Located on two different campuses, one in Glion above the famous resort of Montreux on the shores of Lake Geneva, and one in Bulle in the heart of the Gruyère region famous for its culinary specialties GIHE has the unique advantage of offering to its international student body, an ideal, safe and multi cultural educational environment. II HISTORY 1962 Founding of the Hotel School Institut International de Glion. 1977 Name changed to Centre International de Glion (CIG). 1985 Founding member of the Swiss Hotel Schools Association (ASEH) 1989 Opening of the Glion Management Centre in Bulle (known today as Glion Institute of Higher Education, Bulle Campus). 1993 Signing of the 1 st franchise agreement with the European Centre for Tourism Studies Corfu in Greece. 1995 Change of ownership. Mr Jan Huygen, a Glion Alumni was named Chairman and CEO. 2000 Start of the Master s program and launch of the new Bachelor degree programs. 2001 Accreditation by NEASC (New England Association of Schools and Colleges) USA. 2001 Creation of the Event, Sport and Entertainment program. 2002 Name changed to Glion Institute of Higher Education. 2002 Change of ownership to Laureate Hospitality Education, a division of Laureate Education Inc. Based in Baltimore (USA), Laureate manages 55 universities in 27 countries and includes some 600'000 students. It is the largest network of international universities in the world. 2006 University level of accreditation: GIHE transited from the Commission on Technical & Career Institutions to the Commission of Institutions of Higher Education from the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) in the USA. 2007 GIHE, together with its sister school Les Roches International School of Hotel Management, have been ranked by the hiring managers among the top 3 hospitality management schools in the world for an International career. (TNS, U.K., Global Survey) 2008 Les Roches-Gruyère University of Applied Sciences (LRG-UAS), a sister school of Glion, received recognition from the Swiss Confederation and became the first private Swiss university to offer a hospitality management program. The GIHE campus in Bulle hosts the LRG-UAS Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management with a specialization in International Hospitality Management. 2010 Bill Clinton (42 nd President of the United States) became Honorary Chancellor of Laureate International Universities. 2010 GIHE launches the first online MBA in International Hospitality Management. 2010 Glion again ranked among the top hospitality management schools worldwide In a global survey of 5-star hotel hiring managers, Glion was ranked number 2 among all international hospitality management schools for an international career. They include: 33 classrooms 2 computer labs 7 study rooms Kitchen demonstration class 2 libraries Internet access Self Service restaurants Dining rooms Brasserie style restaurants Bars TV lounges On-site sports facilities (Glion) + access to sports centers ( Bulle) Laundry facilities VII ABOUT STUDENTS AND FACULTY Students nationalities Over 90 nationalities and 45 different speaking languages on the two campuses. It is our policy to keep a good mix and balance between the various nationalities and continents without privileging one over the others. Age range of students From 17 up to 39 years old Faculty There are 100 faculty members including full and part time equivalent lecturers as well as professionals who come to enhance the students program as visiting lecturers. Faculty members all have academic credentials and often extensive professional experience relevant to their teaching. Additionally they are encouraged to be members of professional associations and required to update their professional knowledge and participate in scholarly research. Student to lecturer ratio The student to lecturer ratio varies depending on the program and method of instruction. The overall ratio is around 19 students to 1 faculty member not taking into account the external consultants and visiting professionals who enhance courses. This figure is based on students on campus and excludes those doing their compulsory internship because specially appointed personnel monitor these students. GIHE Factsheet June 2011 6
