1 GENERAL STRUCTURE AND ORGANISATION OF THE CHEMICAL ENGINEERING DEGREE IN THE UNIVERSITY OF VALENCIA The programme is taught within the framework of a modular, semester-based scheme. Assessment is based on a credit accumulation scheme. In each semester (or year) students have to study a determined number of modules. The credits assigned to each module depend on the dedication of the module. The equivalency is :1 credit = 10 hours, in which are included Lectures, Labs, Seminars,, but not private study hours. Nevertheless, as a year as about 60 credits, for practical effects 1 Spanish credit could be considered like 1 credit ECTS. The modules are divided into three types. 1) Compulsory modules (75 % of the credits), 2) Optional Modules (15 %) and 3) Modules of Free Option (10 %). The credit distribution by type of module, cycle and year can be seen in Table 1. Some of the compulsory modules have annual character (two consecutive semesters). Table 1. Every academic year amounts 66 credits, roughly. Most of compulsory modules are commons in every Spanish University (designed by the Spanish Educational Organism), for a determined degree. Each university select also a determined number of compulsory modules. The semester distribution of the 1

Students have to choose between the elective modules in order to get enough credits in this type of modules. Elective modules are in very close relationship with the degree studies. Elective modules for the Chemical Engineering Degree are showed in Table 4. Modules are distributed into cycles 1 or 2 depending on difficulty or previous 3

4 knowledge. The division of the modules into the semester in which they are taught (autumn or spring) can undergo changes. Students can choose, freely, a determined number of credits (10 % of the total, in a determined degree), between those offered by the university for any degree (for example: foreign languages). An excess of elective credits is considered as free option credits. Table 4.
