Our Projects 1. Former Railway Yard and Landfill, Northampton Hydrock was appointed by the Homes and Communities Agency to design and deliver remediation works at the Ransome Road part of the Northampton Brownfield Initiative, for a proposed development of up to 800 new homes. Remediation works covered a 10 hectare area, comprising a former railway siding, transport yard, plant compound and former landfill, and focused on mitigating the risks to controlled waters through the excavation and onsite biological treatment of hydrocarbon impacted soils. A further phase of works will involve providing a clean cover system on the landfill site. Through supplementary investigation and risk assessment, Hydrock was able to negotiate with the regulators a revised remediation strategy which was delivered as Principal Contractor to ensure substantial cost savings for the client against previous schemes. 2. Former BP Transit Site, Swansea, Wales Hydrock was appointed as Principal Contractor by St Modwen to remediate the 69 acre former BP Oil Storage and Distribution facility prior to the development of the Science and Innovation Campus for Swansea University in Swansea Bay. Several remediation technologies were employed to treat the various areas of gross hydrocarbon contamination. Soil was excavated and bioremediated to site-specific target values. Free product was recovered from the groundwater with skimmer pumps and the abstracted groundwater was treated via a groundwater treatment plant, designed, built and operated by Hydrock. Chemical oxidation was undertaken in areas of this sensitive site. Through the deployment of innovative remediation techniques at a challenging site, with tight time constraints, for a lump sum all risk price, all treated soils and groundwater were suitable for reuse on site and the soil disposal volumes were reduced to virtually zero. 3. Proposed Hinkley Point C Nuclear Power Station, Somerset EDF Energy appointed Hydrock for the excavation, screening and physical treatment / disposal of asbestos impacted soils at the site of the proposed Hinkley Point C Nuclear Power Station. The works have involved the remediation of substantial volumes of soils which was completed under HSE License and an EA approved Materials Management Plan. Asbestos remediation was delivered within the tightly controlled safety environments for these materials and Nuclear Safety Systems requirements. Hydrock worked with specialist support from licensed contractors to a tight programme minimising impact to ongoing operations. Removal of soils off-site was minimised through material re-use on site. 4. Residential Gardens (Former Gasworks), South Oxfordshire Hydrock was appointed as Principal Contractor to undertake the remediation of nine individual domestic gardens, across two sites, as part of the Part 2a Contaminated Land Capital Projects remediation programme for South Oxfordshire District Council. Both sites were former coal gas production sites which had been redeveloped into residential properties in the 1970s and 1980s. The remediation works undertaken by Hydrock were for the removal of shallow contamination and restoration of the gardens, with the properties remaining occupied throughout the works. Hydrock site engineers worked closely with the local authority and residents during the two month contract to reduce disruption to a minimum. Our Projects 5. Former Gasworks, Milford Haven and Pembroke Dock, Wales Hydrock has provided environmental guidance and specialist remediation contracting services for the former Milford Haven and Pembroke Dock Gasworks sites. Hydrock formulated a Design & Build solution which comprised the operation of a water treatment system, source removal of free hydrocarbon products and tars, discharge of treated groundwater under license to foul sewer and treatment of grossly contaminated soils at an off-site soil treatment facility. Delivery of this approach ensured that Wales & West Utilities were able to undertake works to remove statutory liabilities within a tight programme. 6. Former Gasworks and Industrial Works, Fenny Stratford Bellway Homes appointed Hydrock as Remediation Contractor for the reclamation and remediation works at the former Town Gas Works at Fenny Stratford, Milton Keynes. The site s industrial history included a gas works, printing facility and paint pigment manufacture, which led to significant gross contamination of the soils and groundwater. Through an innovative and sustainable approach, combining a number of remedial techniques including stabilisation/solidification, Hydrock was able to deliver substantial cost savings of over 40% for the client against previous estimates. 7. Former Cement Works, Rochester Hydrock was appointed by CEMEX for the demolition and remediation of a former cement works for a proposed mixed-used development. The 75ha site comprised a 13ha works area, a quarry (Grey Pit), a logistics yard and berth, and a former Cement Kiln Dust landfill. Hydrock designed and implemented a remediation scheme that included tank removal, demolition, asbestos removal, soil treatment (bioremediation and stabilisation/solidification) and groundwater treatment (free product recovery). Hydrock took an approach to the segregation of materials that, combined with the Materials Management Plan, meant that reuse and recycling was maximised and only asbestos materials were sent to landfill. The project was made viable by developing a thorough commercial understanding of the project asset opportunities and risks which enabled Hydrock to develop a zero cost-to-client solution. This approach is traditional in the demolition industry but innovative in funding wide-scale remediation. 8. Groundwater Treatment and Landfill Remediation, Helpston Two landfill sites at Helpston, near Peterborough, were used for the disposal of the agricultural pesticide mecoprop which led to widespread groundwater contamination. Helpston is the first orphan site of its kind with responsibility for remediation resting with the Environment Agency (EA). Hydrock was appointed by the EA in 2008 to continue the remediation works at the site through providing both specialist consulting and contracting expertise to the project. Over the past four years Hydrock has made significant improvement to the groundwater abstraction system and on site treatment plant to achieve hydraulic containment of the major pollution pathways. Hydrock has also undertaken a variety of remediation trials to assess the feasibility of accelerating source removal. This has led to the installation of a pilot aeration system at one of the former landfill sites to stimulate the biodegradation of mecoprop remaining within the waste mass. Initial results are very positive with significant reductions in mecoprop concentrations being recorded.
