The University for World-Class Professionals Accounting, Finance and Economics

Welcome to the Department of Accounting, Finance and Economics In the increasingly globalised, technological and competitive economies and societies of the early 21st century, the premium paid to those who can demonstrate a high level of skills can only increase. Graduates of the Department of Accounting, Finance and Economics at Manchester Metropolitan University Business School are amongst the best of those equipped to face these future challenges and reap the rewards. The Department of Accounting, Finance and Economics is one of the largest in the UK, with over 60 members of staff. Our staff provide an excellent breadth of academic and professional experience, offering you outstanding opportunities to understand the subjects and the career options available. In this changing world, simply mastering a fixed curriculum will not prepare you for the unknowns of your career, therefore students are provided with additional opportunities to enhance their employability skills and encourage flexibility, imagination and the ability to think critically. Ultimately, we aim for our graduates to have the confidence and ability to overcome any problem they face not just those problems discussed in the text book. Students and staff work very closely together and students receive excellent support throughout their studies; an example of this is the award-winning AFE Student Society (PQ Award for Student Society of the Year 2014). Through our staffs leadership and advisory roles in professional organisations, we are in an ideal position to deliver first and best information, education and advice. The quality of our provision is confirmed by the fact that the department is closely connected with a range of industry bodies. These include the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA), and the Institute of Financial Planning. We are also working with major clients like PwC and Her Majesty s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) in developing and delivering tailored postgraduate programmes. In short, we deliver programmes for today, designed to equip those who will meet and overcome the challenges of tomorrow. Professor Chris Pyke Associate Dean and Head of Department Professionally accredited Many of our courses are designed to gain approval from the following professional bodies:

Our undergraduate programmes 94% of Accounting and Finance students were satisfied with the overall quality of the course National Student Survey, 2015 Accounting and Finance BA (Hons) Our Accounting and Finance degree assumes no previous knowledge of accounting or finance and combines these subjects with business disciplines. Jack Crombleholme Jack completed his fouryear Accounting and Finance undergraduate degree in 2014, before securing a graduate position with BNY Mellon. I chose to study at Manchester Metropolitan University because its Accounting and Finance course is ranked very highly in the UK. I thought about going to London, but Manchester is young and vibrant and is quickly developing its reputation as the largest and fastest growing financial hub in the region. My course included a one-year placement as an accounts assistant for a financial accountant where I received a good grounding in many aspects of accountancy and finance. I think a placement year is important for students who don t necessarily have a lot of experience in the field they want to go into and I can t stress how important it was for me. The skills I picked up there - even soft skills such as working in teams and meeting deadlines - were useful to draw upon when I was in both the application and interview stages of jobs. The support I ve received from staff at the University has been amazing. The lecturers, especially, were fantastic and were instrumental in my high exam marks. As students, we were able to ask their advice on any aspect of the course or our future careers and their approachability, knowledge and open door policy meant we got a swift answer. I am delighted that I will soon be starting my role as financial analyst senior associate, and feel that without the support of MMU I would not be in this position now. Studying at Manchester Metropolitan University was definitely the right choice. 6 Accounting, Finance and Economics

Aimee Brown Aimee completed a BA Honours degree in Economics before securing a 12 month internship at MMU, where she has been assisting the Business School bid to gain AACSB accreditation. She will soon be starting a finance graduate scheme with Experian, alongside studying for her CIMA qualification. Economics appealed to me, as it relates to all aspects of life, including national and global issues. Furthermore, when I applied to study economics, the UK was in the midst of an economic downturn. This was something I knew little about, but I was interested in learning more about our economy and what had caused not only the UK, but also the USA and Europe to experience one of the worst economic depressions/downturns of recent years. Learning about a completely new and interesting subject was something I really enjoyed. I was slightly apprehensive that I would not like Economics or understand it, but with hard work and determination, as well as immersing myself in extra-curricular activities, I had a great time studying at MMU and I am so glad that I selected Economics as my degree route. Economics is such a broad subject, for instance in my final year I studied a Money and Banking module, as well as Economics of Growth and Development. This variety and the breadth of the subject heightened my interest in economics. Although I am excited for the next chapter in my life, I am sad to be leaving MMU. It set me up with a great set of skills to take with me and I ve had a brilliant time. 12 Accounting, Finance and Economics

I was here three times a week for an hour at each time on a turbo-trainer. It was incredible to have access to this facility and it is a real honour for me to be to have been attached to the university for such a long time. When I was awarded an honorary MSc in 2003, and then Barney and I were both awarded an honorary doctorate in 2009, the bond grew stronger. We have such an affinity - especially as we have the same work ethic - we both believe in excellence. www.business.mmu.ac.uk 15

Combined Honours The Combined Honours Programme provides the flexibility for you to study two subjects at degree level. Combining two subjects at degree level A number of our Economics courses may also be studied as part of our Combined Honours programme, providing the flexibility for you to study two subjects at degree level. The subjects and combinations are drawn from several disciplines and you may choose to study two closely related disciplines or two that are entirely unrelated. Whatever your chosen subject combination, you will be able to demonstrate to future employers your flexibility and breadth of experience and skills. Options available: Economics with Business Economics with International Business Economics with Mathematics Economics with Politics Flexibility Once you have chosen your Combined Honours programme there is further flexibility in the amount of each subject you study. In Year 1 you will study equal amounts of your two subjects. In Year 2 the balance may vary from equal amounts of each subject to a major/minor combination where you focus more on one of your subjects. In Year 3, you may continue to study both subjects on an equal or major/minor basis. If you study both subjects in equal amounts, you will receive a joint award where the name of both of your subjects will appear in your degree title. For example, if you choose to study Sport and Business equally you would obtain a BSc (Hons) Sport and Business degree. Studying The academic year is divided into three terms, starting in September. If you enrol on a full-time route you can expect to devote around 35 hours to study each week. Each year you will study four units of 30 credits each. These will be made up of core units for your chosen course and option units that you can select from an extensive range of titles. Timetabled classes Teaching techniques vary from formal lectures to practical sessions, presentations and group activity, supported by the use of our online Moodle system which will also give you access to your own personalised timetable so you know where you re supposed to be and when. You may find that this is a big shift from 6th Form and A level study: the emphasis at University is on management of your working week, though we are here to help and guide you. Assessment Formal assessment includes examinations, group or individual presentations, written essays and reports, poster presentations and portfolios of work. Not every subject is assessed in the same way, but you will probably meet all these forms of assessment during your degree studies. From the second year onwards, these formal assessment marks go towards determining the final classification of your degree from Manchester Metropolitan University. The work placement year is not formally assessed but must be satisfactorily completed. Placement year A placement year provides you with an excellent opportunity to acquire high quality work experience and structured on-the-job training, whilst earning a salary. Students who take this opportunity may even be offered a job by their placement employers and others gain valuable experience to add to their CVs. The placement must be a minimum of 36 weeks but it will usually last for 12 months and takes place after your second year of study. Awarding-winning placement team We have an award-winning placement team who advertise vacancies and can help you find a placement. The team has over 25 years experience of matching students to employers and they advertise over 1000 vacancies each year. The team organises an annual placement fair where you will have the opportunity to meet employers who are actively recruiting placement students, they deliver CV workshops, provide one-to-one advice, and will conduct a mock interview with you, enabling you to practice your interview technique. Plan for your placement The placement jobs market is competitive and it is your responsibility to be pro-active and apply for vacancies. We recommend that you start researching companies and opportunities during your first year and apply for positions at the start of your second year. Finding the right opportunity and the right position is very important as if you find a good match with your employer then the longer term employment opportunities after graduation could be much greater. 22 Accounting, Finance and Economics
