Smart guide to ENCs

Jeppesen is a Boeing company Boeing is the world s largest aerospace company and leading manufacturer of commercial jetliners and defense, space and security systems. Backed by Boeing s expertise and resources, Jeppesen integrates navigational, operational and resource optimization information to deliver innovative solutions to air and sea operators worldwide. Jeppesen s marine division is an integral part of Boeing s Digital Aviation organization, which leverages information and technology to enable better decisions, maximize efficiency and improve environmental performance in customer operations.

Jeppesen aims to simplify the complexity of marine business operations by providing intelligent information solutions and integrated services. This means that you can rely on us for both navigational and operational solutions and to support you in managing the transition to ECDIS and e-navigation. Intelligent choices

Making the complex simple Chart simplicity Marine charts have been the cornerstone of Jeppesen s business for nearly 20 years. They still provide the basis for us to provide mariners and fleet managers around the globe with the necessary tools for safe navigation and efficient operations. Today, we provide the simplest and most flexible options available for delivering critical navigational information, and all our chart services can be integrated with DNV recognized weather forecasts, piracy updates and Temporary and Preliminary NtMs. This not only helps you to comply with mandated regulations, but also allows your vessels to take the safest and most economical route possible. Our commitment to delivering intelligent information in a way that reduces your workload has resulted in an ENC distribution format and licensing models that are simple to use, save time and maximize choice. Ship & shore solutions As a ship owner, operator or charterer, you need to integrate navigational information and operational data in an intelligent way. Our onboard solutions allow mariners to monitor and adjust their voyage to arrive on time, conserve fuel, avoid heavy weather damage and cargo loss, and ensure crew safety. Our onshore solutions allow fleet managers to track ships, monitor arrival times and analyze each voyage to ensure the highest possible levels of safety, efficiency and profitability. Our integrated intelligent information approach gives you complete situational awareness, both onboard and ashore, allowing you to monitor vessel performance parameters, manage your assets more efficiently, and improve your strategic decision making. Simplifying complexity Technological development and legislation are making marine operations safer and more efficient, but also more complex. For example, the ECDIS mandate has resulted in all hydrographic data being available in a common digital format, which brings a world of opportunities along with innumerable questions. At Jeppesen, we are committed to simplifying life for ship owners, fleet managers and mariners. As our customer, you can rely on a Marine Professional Services group of experts and ex-captains to help you meet your business challenges head on and ensure that you get the maximum value from our products and services. At the industry level, we collaborate closely with the IHO, IMO and IALA to promote high-quality data and the adoption of e-navigation best practices and standards that benefit the maritime community. We will continue to embed intelligent integrated information in products and services, so that you can optimize your business and navigate as safely and efficiently as possible.

IMO s definition for the Electronic Navigational Chart ENC ENC means the database, standardized as to content, structure and format, issued for use with ECDIS on the authority of government-authorized Hydrographic Offices. The ENC contains all the chart information useful for safe navigation, and may contain supplementary information in addition. There is no such thing as a non-official ENC. An ENC is per definition official, regardless of the distributor or the distribution format, which could be S-63 or a type-approved SENC. Jeppesen is an authorized distributor of ENCs from Hydrographic Offices, as well as ENC data distributed by Regional ENC Coordinating Centers in Norway and the UK (Primar and IC-ENC). ENCs: the reality Produced and authorized by national hydrographic authorities such as Hydrographic Offices, ENCs are vector charts that conform to IHO specifications. When used in an ECDIS, the data can be reassembled to display either an entire chart image or a user-selected combination of chart data. ENCs are intelligent, in that systems using them can be programmed to warn of impending danger in relation to charted information and the vessel s position and movement. ENCs are vector charts compiled from a database of individual geo-referenced objects from Hydrographic Office archives, including existing paper charts. When used in an ECDIS, the ENC content can be displayed as a seamless pattern in user-selected scales presenting userselected chart items. The chart image generated from ENCs is not simply a reproduction of the corresponding paper chart. Its differing appearance is intended to increase visibility and situational awareness and to allow overlays to work without adversely affecting safety, as well as to fit the limited size and resolution of computer monitors. The ENC is a data file: special ECDIS operational functions continuously retrieve the ENC content to give warning of impending danger in relation to the vessel s position and its movement.

Jeppesen ENC Service Meets all ECDIS requirements Uses compact SENC file format for rapid chart installation and updates Allows customers to choose between several flexible licensing options Type approved and accepted for paperless navigation Updated on a daily basis with Notice To Mariners (NtMs), including T&P messages via Internet or e-mail To leverage the inherent safety, efficiency and cost-saving advantages of ENCs, shipping organizations need simple ways of acquiring, updating and managing them. This is encouraging ship owners to partner with data suppliers who offer ECDIS-compliant turnkey solutions to their navigation needs. Your ENC provider There are a number of pivotal factors you should consider when choosing a supplier of ENC charts and e-navigation services. ENC coverage and ease of installation are paramount, closely followed by flexible licensing and the additional products and services your ENC partner can provide to support its electronic charts. Updating should be user friendly via e-mail or Internet utilizing any communications solution onboard. Licensing should be tailored to your needs with the flexibility to order charts directly from a catalog, dynamically, or on a FlatFee or Pay-As-You- Sail basis. Valuable supplementary data services should include tidal information, piracy and weather forecasting data. A Boeing company, Jeppesen is a world leader in navigational solutions and vessel operation services. We can provide you with global, up-to-date ENC and electronic chart coverage and the most simple, cost effective ways to obtain and use them based on your specific business needs. The Jeppesen ENC Service is tailored to meet the needs of shipping companies, ship managers, officers and operators. Our compact file format makes a complete chart database available on a single DVD for rapid installation and is supplemented by rapid, cost-effective options for online updating.

Intelligent ENC licensing Our flagship ENC licensing service, Jeppesen FlatFee, does away with the complexity of licensing and managing ENCs. FlatFee gives access to global ENCs for voyage planning and navigation, combined with easy chart updating, a single license and a set fee invoiced annually. The simplest ENC solution for any shipping organization, it reduces ENC logistics for both mariners and fleet managers, and allows your operations, chartering, finance and administration departments to predict costs.

You can choose one of our ENC licensing options FlatFee, OpenENC (PAYS), Direct Licensing and Dynamic Licensing or a combination, to get the most costeffective solution for your fleet. To ensure you make the right choice, Jeppesen will help to evaluate your requirements and suggest the most suitable and cost-efficient option for a particular vessel or the entire fleet. Jeppesen FlatFee Invoiced and licensed once a year sail! Predictable All ENCs available at any time for planning and navigation Save workload onboard and at the office saving time and money Easy and efficient No need for additional software An ENC service just as easy as our successful Professional+ concept Can be combined with the Jeppesen Online Chart Updating service Jeppesen OpenENC PAYS (Pay-As-You-Sail) solution that lets you easily plan routes on ECDIS Single license opens all ENC charts covered by PAYS Excellent option for vessels in the spot market or those not travelling fixed routes Can be paired with Dynamic Licensing to maintain ENC coverage in countries not permitting PAYS Can be combined with the Jeppesen Online Chart Updating service Dynamic Licensing User friendly and cost effective Automatic, immediate access to ENC licenses whenever needed Uses subscription zones and credit limits to control costs Cost-effective when charts are only needed for shorter periods/ when combined with normal 12-month licenses No pre-ordering of charts required Online chart updating service Jeppesen Direct Licensing Standard ENC licensing model Easy to get chart licenses and updates Combine it with NauticalCatalog or NauticalManager to quickly generate routes between main ports and associated ENC orders INTELLIGENT CHART MANAGEMENT AND ROUTING Ordering, licensing and updating ENCs can be a time-consuming process. Jeppesen provides two tools for simplifying ENC management and routing. NauticalCatalog Saves fleet managers time by allowing them to order ENCs and other Jeppesen data quickly and easily online. NauticalCatalog gives you a graphical view of chart coverage, guides you through the ordering process, auto-selects charts for any route and calculates the aggregated cost. It also exports and imports routes in 18 ECDIS/ECS formats. NauticalManager onboard Saves mariners time and supports safety at sea by easing the bridge-side burden of ENC management. NauticalManager makes it simple to order ENCs, review the chart portfolio and integrate temporary and preliminary Notices to Mariners. It also supports other marine info layers, including DNV-recognized weather. Using an ECDIS and onboard PC, you can easily plan, generate and document routes, in addition to swiftly creating ECDIS compliance reports used by port state control and class auditors.

Worldwide ENC Coverage Although ENC coverage has now expanded to several thousand trading ports and more than 10,000 charts, full global coverage is not yet achieved. There has been lively debate about how to fill the ENC gaps with non-enc electronic charts, and dual-fuel ECDIS has emerged as an interim solution. There are two main dualfuel solutions. The first uses raster charts, basically scanned versions of HO paper charts with static content. The other, as offered by Jeppesen, uses electronic vector charts with similar functionality to ENCs, such as zooming, anti-grounding and layers. Vessels can still navigate with non-official charts, but only as aids to navigation together with paper charts. Digital vector charts for areas where ENCs do not yet exist are the best solution for full global coverage. SENC distribution is the most cost-effective and timesaving method for transferring chart data to a vessel. Intelligent chart delivery Jeppesen SENC format All Jeppesen chart databases including Professional+, ENC and Jeppesen PRIMAR are distributed in CM 93/3 SENC format, which is supported by almost all ECDIS brands on the market. Type approved by Det Norske Veritas, this exclusive chart format has some crucial advantages over the conventional S-57 format for ENC distribution. ECDIS systems have to convert S-57 data into SENC format before use, which can take hours, or in some cases even days, a process that has to be repeated each time new monthly base CDs are issued. ENC data supplied in SENC format can be loaded straight into the ECDIS, allowing licensing, installation and updating to be carried out in a fraction of the time, and via email and Internet rather than CDs. Reliability is another advantage of the ENC-to-SENC conversion, which otherwise has to happen inside the ECDIS. Jeppesen uses standard industry software in a controlled environment to verify ENCs before delivery to vessels. This avoids unnecessary errors during chart installation on the ECDIS. Jeppesen SENC format Worldwide coverage on one DVD No compilation from S-57 to SENC onboard No verification of complied data needed onboard Comprehensive updating service DNV type approved Install the complete database in just 10 minutes
