(Law and Regulatory Gazette), p. 82), last amended by the Act of March 19, 2009 (GVBl. p. 70): Table of contents: 1 Scope of application 2 Academic objectives 3 Program structure 4 Academic content, credit for courses taken 5 Program plan 6 Course types 7 Admission requirements 8 Start of program 9 Entry into force Appendix to the study regulations: program overview 1 Scope of application These study regulations, in conjunction with the ination regulations in the then-applicable version thereof, govern the objective, content, and structure of the master s degree program in Water Engineering at Technische Universität Berlin in El Gouna, Egypt. 2 Academic objectives The objective of the program is to provide students with shared theoretical and practiceoriented knowledge in the field of water engineering, taking into account the students varying previous knowledge. The program aims to teach students how to take a holistic, interdisciplinary approach, in line with the principles of sustainability, to dealing with water as a resource, and to provide students with interdisciplinary and cross-cultural competence. Students in the program should, first, acquire the ability to design and structure ambitious water engineering projects and efficiently implement those projects in line with the principles of sustainability. Ability to interface with others, first-rate leadership skills, and management skills are particular topics of focus in this regard. Furthermore, the program aims to enable students to develop academic and scientific problemsolving strategies and processes and implement them in accordance with demand and based on specific projects, with the inclusion of state-of-theart technologies. Students should in turn also be able to reflect abstractly on phenomena observed in practice and practical insights in order to contribute these factors to the academic and scientific discourse in the specific field for the purpose of further developing problem-solving strategies and processes. 3 Program structure (1) The master s degree program in Water Engineering is four semesters long. The academic portion of the program covers the fields of water treatment, water science, hydro-engineering infrastructure, interdisciplinary studies and crosscultural competence, an internship in industry, and the master s thesis. Courses primarily take place during the first three semesters. During the fourth semester, students focus in particular on writing the master s thesis. In the fields of interdisciplinary studies and cross-cultural competence, students participate in integrated projects in interdisciplinary courses on complex topics in water engineering. Students also participate in field trip regarding water management in Germany and acquire cross-cultural competence. (2) During the first semester, students are introduced to the principles of water treatment techniques, water science, and water-related infrastructure, taking into account the conditions that apply in arid regions. Students also apply the basic knowledge they have acquired as part of an integrated water management project. In the second semester, students acquire further knowledge by taking advanced course modules. Their knowledge is also enhanced by an internship in the field of water engineering outside of the university setting and by integrated courses on intercultural communications. In the third semester, the practical portion of the master s degree program is intensified by another integrated water management project and a field trip regarding water management in Germany. The academic program takes increasing note of the economic aspect and interdisciplinary context of water as a resource. During the fourth semester, students independently start working with areas that present particular challenges and issues in water engineering as part of the master s thesis, developing potential

approaches to resolving these issues under the supervision of faculty members and instructors. In the interdisciplinary seminar, which is held jointly with the programs in Urban Development and Energy Engineering, students take a closer look at holistic approaches and interdisciplinary aspects. 4 Academic content, credit for courses taken (1) A total of 120 credits under the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS) are awarded for the entire academic program. For an overview of the recommended way to complete the program, please see the appendix. (2) The 120 credits are allocated as follows to the specific areas of study: Water treatment Water science Hydro-engineering infrastructure Interdisciplinary studies and crosscultural competence Industry internship Master s thesis TOTAL ECTS 22 credits 22 credits 15 credits 28 credits 27 credits 120 credits The credits serve as a quantitative indication of the workload and comprise not only actual classroom instruction, but also the time needed to prepare and study academic materials (classroom attendance and self-study) and the time and effort involved in inations and preparations for inations, including the master s thesis and internships. One credit is based on a workload of about 30 hours. 5 Program plan (1) The content of the specific modules is as shown in the program schedule and the module descriptions. (2) Courses are held in English. (3) The person responsible for each module writes a module description that includes the following points: Content and qualification objectives Types of instruction Courses and course types Participation prerequisites Module applicability Workload Credits and grades Prerequisites for awarding of credits Module duration and how often it is offered. The program schedule, module descriptions, and lists of modules must be provided to students in the form of a module handbook. 6 Course types The academic content of the modules is provided in the following course types: Lectures (LEC): In a lecture course, teaching staff teach students the material in regular lecture sessions. Integrated courses (IC): Integrated courses deal with topics in various methodological forms. Seminars (SEM): Seminars encourage independent academic and scientific exploration and deepening of students knowledge on specific topics and issues. Field trips (FT): Field trips allow students to attend instruction and gain knowledge in the field, outside of the university setting. They also aim to provide students with insight into potential later fields of employment. Internships (INT): Internships are experimental exercises in which students implement the theoretical knowledge they have acquired in other courses via specific real-world ples and have the opportunity to gain insight through independent work. Industry internship (I INT): This internship may be completed at any facility or institution that works in the field of water engineering anywhere in the world. The Board of Examiners (Prüfungsausschuss) advises students on the suitability of particular facilities or institutions. The Board of Examiners is also responsible for acknowledging industry internships. Industry internships are not graded. 7 Admissions Admissions are governed by the admission regulations. 8 Start of program The program begins as of each winter semester. 9 Entry into force These study regulations shall enter into force as of the 2011/2012 winter semester, and in no event after the day following the date of publication he-

(10) The master s thesis must be prepared as a written report in English or German. (11) Candidates are permitted to write a joint or group master s thesis upon a request to the Board of Examiners to that effect. (12) After the master s thesis has been completed, it must be submitted in duplicate to the appropriate body within the Central University Administration, which will record the time of submission and forward the thesis for evaluation and grading. Any master s thesis not submitted on time will earn the grade of 5.0 and an overall comment that it is insufficient (nicht ausreichend). If the student cites good reason for his or her failure to submit the thesis on time, the provisions of Sec. 6, sixth sentence, above apply accordingly. (13) The master s thesis is generally required to be reviewed and graded by the supervisor and one other reviewer who is authorized to administer inations. The second reviewer may be a member of the faculty of a different program at Technische Universität Berlin or another higher education institution or a qualified person from the practice of water engineering (e.g., companies in

the field of water engineering, engineering firms, government agencies, research institutions). After the master s thesis is submitted, a grade and overall comment (Urteil) must be communicated in accordance with the table set out in 11 (1) AllgPO. If the reviewers do not agree in their assessment, the arithmetic mean will be calculated. If one of the reviewers issues the overall comment of insufficient (nicht ausreichend) for the thesis, the paper is deemed not to have passed. Upon the request of the candidate, the Board of Examiners will appoint a third reviewer. If this third reviewer also evaluates the thesis as insufficient (nicht ausreichend), the paper is deemed not to have passed. Otherwise, the arithmetic mean of the two passing grades will be calculated. (14) The thesis grade will be communicated without delay, and if at all possible within one month after submission of the master s thesis. Upon request, a notice regarding whether or not the master s thesis has passed must be issued to students within three weeks. (15) Candidates who receive a failing grade on the master s thesis are permitted to repeat the master s thesis one time only. 7 Entry into force These ination regulations shall enter into force as of the 20119/2012 winter semester, and in no event after the day following the date of publication hereof in the Amtliches Mitteilungsblatt (Official Bulletin) of Technische Universität Berlin.
