About the Department Telematics Department was established in January 2000 with the aim of training in computer networks and control systems, based on them. At the moment the priority research areas of the department are: - high-performance and quantum computers; - cloud computing; - information protection; - telematics and network-centric system for robot control; - multiprotocol distributed information systems. Features of studying at the Telematics department A distinctive feature of the educational process at the department is: - high level of studying basic disciplines; - a large amount of laboratory and practical works; - interesting term papers and projects; - students participation in space projects; - students participation in software development projects; - students participation in high-tech projects for Ford Motors Company. Students of the department regularly participate at international festivals, conferences and competitions. The best student scientific works are involved in grants of St. Petersburg s government and the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation. "Mathematics and Computer Science" training goal: "Mathematics and Computer Science" training goal is the professional development of students' scientific and engineering skills, based on the use of mathematical modeling of high performance computing, software and networking technologies for processing information. The concept of the training program is to combine fundamental and applied knowledge in competence system, which allows graduates of the department to independently solve complex problems using supercomputer simulation technologies, cloud computing, telematics services, data security, and network-centric management. 3
BSc curriculum Telematics Department includes 57 disciplines, united in three cycles. Humanitarian, social and economic cycle combines disciplines: History, Philosophy, Foreign Language, Economics, Russian language and culture of speech, Cultural Studies, Project Management. Mathematical and natural science cycle combines disciplines: Physics, Computer Science, Numerical Analysis, Functional Programming and others. Professional cycle includes following disciplines: The Architecture of Modern Computers, OS of Supercomputers, Supercomputers Administration, Methods of Networking with Supercomputers, Calculus, Linear Algebra and Analytic Geometry, Mathematical Logic, Computer Geometry and Geometric Modeling, Mathematical Statistics, Methods and Means for Protection of Computer Information, Methods of Text Data Processing, Methods of Software Testing, Methods of Data Management in a Supercomputer, Parallel Programming, Artificial Intelligence Systems, Supercomputer Technologies in Distributed Databases, and others. Successful study of these disciplines allows graduates to find an interesting job in the intellectual areas of science and technology, using mathematical methods and computer technology, as well as methods of mathematical modeling of processes, specializing in the research and development of information security solutions, designing high-performance computers, robots, control systems and space experiments. 4
MSc curriculum includes 20 disciplines, united in two cycles. General scientific cycle includes following disciplines: Philosophy and Methodology of Scientific Knowledge, Computer Technologies in Science and Education, History and Methodology of Mathematics, Methods of Machine Learning, and others. Professional cycle combines disciplines: Administration for Supercomputers, Parallel Computing, Architecture and Organization of Supercomputers, Parallel Algorithms, Data Analysis, Relational Data Structures, Pattern Recognition, Cloud Computing, Information Security, Software Verification Methods, Intelligent Systems and others. The study of these disciplines develop students' skills of independent scientific work and R&D work to stimulate interest in research activities, the ability to engage in constructive thinking and professional activities in the field of computer science. Graduates of the department, who has successfully defended master's thesis, are defined by: - the ability to quickly find, analyze and process science and technology, natural science and general scientific information, interpreting it to an engineering form; - possession of supercomputer methods of predictive mathematical modeling and analysis for large amount of data; - knowledge of simulation methods in the field of science and technology; - ability to apply algorithms and computational methods that underlie modern control methods; 5
- the ability to creatively use, development and improvement of mathematical methods and modern software technologies. Places for practice Bachelor's study in "Mathematics and Computer Science", meets the requirements of the leading Russian industrial companies and research institutes, such as the RSC Energia, Transas, RTC and SPIIRAS, which are the places for work practice for students of the department. Employment Professionals in the field of mathematics and computer science in highly required both in Russia and abroad. 6
The successful study enables graduates to work in the department of public administration, major industrial corporations, companies, software developers, to participate in international projects. The average salary of graduates is 50-60 thousand rubles. Graduates who prefer scientific work can continue their education in the form of postgraduate study. Scientific work Senior students of the department are actively involved in research process carried out for the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation, the Russian Space Agency, the Foundation for Fundamental Research, as well as leading foreign industrial companies such as IBM and Ford Motors Company. The main directions of research practice: - development of methods and means of information protection in computer networks; - development of technologies for cloud and quantum computing; - development of telematics devices and means of network-centric control; - software for robots and cyber-physical systems; - monitoring and control of moving objects; - development of the equipment for scientific experiments on board the International Space Station. Research results are regularly reported at major international conferences, such as the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum (2013), International Conference on Informatics and Semiotics in Organizations, (ICISO 2013, Reykiavik), International Congress ICAS (2014), International conference ITST (2013, Tampere). 7
Information and methodological support On the territory of SPbSPU students have free access to the Internet, information resources and library network of Polytechnical University, including access to Russian and foreign information databases, such as EBSCO, e-library, CSA, SPIE, Springer, Qpat, Code Consultant +, and etc. Laboratories and equipment Teaching and research laboratories of the Telematics department, are combined in a heterogeneous environment of cloud computing using modern wired and wireless communications. Laboratories are equipped with high-performance hardware and licensed software, including software packages for process modeling on supercomputers, data processing using telematics devices and cloud computing resources. Teaching staff The teaching process involves 3 professors, 7 associate professors, Ph.D. and 6 assistants. The average age of lecturers at the Department is about 40 years.
