Page 13.1 1.0 PRINCIPAL TEACHER DUTIES 1. The duties of a Principal Teacher are drawn from the outline duties for Principal Teachers set out in Annex B of the agreement A teaching profession for the 21st century. (a) (b) (c) (d) (e) (f) (g) (h) (i) (j) (k) Responsibility for the leadership, good management and strategic direction of colleagues. Curriculum development and quality assurance. Contributing to the development of school policy in relation to the behaviour management of pupils. The management and guidance of colleagues. Reviewing the CPD needs, career development and performance of colleagues. The provision of advice, support and guidance to colleagues. Responsibility for the leadership, good management and strategic direction of pastoral care within the school. The development of school policy for the behaviour management of pupils. Assisting in the management, deployment and development of pastoral care staff. Implementation of whole school policies dealing with guidance issues pastoral care, assessment and pupil welfare. Working in partnership with colleagues, parents, other specialist agencies and staff in other schools as appropriate. 2.0 KEY RESPONSIBILITY AREAS 1. The following four key responsibility areas for promoted posts established by the Scottish Negotiating Committee for Teachers, apply to all Principal Teacher posts. 2.1.1 Responsibility for the leadership, good management and strategic direction of colleagues. 2.1.2 Responsibility for curriculum development and quality assurance. 2.1.3 Responsibility for whole school policy and implementation. 2.1.4 Responsibility for working with partners. 2. The duties of teachers set out in the national agreement will apply also to Principal Teachers. 3.0 DUTIES ASSOCIATED WITH PRINCIPAL TEACHERS MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES WITHIN ALLOCATED AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY THE POST HOLDER WILL HAVE THE FOLLOWING DUTIES. Principal Teacher - Curriculum Specific duties should be based on the exemplar structures set out below. Principal Teacher - Guidance Specific duties should be as set out below.
Page 13.2 PRINCIPAL TEACHER - CURRICULUM Exemplar 1 Title of Post Principal Teacher of Humanities It will be the responsibility of the post holder to develop and maintain the provision for the Humanities (Geography, History, Modern Studies and Religious Education) within the school. The specific duties associated with this post are as follows. Assist with the selection and recruitment of staff according to agreed recruitment procedures Manage the development and implementation of the curriculum in relation to the Humanities Monitor and evaluate learning and teaching within the Humanities Within the Humanities, develop and manage the implementation of all whole school policies including those dealing with behaviour management of pupils, guidance issues, pastoral care, With reference to the Humanities, work in partnership with colleagues, parents, other specialist agencies and staff in other schools as appropriate. Exemplar 2 Title of Post Principal Teacher of Physical Activities and Sport It will be the responsibility of the post holder to develop and maintain the provision for the Physical Activities and Sport within the school. The specific duties associated with this post are as follows. Have management responsibility for allocated staff Be accountable for allocated budgets and the effective deployment of resources Assist with the selection and recruitment of staff according to agreed recruitment procedures

PRINCIPAL TEACHER - GUIDANCE It will be the responsibility of the post holder to develop and maintain the provision for pastoral care of pupils within the school. The specific duties associated with this post will be as follows. Assist with the selection and recruitment of staff according to agreed recruitment procedures The development and implementation of the PSE curriculum Monitor and evaluate learning and teaching within PSE Contribute to the development and implementation of all whole school policies including those dealing with behaviour management of pupils, guidance issues, pastoral care, assessment and pupil welfare Pastoral care, assessment and welfare for a specified caseload of pupils With reference to Guidance, work in partnership with colleagues, parents, other specialist agencies and staff in other schools as appropriate
