1. Purpose This Practice defines the COMMON LANGUAGE standard code representation for station switching systems. Listed are codes for different types of PBX, Centrex and Special Service Switching Systems now in service. 2. Scope This Practice applies primarily to organizations with the following responsibilities: Distribution Service Switching Operations. The codes are particularly applicable, but not limited, to the following functions: Distribution Service Facility Assignment Investment and Inventory Management Distribution Services Engineering Distribution Equipment Purchasing Central Office Engineering Service Order Assignment. Unless specified as being COMMON LANGUAGE data, do not combine COMMON LANGUAGE station switching systems representation with other coded representations, or with each other. Only combinations or sequences specified in this, or other COMMON LANGUAGE practices, are standard. 3. Reason for Issue This Practice is being re-issued to reflect additional switching system codes, to add Table E, and to conform to current format standards. 4. General Questions concerning these codes should be directed through the appropriate Bellcore customer contact to Executive Director, Language Standards Department, Bellcore. The Bellcore Language Standards Department maintains the General Code Sets. Input is provided by the General Codes Technical Advisory Group, in accordance with the 2

procedure outlined in BR 751-000-102, "COMMON LANGUAGE Abbreviation and Code Set Procedures. 5. Switching System Codes - Private Branch Exchange (PBX), Centrex and Special Service Station switching systems are usually located on the premises of the customer, and have the following facilities for interconnecting the telephone stations they serve: Central Office Trunk Connection Branch Exchange Trunk Connection Switched Service Network Connection. The data values described in this section pertain to Switching Systems Private Branch Exchange (PBX), Centrex and Special Service only. Refer to BR 751-100-445 for Switching System Central Office COMMON LANGUAGE Codes, or to BR 751-100-450 for COMMON LANGUAGE Central Office Packet Switching System Codes. Table A contains a list of AT&T PBX Dial Switching Systems. Table B lists AT&T PBX Switchboards and Consoles. Table C lists other PBX Switching Systems and Table D lists AT&T PBX Special Switching Systems. Table E lists all switching systems and their codes in alphabetic order. In addition, each table contains codes corresponding to respective data values. The Switching Systems Private Branch Exchange (PBX), Centrex and Special Service COMMON LANGUAGE codes are one- to four-character alphanumeric-mnemonic codes. These codes uniquely identify all types of PBX, Centrex and Special Service Switching Systems available at a subscriber s location. Codes 2NB and 4NB in Table A identify twoand four-wire systems when none of the other codes for PBX switching systems are applicable. 3
