1 One of the main problems that we have detected in our customers is the way to integrate the VoIP equipment to their PABX or local Telephone system. For this reason we have developed this document that you can download here with PDF of format: We sell, install and support Panasonic Telephone System totally integrated with our Proprietary Voice over IP Telephone Network. VOIP Compatibility & Interoperability Technical Sheet Update PN S , Rev. A This document provides information on connecting a International Channel Private Network Voice over IP specially designed for your company by and/or its associates to any of several PBX systems, as well as interoperability with various 3 rd party hardware and software products. PBX Compatibility In general, the VOIPs can attach to any PBX that has analog extensions, analog CO ports, or analog E&M ports available. Below is a set of general rules that can help determine if the VOIP is compatible with a particular PBX system: if the PBX supports FXS/FXO or E&M analog ports, the MultiVOIP will work with the PBX if the PBX system lets you hook up an analog phone or analog fax machine, the MultiVOIP will work with the PBX if the PBX or key system uses proprietary RJ11 wiring, the MultiVOIP will not work with the PBX or key system Page 1 of 6
2 Warning: POTS lines should never be plugged into a VOIP port configured for FXS. This document cannot and does not cover all of the PBX manufacturers in the world, nor does it cover all of the PBX models built by each manufacturer listed herein. This document was accurate at the time of release; please check our web site ( for possible updates to this information. If you are aware of any inaccuracies or additional information helpful to this document, please forward the information to us at [email protected]. Note: This document contain links to sites on the Internet which are owned and operated by third parties. Ofinet, Inc. is not responsible for the content of any such third-party site. A PBX is a circuit-switching device; voice-over-data equipment interfaces must emulate one of the 4 circuit types the PBX recognizes: analog trunk, digital trunk, analog line, and digital line. Line-side connections must adhere to the expected behavior of an analog phone line. The PBX (or PSTN) end of the line furnishes battery power, rings, and busy tones; it also interprets dialed digits. This interface is called a foreign exchange station (FXS) port. An equipment interface emulating a phone set is called foreign exchange office (FXO) port. Line-side voice-over-data connections mimic these interfaces. Warning: POTS lines should never be plugged into a VOIP port configured for FXS. Below is a general description of VOIP interface Type support: The VOIP supports E&M types I - V. The VOIP FXO port is similar to other manufacturer s FXO 1 and FXO 2. The VOIP FXS port is similar to other manufacturer s FXS 1. Note: Some manufacturers specify support of FXS 2, suggesting that FXS 2 is used for direct connection to a 2-wire telephone for PSTN applications. The VOIP FXS ports are not meant to connect to the PSTN, and do not support what they call FXS 2. PBX Manufacturers in this document: Ackerman Alcatel Altigen Artisoft Avaya BBS Telecom Conexant Dialogic Ericsson Excel Fujitsu Hitachi ICSTelecom Lucent Mitel NEC Nortel Panasonic Philips Plexus Praxon Rockwell Sattel Siemens Toshiba The current list (at the time of this document s release) of PBX and PABX equipment with which the VOIP is tested and approved includes: Avaya Merlin Magix, Legend, Definity Plexus NEC 2400 SDS SP Lucent Network Alchemy PABX Artisoft PBX Praxon Corp. PBXs ATT PANASONIC Page 2 of 6
3 PBX Support in the VOIP The H.323 protocol can support all combinations of PBX connectivity. The information here is accurate at the time of release; for the latest information ask for details. Our proprietary implementation supports three main types of connections: FXS, FXO, and E&M. Following are examples of such combinations: An FXS-to-FXS circuit may use a standard (analog) telephone or key telephone system connected at each endpoint. An FXS-to-FXO circuit may use a standard (analog) telephone or key telephone system at one end and uses an analog PBX extension at the other endpoint. An FXO-to-FXO circuit uses an analog PBX extension at each endpoint. An E&M-to-E&M circuit uses PBX trunk card connections at each endpoint. Other combinations include: o E&M wink to FXS ground o E&M dial tone to FXS loop o E&M dial tone to FXO loop The VOIP supports connections to standard (analog) telephones and key telephone systems using its FXS port(s). Station-side (extension) connections to the PBX are done by connecting the VOIP's FXO port to an analog station-side (extension) port on the PBX. Trunk connections to the PBX require a special (analog) trunk card within the PBX and use the E&M port on the VOIP. If one of the VOIPs is connected to a PBX trunk, then the corresponding channel in the other VOIP must be connected to another E&M circuit or to a standard (analog) telephone or key telephone system. PBX Manufacturers Ackerman - Euracom small systems; supports up to 30 extensions; small ISPBX (ISDN PBX) systems Alcatel: PBXs (Home page): Networking for Enterprises: Alcatel for Small & Medium Business: Altigen - PBX with integral IP Gateway (up to 160 extensions) AltiGen s mission is to offer businesses with users advanced telephone system features.
