By the time you read this, I ll have seen the Rush Creek Yacht Club for the first time in my life. Driving to and from the Southeast Circuit locations used to be an adventure, but now it is getting a little old. It was more fun when Sue was one of the co-pilots, and she could read to us from the tabloids about Brittney s latest outrageous behavior, or Lindsay s recent stint in rehab. Still, I have never raced in Dallas before, so I am looking forward to the sailing even if I am dreading the drive. An e-mail came across my computer last week suggesting that there is a Tampa Bay yacht club expressing interest in running a Midwinter regatta for the J/22s. Stay tuned. In January, J/22s were displayed at boat shows in Toronto, Canada and Bonn, Germany. New J/22s are currently being built in the United States and in Europe. I have had several e-mails from Europeans looking for charter boats for the Worlds in Rochester. These are indications of strength. I anticipate an impressive showing in Rochester for the Worlds in August, and that will be an excellent barometer of the fortitude of our Class. And speaking of the Worlds, Rochester is a great venue for a championship regatta with a long history of excellent race management and good on-shore entertainment. For those of you looking to bone up on Doyle trivia, I have been told that my mother, who was then a stewardess (they re now called flight attendants) on Mohawk Airlines (which begat Alleghany Airlines, which begat US Air, which begat US Airways), first met my father in the mid-1950s when he was doing a Six Meter regatta at the Rochester Yacht Club. Their 51-plus year marriage has lasted longer (and arguably has been far more successful) than Mohawk Airlines. So, come to the Worlds, and maybe you ll meet that special someone too! There are a few projects that I am working on that may have some impact on the Class. As reported in my last letter to you, your Class Officers are working on some rules changes. These changes are intended to clarify the hiking and weigh-in rules, correct some language problems with the existing Rules, and also allow some additional latitude in the size of the line used in the main and jib halyards, and the mainsheet. We hope to have these rule changes passed and effective March 1, 2009. But there are some aspects of the procedure over which we have no control. More later. The other project is an application to the ISAF for the J/22 to be the platform for Women s Match Racing at the 2012 Olympics. This application is due March 15, and I am very excited and proud to recommend our boat for consideration. I am working with the builders, J Boats and a few of the European members of the International Class on this initiative, and everyone has been extremely supportive. We will not know the result of our application until November. Until then, there is plenty of sailing to do, and I hope to see you in Dallas, Annapolis, Toronto, Cleveland, Buffalo, Youngstown, Rochester or Lake George. Continued from cover... Ultimate Marine Group J/22 World Championship The Straight Skinny Photos courtesy of Tim Wilkes When? August 17-24, 2008 Where? Rochester Yacht Club in Rochester, New York, USA What is the investment for all this fun? Entry fee is $425.00 for entries completed by July 10, 2008 and $575.00 after July 10, 2008. All registrations must be received by Monday, August 11, 2008. The entry fee includes storage from August 16-24, 2008, launching and racing, and tickets for all competitors to social events. An entry form will be available online at www.2008j22worlds.com. Will I be in the Silver fleet? If there are more than 60 boats registered, the Organizing Authority can decide to divide the contestants into two fleets with a Qualifying and Final Series. It is more likely the number of entrants will need to be over 75 or 80 before a fleet split is considered. If there is a Qualifying Series, the Organizing Authority will divide the competitors into four groups of as nearly equal size as possible, which will sail in alternating combinations. Based on the results of the Qualifying Series, the fleet will be divided into a Gold Fleet and a Silver Fleet for the Final Series. If three qualification races are completed on Day 1, the Qualification Series will be complete and the fleet will be split; eleven races will be scheduled days 2-5 for the Final Series. What is the plan? Sunday, August 17 - Early Arrival Registration & Measurement (1500-1800) Monday, August 18 - Registration & Measurement (0900-1800) Tuesday, August 19 - Registration & Measurement (0900-1600), Practice Race (Warning at 1400) Wednesday, August 20 - Racing Day 1 (Warning signal at 1000) Thursday, August 21 - Racing Day 2 (Warning signal at 1000) Friday, August 22 - Racing Day 3 (Warning signal at 1000) Saturday, August 23 Racing Day 4 (Warning signal at 1000) Sunday, August 24 - Racing Day 5 (Warning signal at 1000; no race to start after 1330) and Awards Presentation (Target Time 1600) Will they check out my boat? All boats shall be in possession of a valid IJ22CA Measurement Certificate. All competing boats must be available at the Rochester Yacht Club by August 19, 2008 for verification of conformity with Class rules during the measurement hours. Plan to arrive no later than 0900 to start measurement. During the regatta, checks on conformity with Class rules (including measurement requirements) may be performed at any time. First time measurement will be available prior to August 17, 2008 by appointment only. Only one suit of sails may be used for the entire regatta. The sails for each boat shall be measured and stamped by an IJ22CA measurer. Where is the dance floor? Lake Ontario, North of the Genesee River mouth. Very comfortable 72 degree water; average winds 7-15 knots. When the wind blows hard from Canada, the dance floor can get wavy. 4 United States J/22
Do I get a mulligan? The Low Point Scoring System of RRS Appendix A will apply to all races. Four races are required to be completed to constitute a series. When fewer than five races have been completed, a boat s series score will be the total of her race scores. When five or more races have been completed, a boat s series score will be the total of her race scores excluding her worst score. Will my boat be wet all week? Boats shall be kept on the assigned docks in the RYC harbor. Fenders and mooring lines will be required. Boats shall be prepared to raft up during the event. All boats are to be afloat by 2000 hours on Tuesday, August 19, 2008. What about the hardware? If the fleet is not divided, prizes will be awarded to the top ten skippers and crew. If the fleet is split, prizes will be awarded to the top five skippers and crew in the Gold Division, and to the top five skippers and crew in the Silver Division. The Masters prize will be awarded to the highest placing boat entered with a Master s designation. To be eligible, the skipper shall be age 55 or older and the average age of skipper and crew shall be greater than 40 on August 20, 2008. Other prizes may be awarded at the discretion of the Organizing Authority. What other documents will I need? Competitors shall comply with the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) eligibility code (ISAF Regulation 19) which requires that all competitors (helmspersons and all other crew) shall be members of US SAILING or their Member National Authority or one of its affiliated organizations. The Yacht Club or organization name and membership details shall be stated on the entry form. Proof of membership shall be presented at registration. In addition, each participating boat shall be insured with valid third-party liability insurance with a minimum cover of $300,000 USD per event or the equivalent. Proof of insurance is required during registration. Where can we crash at night? There is an extensive list of available motels/hotels on the website. Limited housing is available with Club members. If you are interested in staying with a member, contact Lambert Lia at llai1@rochester.rr.com prior to June 1, 2008. The organizers will try to accommodate your request. What if I can not attend but would like to have my boat generate some cash for a change? The website has a charter Classified section to list the boat. Insurance information is also there. Depending on the boat s trick, your boat could bring you $3,000 or more. What if I just want to bum a boat for the regatta? Kris Werner of RCR Yachts is the charter liason if you have any questions (kris@rcryachts.com). Check out the boats listed in the charter section on the website. What is the event website? Special for the J/22 Class newsletter US Sailing s Rolex International Women s Keelboat C Houston Yacht Club ran the 39-boat regatta on Galveston Bay Organizers of US SAILING s Rolex International Women s Keelboat Championship the first world sailing competition created for women have announced the dates for the next running of this biennial event. Houston Yacht Club (HYC) in La Porte, Texas will once again host the regatta, scheduled for October 14-17, 2009. As part of US SAILING s Championship calendar, the event s mission is to provide women sailors of all ability levels with high-quality racing and an opportunity to compete against top national and international sailors, while providing skills development through nationwide Road to Rolex clinics and mentoring to young women through the Next Step to Rolex program and the Junior Road to Rolex clinic. The current champion, Sally Barkow (Nashotah, Wis.), recently received US SAILING s highest honor as the 2007 Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year based in part on her accomplishment of winning the Rolex IWKC a third straight time. Taking the helm of the local organizing committee is Marie Wise (Houston), while Taran Teague (Annapolis, Md.) will step into the role as chair of US SAILING s International Women s Keelboat Committee, which oversees the Rolex IWKC. Founded in 1985 by US SAILING and considered one of the world s pinnacle events for women sailors, the Rolex IWKC utilizes the International J/22 class keelboat, suitable for four-person teams. There are so many ways in which this regatta brings out the best in our sailing community, both locally and internationally, said Wise, who competed in the 2007 running. There is such camaraderie between teams such friendliness and at the same time some of the fiercest competition to be had on the water. That is exactly why Houston Yacht Club is proud to be host again in 2009. Our club brings a spirit of southern hospitality to the top-level competition that this regatta is known for, and we are planning for even more teams, more guests, more fun, and, of course, some awesome racing. We are looking forward to welcoming everyone to Houston for another extraordinary regatta. As local chair for the 2005 Rolex IWKC, Taran Teague brings a unique perspective to her role as the national committee chair. A certified national race officer, she served as the co-principal race officer at the 2007 event in Houston. Teague echoed Wise s thoughts on the special qualities evident at each running of the regatta. We all learned that when you are in Texas everything is big. As Ginny Garrett, the 2007 HYC regatta chair, passes the helm to Marie for the 2009 regatta, we are confident that Houston YC will come through with Texas hospitality, and do another horizon job in regatta and on-the-course race management, she said. Already we have received inquiries from competitors, both here and abroad, looking to add the Rolex IWKC to their sailing resumes. It is an unforgettable experience for women sailors. I really encourage anyone who has not taken part to explore the idea of forming a team and competing in 2009. 8 United States J/22
hampionship Returns to Houston Yacht Club in 2009 Over 150 women on 39 teams competed in the 11th running of the world s first international regatta created for women. All photos courtesy of Dan Nerney/Rolex Competition and Camaraderie: There is perhaps no other regatta like the Rolex IWKC in the world. Known for its tough one-design competition, the regatta is equally loved by competitors for its shore side hospitality. The specifics: A popular 11-races in four days format. Racing is preceded by two days for registration, measurement and a practice race a great way for teams that are new to J/22s to get some extra time against the fleet. The regatta typically attracts between 30 and 50 teams representing eight to 12 countries The regatta does not require qualification for entry, only that each team becomes a member of its country s national governing authority for sailing. Previous competitors have included Olympic medalists, America s Cup and Volvo Ocean Race veterans, world champions and US SAILING s Rolex Yachtswomen of the Year, in addition to women of all ages with varying levels of racing experience. Every day after racing, HYC will host a casual dockside happy hour where competitors can debrief, rehydrate and relax. Sally Barkow, the 2007 champion, leading the fleet into the weather mark Leading the Race Committee will be Jim Tichenor (Houston), a US SAILING-certified national senior race officer from Houston Yacht Club who will serve as Principal Race Officer. Additional details will be confirmed at the US SAILING Spring Meeting, March 14-16, 2008, and announced soon after. Bids are now being accepted to host the 2011 regatta and interested yacht clubs are encouraged to attend US SAILING s IWKC committee meeting at the US SAILING Spring Meeting. A Preliminary Notice of Race will be posted online in early 2009 at www.ussailing.org/riwkc and at the event website www.riwkc.com. Each evening, Texas inspired parties will take place with the eagerly anticipated Crew Party and the traditional Rolex gala and awards presentation where a Rolex timepiece will be awarded to the winning boat s skipper. Photo courtesy of Dan Nerney/Rolex Terry Schertz battling the third day s tricky weather conditions amid a fleet of competitive sailors Adult and Youth Development Furthering the event s 22-year mission to provide opportunities for improvement to women sailors of all ages, organizers will offer: A series of Road to Rolex skills clinics to be held around the country, supported by a grant from Rolex. On-shore workshops combined with on-the-water drills prepare sailors for the intense competition of one-design sailing. Where there are enough boats to hold short, windward/leeward races, the winner receives a credit toward her Rolex IWKC registration fees. There are two opportunities for youth sailors: 1. Next Step to Rolex Program An intensive two-day introduction to keelboat racing taught by leading sailing coaches that takes place during the Rolex IWKC. 2. Junior Road to Rolex Clinic An optional weekend keelboat clinic offered to participants of the U.S. Junior Women s Doublehanded Championship, held July 7-13, 2008, in Sausalito, Calif. For more information on any of these developmental programs or to subscribe to the Rolex IWKC newsfeed, visit www.ussailing.org/riwkc. Mark Sadler Sails to J/22 World Championship By Tommy Ballantyne Near-perfect sailing conditions prevailed offshore Durban, South Africa on Friday, December 21 for the closing stages of the J/22 World Championship with Mark Sadler of the Royal Cape Yacht Club capping a superb performance over the previous week aboard Orion Express to claim the world title in this Class for the first time. In second place overall was defending J/22 champion Jeroen den Boer of the Netherlands on HBB/ Slam. The Point Yacht Club entry, Eikos, skippered by Ian Ainslie finished third, and Greenlight (RCYC) with Dave Hudson at the helm came in fourth. Sailing in 15-knot light-to-moderate north-easterly winds, Sadler and crew members Paul Wilcox, Gary Sindler and Julia Sfarlea underlined their undeniable superiority in this regatta by winning three of the last four races. This made six wins from 10 starts for the week-long regatta which was curtailed by strong winds resulting in two-and-a-half day s racing out of five being lost. Four yachts dominated the final four races Orion Express, HBB/ Slam, Eikos and Greenlight. The overall winner was virtually a foregone conclusion after the sixth race on Thursday with Orion Express out in front of the leaderboard, nine points ahead of its nearest rival, HBB/ Slam. Ainslie at this stage was a distant 12th in a fleet of 35 yachts. Racing on Friday was always going to be about deciding which of the nearest challengers would fill the placings. The overall results were in doubt right up until the last race of the day, with Den Boer finishing second to Hudson and Ainslie slipping back to fifth leaving Den Boer the runner-up to Sadler. Sadler, who skippered Shosholoza with distinction in the America s Cup regatta earlier this year, put his considerable marine knowledge and racing skills to good use to finish with an event aggregate of 23 points and a net result of 10 points Top 10 (10 races scored with two discards) 1. Orion Express (RSA/ RCYC; Mark Sadler) 10 points 2. HBB/ Slam (NED; Jeroen den Boer) 22 points 3. Eikos (RSA/PYC; Ian Ainslie) 23 points 4. Greenlight (RSA/ RCYC; Dave Hudson) 27 points 5. Macs (RSA/ RCYC; Dominique Provoyeur) 46 points 6. Rampant III (RSA/ Aeolians; Phillip Baum) 62 points 7. Quantum Sails Design Group (RSA/ TYC; David Rae) 65 points 8. Essent Banana-Jama (NED; Kasper Kieft) 67 points 9. Orion Contender (RSA/ PYC; Craig Millar) 74 points 10. Team Gaastra (NED; Eelco Blok) 76 points after two discards. This gave Orion Express the overall title by 12 points from runner-up HBB/ Slam with 22, only one point ahead of third-placed Eikos with 23. Then came Greenlight at 27 points followed by Macs with its all-women crew of Penny Alison, Kim Rew and Claudia Meek skippered by Dominique Provoyeur (RCYC) fifth with 46 and the satisfaction of a first place in the third race. Den Boer did well to retain the runner-up berth, which he held throughout the championship in the face of some stiff opposition from Ainslie who had Greg Davis at helm and Marcello Burricks on bow. Had it not been for Ainslie s poor start on the first day when he suffered a disqualification in the first race, he might well have overhauled the Hollander. But at this level it is all about consistency, and in this department Sadler had no peer. 12 United States J/22
