to a computer The junction box can be wired for two interface variants (2-wire / 4-wire RS-485). When connecting digital transducers / measuring amplifiers to the COM port of a PC (RS-232), you need an interface converter (from : SC232/422B). Basically, screened cables should be used for interface wiring, with the cable screen being connected to the VKK enclosure via the screw connections. The screen of the electric main is connected to the screen of the transducer cable via the VKK screw connections (not to the supply ground).

VKK2R-8 DIGITAL 13 If necessary, a separate cable should be used to produce equipotential bonding between the bus nodes. The cable screen must not be used for this equipotential bonding. For EMC reasons, it is advisable to use a double-screened cable (from the program, for example: 3 x 2 x 0.14 m 2, 4-3301.0071). The transmitting lines only cross the receiving lines at the interface converter (see Fig. 5). This does not apply to the RS-485 2-wire bus. Here all the nodes are wired in parallel (even the master and the interface converter).

14 VKK2R-8 DIGITAL 3.5 RS-485 4-wire bus Using the RS-485 interface, several digital transducers / measuring amplifiers can be connected to a common bus line. Fig. 6 shows the principle of bus cabling for 4-line operation. VKK connection Screen TA TB RA RB UB GND RS-485 4-wire screen connection RS-485, transmitting line A (=T--) RS-485, transmitting line B (=T+) RS-485, receiving line A (=R--) RS-485, receiving line B (=R+) Power supply +, max. 30 V DC Power supply ground Line termination +5 V 1000 Ω TB 4-wire electric main Line termination +5 V 1000 Ω TA 1000 Ω 1000 Ω 1000 Ω +5 V RB 1000 Ω +5 V RA 1000 Ω 1000 Ω TxD on/off RxD TxD on/off RxD TxD on/off RxD Computer = Master Bus nodes: Slave 00...Slave 31 Fig. 6: Bus structure of the 4-wire bus Bus operation of the digital transducers / measuring amplifiers is designed as a master/slave configuration, with the digital transducers / measuring amplifiers implementing the slave function. In the diagram above, the marked terminating resistors of 1000 Ω are important for the electrical function of the bus system. These resistors safeguard the rest level for the receiver on the bus line. The electric main must only be connected to these resistors at the ends of the cables.

VKK2R-8 DIGITAL 15 For the local distribution of bus connections shown in the diagram, the master (generally the control computer with an interface converter) and the most remote VKK contain the terminating resistors. In this VKK, the terminating resistors must be switched on (switch setting at the bus connection ON). The interface converter from basically has bus terminating resistors that are ON. When using several VKKs, it is then only necessary to activate the bus termination in one VKK. It is essential for the bus terminations integrated in the digital transducers / measuring amplifiers to be deactivated (factory setting). Rest level (there is no communication) on the RS-485 electric main is produced in 4-wire operation when: TB -- TA 0.35 V and RB -- RA 0.35 V 3.6 RS-485 2-wire bus Using the RS-485 interface, several digital transducers / measuring amplifiers can be connected to a common bus line. When using several VKKs, it is then only necessary to activate the bus termination in one VKK. It is essential for the bus terminations integrated in the digital transducers / measuring amplifiers to be deactivated (factory setting). For 2-wire operation, the interface converter must be set accordingly (see SC232/422B Operating Manual). However, here the digital transducers / measuring amplifiers must be operated in half-duplex mode (it is essential to set the COFxxx command). The MSV?0; command must not be used, as it is not possible to interrupt data output with the STP; command. Rest level (there is no communication) on the RS-485 electric main is produced in 2-wire operation when: T/RB -- T/RA 0.35 V Communication between the master and the slaves is executed as half-duplex communication (sending a request through the master, then receiving the response from the selected slave).
