From the moment I contacted Bowel Cancer UK, right up until the day of my event, the support and enthusiasm given by the team helped me achieve my fundraising target and aim of supporting such an important cause. Regina O Reilly Thank you for supporting us! Bowel Cancer UK aims to save lives and improve the quality of life for all those affected by bowel cancer. Without amazing people like you raising money for Bowel Cancer UK, we wouldn t be able to carry out our important work. Your help will ensure that we can campaign for best treatment and care as well as providing practical support and advice. 02 Bowel Cancer UK - fundraising booklet

fundraising ideas You ll have more success reaching your fundraising target if you break it down. Set yourself a goal, divide it into smaller amounts and plan several fundraisers to achieve each milestone. For inspiration, take a look at our top ten fundraising ideas: Coffee Break Why not host a coffee morning, afternoon tea or cake sale. Supermarket Sweep Apply for permission to hold a bag packing day in your local supermarket. Bring some friends, pick a busy shopping day and get packing. SOLD! Clear out your cupboards, loft and garage. Sell what you find on ebay or at a car boot sale. Come Dine With Me Hold a dinner party and ask people to donate for the privilege of eating your tasty dishes. Community Counts Approach local schools and ask them to have a dress down day, organise a bring and buy sale at your local church or ask shops to fill collection tins for you. Collect Cash Write to your local council, shopping centre or leisure centre to apply for permission and a date to hold a collection. We ll provide you with the t-shirts and collecting tins! Get Sporty Hold a sports day for friends and family in your local park and charge for entry to your mini Olympics. Prefer team games? Hold a football, rounders or golf tournament. Get Sponsored Why not sit in a bath of beans, grow a beard, shave your head, give up chocolate, kick a bad habit or stay silent for a day. Quiz Master Approach your local pub to ask if you can hold a quiz or suggest donating the proceeds of their weekly quiz to Bowel Cancer UK. Party Time From sixties discos to barn dances, everyone loves a good party. Charge for entry and add karaoke or silly games for more fun and fundraising! Bowel Cancer UK - fundraising booklet 03

Your Support will make a difference 25 Pays for one of our specialist nurses to provide free information and support to a patient or carer via the phone and e-mail. This free service helps over 4,000 people a year. 100 Covers the distribution of awareness posters to hundreds of health centres and surgeries. 350 Enables us to print a month s supply of our vital Good Bowel Health booklets, outlining the simple steps people can take to reduce their cancer risk. 500 Will recruit and train an Awareness volunteer who will reach 800 people a year through talks and presentations. 04 Bowel Cancer UK - fundraising booklet

All of these activities help us reach and support 500,000 people per year with vital potentially life-saving information. 1,000 Provides specialist training to health care professionals to ensure best treatment and care. 2,000 Will help us to campaign for better services in order to diagnose bowel cancer early. Hints and tips to successful fundraising Vicky and Fiona climbed Mount Fife in New Zealand Raising 12,000 Fiona and I set ourselves a target of 6,500 we wanted to hold events rather than simply asking for sponsorship. We organised events, sold advertising space on our jackets and put together a recipe book. I believe that anyone can reach their target with a little planning. Holding an event or activity is a great way to fundraise for Bowel Cancer UK, while having fun. Fundraising online Creating an online fundraising page, such as Justgiving is a quick and easy way to collect donations. It can save you hours of asking for support and collecting sponsorship money. People tend to give more when donating online. If you set a target, your page will tell you how your fundraising total has grown and how far off, or over your target you are. www.justgiving.co.uk/bowelcanceruk or www.virginmoneygiving.co.uk 06 Bowel Cancer UK - fundraising booklet

Holding an event to fundraise Perhaps you have decided to hold your own event. Whether you are thinking of a toddlers tea party or a Grand Ball, we are here to help you every step of the way. Find the ideal location Consider the type of space and facilities you need and how many people you expect to take part. Pick a venue that is accessible to all and close to transport links. Don t forget to mention that your event is for charity often you will be able to get the venue for a reduced rate or even free! Set your date Make sure you have organised enough time and which day of the week would work best for you. Budget Calculate your costs. Try local businesses for sponsorship and set your target. Make sure it is considerably higher than your costs and tell everyone! We have materials to help you promote your event. Please contact the events team on 020 7940 1769 or email events@bowelcanceruk.org.uk who will be delighted to hear from you. Bowel Cancer UK - fundraising booklet 07

Getting individuals to sponsor you Think about how to make your individual or group challenge sound exciting and talk about why you want to raise money for Bowel Cancer UK. If you have a personal reason for getting involved, share it, as it will be an incredible motivation for your potential supporters. E-mail your friends and colleagues for support and remember to update them on how your fundraising is going. Ask your employer to help Have you thought of asking your employer to match the amount you raise in sponsorship for your personal challenge? Many companies do this, so find out if your company is one of them it is tax efficient for them and it doubles your income. 08 Bowel Cancer UK - fundraising booklet

Publicise it! You have put loads of effort into your event or challenge but do enough people know about it? Have you made it the topic of conversation around the water cooler at work? Have all your friends cleared their diaries just so they can help you raise money to support people affected by bowel cancer? Get the most out of the internet and use Facebook and/or Twitter or consider writing a Blog. Don t forget to also contact your local radio and TV stations they are always happy to hear about extraordinary fundraising stories. Tell us your story Stories are an invaluable way for us to show the impact of our work, through the media. We would be really grateful to hear about your fundraising activity and why you support Bowel Cancer UK. If you have a story to tell and you don t mind us promoting this to inspire and inform others please e-mail events@bowelcanceruk.org.uk Bowel Cancer UK - fundraising booklet 09
