Presidents Column by Jules Dantin, Ph.D. realized what had meaning to him...close, loving relationships. And those, he had in spades in his daily life. In our busy worlds of scheduling weeks, months and years in advance for work and play, we sometimes forget to live today, breathing this breath. For me, this is a lesson I need to be taught over and over. I forget and worry about things that I can't change. Yet if we don't plan, we may not move forward to meet our goals or see the people that we hold dear. We need both to be present and to plan. Seems like every time life offers a conundrum, the answer has to do with balance...the golden mean. We, your RPA executive committee, hope you will plan to come to your next two RPA events: Wednesday, November 4th is our next CE/dinner on Mindfulness Based Cognitive Behavioral Therapy with Patrick Thornton, Ph.D. and Friday, December 4th is our annual holiday party at Denise Wagner's house in Rohnert Park. Meanwhile, may you be present in your moments. Today, at a rural community health center where I work part-time, I met with a man who was depressed because he was dying of cancer and didn't know how to make sense of his life. What bugged him most was not the pain he had (or anticipated having) or dying. It was losing his future. He could no longer plan for next year and that made it difficult for him to be present today. Today didn't count if he didn't have tomorrow. As he put his feelings into words he Jules Dantin 2

Box 15209, Santa Rosa, CA 95402 The program will introduce the fundamental philosophy and psychology that serves as the base of Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy, and how it differs from CBT. In the process we will look at the primary function of the brain, and the neurology of how information is received and processed, and how emotional processes, intentionality, creativity, problemsolving, and even decision-making processes arise before conscious awareness. We will look at the dynamics of how our representation of the "real" world and our belief structure can impede healthy change, and even how clients we've worked with for one, two, three or more years may have very clear insight regarding the root cause of their difficulties, yet the behavior does not change. And, we will look at the role MBCT serves in all of these areas of inquiry to bring about meaningful and lasting change. This program is suitable for beginning and experienced clinicians and for those providing individual as well as group therapy." The California Psychological Association is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists.
