Most textbook publishers provide learning materials through online learning centers, while a variety of ideas on how to use social networking technologies (e.g., wikis, blogs, Facebook) for language learning are presented at conferences. The underlying assumption of online assignments is that they are inherently motivating for students and thereby provide effective learning opportunities. Yet, as the novelty effect wears off the shortcomings of these assignments become evident. In this talk I will outline how second language acquisition and multimedia learning theories need to inform the design of effective online tasks. Through examples I will show why online tasks need to complement faceto-face instruction. Finally, I will argue that in order to take full advantage of online learning students need to be prepared to effectively collaborate.
