First Semester Course Descriptions Engineering Chemistry (TECHEM) 4-hr Lecture & 2-hr Practical Course Description: This course is intended to provide students with the knowledge and skills for understanding the basic principles of engineering chemistry. The course covers topics on Physical and chemical changes, Elements- Compounds-Mixtures, Symbols and Chemical Formulae, Periodic Table, Gases, Atomic structure, Solutions, Chemistry of carbon compounds. The course is supported by digital media, both on CDs and online. Also it is supported by experiments in the laboratory and in virtual chemlab using chemlab software. Technical Mathematics (TMATH) 4-hr Lecture Course Description: At the end of the semester, the student shall be able to solve problems involving vectors and matrices; solve systems of linear equations by Cramer s rule; describe various functions and sketch their graphs; find the derivative of a function and use it for sketching the graph of the function; use the obtained knowledge in professional work. Course Outcomes: At the end of the semester, the student should be able to: Determine vector, operations on vectors. Solve problems involving vectors determine the position vector, the angle between vectors, find the displacement, velocity, acceleration, resultant force, work done, moment of force. Define matrix, dimension of matrix, operations on matrices. Understand a function notation, its domain and range. Graph of a function. Determine the domain and range. Recognize various functions linear function, quadratic function, power functions, reciprocal function. Sketch their graphs. Define gradient, increasing and decreasing functions. Define Maxima and Minima of a function, Even and Odd functions. Describe Exponential and Logarithmic functions, recognize their graphs. Define Derivative of a function. Use table of derivatives. Use the derivative to sketch the graph of a function (and other applications of derivative). Apply formulae for Derivative of sum/difference, Product rule. Quotient rule, Chain rule. Determine higher Derivatives. Find stationary points - maximum and minimum value of function. Application of extreme values of function.

Process Technology Systems (TPTS) Course Description: The student shall be able to understand the different methods of storages used in the chemical industries for liquids, gases and solids and the different methods of processing fluids and solids along with an insight about various safety features that are to be followed while handling gases, liquid and solid materials. Second Semester Course Descriptions Process Instrumentation & Control (TPIC) Course Description: This course is intended to provide students, principles of process control and various industrial measurement techniques. This course also describes various types of control loops and controllers, transducers used for process measurements, control valves and actuators. Measurement methods of fundamental process variables like temperature, pressure, flow and level will be presented. Process Operations & Troubleshooting (TPOT) Course Description: This module discusses about the various industrial processes, terminologies related with these industrial processes, types and equipments related with these processes, their working principles & various troubleshooting methods using simulation software. Transport and Control of Fluids (TTCF) Course Description: The aim of this course is to provide the students with basic principles of Fluid mechanics. It details about the different types of fluids used in process industries & other industrial applications. Also gives more ideas about the properties of fluids, how to determine different properties of fluids. Fundamentals of properties of fluids such as pressure, viscosity, buoyant force etc., their measurements are also dealt here

Third Semester Course Descriptions Technical Math 3 (TMATH 3) Technical Mathematics I (TMATH I) Course Description: This course deals with functions, limits of a function, differentiation, integration and application of differential equation to fluid Mechanics and heat transfer. Analytical Chemistry (TACHEM) General Chemistry II (TCHEM II) Course Description: This course is intended to provide students with the knowledge and skills for understanding the basic principles of analytical chemistry. The course covers topics on Diffraction, Titrimetric Analysis, Electrochemistry, Chromatography and Spectroscopy. The course is supported by digital media, both on CDs and online. Also it is supported by experiments in the laboratory and in virtual chemlab using chemlab software. Chemical Process Calculations I (TCPC I) General Chemistry I (TCHEM I) Course Description: The course deals with common calculations practices involving mass and energy balances in non-reactive and reactive environments. Organization & Communication (TSS) 3-hr Lecture Course Description: This course aims to teach the role of the front line supervisor in process industry. Managerial functions as applied to Supervision of production workers and technicians is emphasized, leadership, counselling, motivation, and human skills are examined. The importance of coordination through communication is emphasized.

Fourth Semester Course Descriptions Chemical Process Calculations II (TCPC II) Chemical Process Calculations I (TCPC I) Course Description: This course stresses the fundamentals of material and energy balances as applied to process engineering problems. This includes the study of mechanical energy balances, steam tables, balances with chemical reaction, the first and second laws of thermodynamics, energy cycles, and unsteady state balances. Statistical Quality Control (TSQC) Technical Mathematics I (TMATH I) Course Description: This course deals with the components of statistics including techniques of collection, presentation, analysis and interpretation of numerical data as applied to statistical control. Stress application of correlation methods, analysis of variance, dispersion, sampling quality control, and reliability Engineering Materials (TEM) 2-hr Lecture & 1-hr Practical General Chemistry I (TCHEM I) Course Description: The aim of this module is to provide the student with fundamental knowledge on characteristic properties of materials and their applications in the process industry. Heat Transfer & Heat Exchangers (THTX) Course Description: The aim of this module is to teach students about the various modes of heat transfer, calculation of heat transfer from various geometrical bodies, design and selection of heat exchangers.

Fifth Semester Course Descriptions Separation Columns (TSCOL) Course Description: This course introduces students to basic principles of mass transfer operations and their applications in the process industry. It covers principally the common separation columns such as absorption, adsorption, distillation, and drying. Description of the equipment used for the above operations, is also dealt with. Process Economics & Industrial Management (TPEIM) Technical Math II (TMATH II) Course Description: This course discusses how process operations engineers gain adequate knowledge in managing Men, Materials, Machineries Money and Market by covering the principles of management and organization as well as interest, investment costs and cost estimations. Business Correspondence & Communication (TBCC) 3-hr Lecture Course Description: Development of writing and presentation skills to produce effective business communications. The student will compose, produce, and present effective business documents appropriate to meet industry standards and demonstrate the importance of coherent, ethical communication principles in business and industry. Chemical Process Calculations III (TCPC III) Chemical Process Calculations I (TCPC I) Course Description: This course covers those aspects of the mechanical design of process plant that are of particular interest to process engineers. The main topic considered is the General design procedure, Equipment classification, Various components of process equipment, Design parameters, and the design of pressure vessels. The design of storage tanks, pipe lines, and tall vertical vessels are also discussed.

Sixth Semester Course Descriptions Health and Safety Environmental for Supervisors (THSES) 3-hr Lecture Course Description: This course stresses the fundamentals of the legal framework and benefits of good Health and safety. It also gives each student the understanding of their responsibilities and a good grounding in the importance of Health and Safety in the workplace. The course also introduces the student to the main aspects of water and air pollution and solid waste. Sources, means of assessment and treatment and control processes as well as recycling and disposal procedures are studied. Local and international environmental standards will be introduced when covering each topic. The course will also include the study of selected important topics of social and global concern related to the subject of environmental pollution. Process Unit Start up & Shut Down (TPSS) 1-hr Lecture & 3-hr Practical Process Instrumentation I (TPIC I) Course Description: This course combines equipment systems into operational units with an emphasis on instruction for start-up, normal operation, abnormal/emergency operations, and shutdown of an entire process and to apply knowledge of process variables, indicators and controllers, troubleshooting tools, and troubleshooting steps to solve problems in a process system. Credit Points: 40 Final Year Project (TPRO) 2- to 10-hr lab Course Description: A project in process operations technology designed to provide the student with practical application of skills and knowledge gained in other courses. This will involve a process conception, a selection among alternatives, flow-sheet preparation, some equipment selection, costing, economic analysis, and design project reporting. Supporting topics such as plant safety and start-up, normal operation, abnormal/emergency operations, will be discussed also. This is done through a design project by a group of 3-4 students under the supervision of a faculty member.
