Overview Timeline Cloud is a backup software that creates continuous real time backups of your system and data to provide your company with a scalable, reliable and secure backup solution. Storage servers such as Amazon s3, Google Storage, Nirvanix and Microsoft Azure are connected to simple and easy to use software that performs your backups for you. With a central management console you can deploy the backup client to five machines or a thousand machines in less than five minutes. We are introducing a solution to solve all backup needs for any business. No installation needed, no network setup, no professional IT staff, and 100% on the cloud. Timeline Cloud Features and Technology Service Based: A completely cloud based system; the key to cloud computing is that the computing is on the cloud. The processing, and the related data, is not in a specified known or static location. It is duplicated among cloud storage locations in more than one geographical location ensuring that your data is safe and always available for restore. This is in contrast to a model in which the processing takes place in one or more specific servers that are in a known physical location which is the case for most online backups or ISP storage servers. Flexible Cloud Storage Provider (Amazon S3, Nirvanix, Google Storage, etc...) Currently connected to Amazon s s3 storage server, Timeline Cloud can easily be configured to any of the cloud storage giants. Genie9 can quickly and easily make a few changes to the back end of the central management console and backups will be sent to the destination chosen. This feature is particularly important with today s ever changing and expanding cloud technologies. Scalable and Elastic Scalability was one of the major features kept in mind when designing and creating Timeline Cloud. The system can be stretched to its physical limits whenever computers are added to the system; its interface makes it easy to handle an organizations structure no matter the size. Optimized Resource Management and Utilization With the client s multiple performance modes and the back end s strong structure, Timeline Cloud Platform is a resource friendly platform that does not put a lot of strain on your network resources. Since backups are done on a different network layer, your companies communications and normal interactions with the network, whether it be conference calls, video calls, data transfer or simple email transfer will not be affected and Timeline will go unnoticed.
Cloud Management console Managing a company s backups can prove a difficult task without the proper software and techniques and will eventually become a big problem to your company and technical department. The Cloud Management console is a back end, web based (do software installation) console that can run by an administrator to achieve the following: Activate, delete and authorize computers connected to the system Configure backup policies that govern specific backup rules to specific groups of computers Provide a variety of backup preferences and advanced settings Different kinds of reports and reporting charts that can be exported and can provide periodical or on demand information about your company s backup status. Cloud Database Timeline is a simple backup program with an easy to use interface, however under the hood it is a complex set of instructions and programming that is built to be robust and intelligent. During backups, Timeline creates Databases on the cloud that serve as a quick and fast way to store information about your backup, information about deduplication and deduplicated files as well as to log all the timed events on your system that are displayed on the Timeline for restoring. The Cloud database also provides you with the ability to view your files and access them from anywhere, including from your mobile device. True Global Deduplication Global level deduplication is used to eliminate any duplication of files on the cloud; which means that uploading will not be done to any files that were already uploaded throughout the world. Timeline automatically checks for duplicates in its database. Domain/Company Encrypted Data Deduplication Deduplication of your data, as well as key encrypted data, on your company s domain is performed to ensure that only one instance of a shared documents that is distributed among your company is backed up from each machine. For example; if the company s retreat video file got sent to all 100 employees via email and saved on each computer, Timeline will only have one backed up copy of that file and the rest of the machines will pointed to that backup. Machine Level Data Deduplication The first level of deduplication done by Timeline; this process is done within a user s machine by filtering through all the files and folders saved on the computer and uploading only a single copy of each file so there are no duplicates. However, browsing through the Timeline explorer the user will see his computer as is and will notice the file in all of its locations regardless if deduplication was used or not.
Remote Block Level (Supports Compression and Encryption) Block level technology is a file backup technology created in our labs to solve the ongoing problem of backing up large files. This Technology is ideal for large files that undergo slight changes like databases, Outlook email files (PST) and so on. In this type of backup, only changes within the file will be backed up and not the entire file, saving more space and time. This is done by the block level engine that breaks up the file into small blocks, if Timeline detects a change in this large file it will only backup the small particular block. The engine makes use of the power of the CPU creating as many blocks as the number of cores in the CPU so that this process is done in super speed. Cloud Disaster Recovery The most critical of Timeline s functionality is the Disaster Recovery process, Timeline creates a backup of a machine s entire boot drive, this is a file-by-file backup of each file, including system files, on that drive as well as the MBR signature and the boot partition. This is particularly important in restoring your system to different hardware in case of failure. The Disaster Recovery includes the most important files and folders on the boot drive which are: The Windows folder The Program Files folder The Users folder System state files such as the registry Due to the nature of these files being open files, Timeline uses Windows VSS (Volume Shadow Copy service) to back them up. VSS works by creating snapshots of these files while they are still open, without the need to reset your system or run in a different mode. Creating a backup of such a large number of files such as the Windows system files on each machine in the company will very quickly use up a large amount of storage, which is why deduplication is beneficial. Deduplication on the Disaster Recovery process is done more intelligently and efficiently to ensure that a working Disaster Recovery of each computer is available for restore. There is no need to backup thousands of system files from each computer, saving a lot of time and space. Remote Deployment (Manual, Email, Active Directoy) Done through the central management console, companies with already defined and configured Active Directory need not go through the hassle of deployment; the platform will automatically detect the settings and with a click of a button silently deploy the client to all machines saving your network administrator a very considerable amount of time. Companies that do not have Active Directory settings configured or prefer an alternative way of deployment can simply choose the email option. The console will generate the pre-configured client and provide a download link, this link can then be distributed via email to the employees who then only need to click the link; the client will silently install.
The final deployment option that can be used is manual deployment. The admin has the option to manually distribute the pre-configured.exe setup file to the desired computers. Remote Disaster Recovery Repair Timeline is intelligent enough to scan through corrupted files almost instantly to determine which files need to be replaces in order to return your computer to a previously working state. There is no need to download an entire Disaster Recovery backup, which includes thousands of files, from the cloud to repair your system. This is done by scanning the system and checking through the files to determine which ones have been modified and then replacing those with previous versions. This will quickly return the computer to a working state without risking the loss of your computer s data or without having to sit through a tedious Windows re-installation. Support Upload/Download Resume Our software s backup process is tested against all kinds of interruptions. The database is robust and built to last in case of any interruption, or corruption of entries due to that interruption. The client on each machine will show the connection status if selected to do so by the administrator, if disconnected Timeline will show warnings to reconnect and as soon as the connection returns the backup continues normally. The Management Console also provides information about each and every computer and their connection status. Enterprise Level Reporting Professional reports and graph charts are provided. These reports show data, on an enterprise level, about each and every computer s backups. These reports include information about Timeline s performance, geographical locations of activated computers around the world and upload/download bandwidth usage. Machine Level Reporting Specific to each and every machine, these reports give the users of each machine reports breaking down what is being backed up. It tells about the different backup types and their sizes, making it easier for each user to track his backup status. iphone/ipad, Android, Windows 7 Phone: View, Monitor and Access Utility Timeline has a utility that can be used to monitor the backup job of the particular associated computer through your mobile device. It can also be used to view and access files that have been backed up straight from the cloud.
Security One of the most important of all the features, Timeline cloud has a set of security standards and mechanisms integrated within the client and for the communication between the client and the cloud that secures your data in every way possible against all kinds of attacks. Timeline secures your data in two ways: Data Encryption Using AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) Military grade encryption done on your data by the Timeline client installed on each computer. Upon setting up your backup schema the administrator of the Management Console chooses to give the user of a machine the option to set a personal encryption password. If not set then Timeline will create a password that is only known to the client. The password will never be stored on the server nor will Genie9 have access it. Upon restoring, a check is made using a client s username, timestamp and encryption password to verify that the user is in fact allowed access to the data. Authentication Over SSL (Secure Socket Layer) A cryptographic protocol that provides communication security over the Internet is used to secure the connection between the client and the cloud and to unsure that data is securely transferred to the cloud. For the Management Console; the admin can login by using a username and password to the portal and it will identify this username as an admin username and will verify the password. As for the client; the login is done by entering the email of the registered client and a password. The system will identify the login as a client login and direct the user to the client interface of the console. Extremely Fast Upload Speed Uploading is done through a file grouping policy that groups small files together when uploading to cut down on the time of upload. For example, if a small file takes 1 second to communicate and upload to the cloud, then if there are 500 similar files to upload this will take around 500 seconds to upload. However; Timeline groups these small files into one batch and uploads it as a single item which will only need 1 second to communicate and upload. Client Agent Technologies: The Timeline client is similar to the backup client used by thousands of users today that rely on it to backup their daily data. It is designed as a time machine for Windows that performs real time and continuous data protection. It can backup a wide variety of data types, such as System Files, emails, documents, music, pictures and practically anything else on your machine. It seamlessly backs up your data in the background, working as a parallel universe with computing history. Deleted & backed up files can be retrieved easily by a click of a button. All options and features are pre-configured by the management console through policies.
Simple and Easy No user intervention is needed from the client side. Pre-configured policies are assigned to the client through the Management console. The user will not notice any impact on the system as well. Intelli Continuous Data Protection (CDP) Data is continuously backed up depending on the file type. Genie Timeline intelligently backs up files that require different and more frequent backup times such as Documents more frequently than other files that might not change much during a working day. The administrator can also setup the backup policy so that backups are done in timed intervals instead of IntelliCDP. They can also give the client the ability to set the time interval between each backup. Mobility New Creates a link between your mobile device and your computer. Genie Timeline creates automatic, continuous backups of all synced files between your iphone/ipad/ipod or BlackBerry device and your computer. Genie Timeline constantly checks for changes or additions on these files and backs them up automatically, giving you mobile data security. Timeline Monitor Application The agent provides the user with a generated key based on the user s email. This key should be entered on the Timeline Monitor application page to monitor your backed up files and access any files you might need from the cloud. The Timeline Monitor application is available for smart phone users using Apple s iphone/ipad/itouch, any Android phone or Windows 7 phone. Restore Go back in time with Genie Timeline and recover old files, whether through the Timeline explorer or the search feature. Genie Timeline saves past versions of all your files which you can revert back to easily. The client is able to restore if this option is given to them by the administrator of the Management Console. Multiple Performance Modes Genie Timeline runs on different modes depending on CPU usage. You can choose to run in Smart mode which slows down or speeds up according to CPU usage or Turbo mode which runs at fastest speed. Power Saving mode slows down Timeline when on the go and Game/Movie mode pauses backup while playing a game or watching a movie. Data Types Timeline can backup a wide variety of data types such as E-mails, Documents, Desktop, Office files, ebooks, Bookmarks, Pictures, Videos & Music as well as your iphone/ipad/ipod and BlackBerry Smartphone. Moreover, if the data type is not included in the smart selections page you can always use the filters and add any extension you desire using the Management Console.
Backup Breakdown Capacity and distribution of data types are displayed in informative charts. You can easily get a clear picture and understand details of what is being backed up by taking one look at the backup breakdown chart. The Backup breakdown can also be monitored using the Timeline Monitor application on the user s smart phones. More detailed information and reports about the backup can be found by logging into the Management Console. No Backup Zone A convenient folder located on your desktop. This zone is a place for users to save files and folders that they do not want to backup. For example; your computer contains a large video file that does not need to be included in the backup, to save time this can be done easily by dropping that file into the No-Backup zone. Specific file/folder exclusions can also be done using the Management console by adding or removing file extensions. Native Backups Also referred to as native form backups; you have the ability to access any version of backed up files without the need of Genie Timeline software. You can view and access your data from the cloud itself or from the Timeline Monitor mobile application. The administrator can also determine to have access to all of the files on the cloud, shown in their native form (file name and location). Email Notifications A well known and convenient form of receiving information about your backup, including notifications, errors, and warnings about your backup directly to your inbox is through email notifications. This administrator can give the user the ability to use this feature through the Management Console. Merges With Windows You can add/exclude files, or view deleted files and all versions with a simple right click, if enabled in the policy assigned by the administrator through the Management Console. Timeline also integrates a slider into the familiar folder view, where you can easily roll back your data to any point in time.
Backup File Purging Timeline will purge/consolidate older backups to save space. Older Backups are displayed with fewer ticks on the Timeline, so the Timeline will always show the most recent backups. When the drive's free space is low, Genie Timeline automatically deletes old versions of backed up files to free space. However, if Genie Timeline is unable to find old versions to delete, the backup will stop when there is 500MB of free space left and the Management Console will alert the administrator so that actions can be taken. Triggers of Purging: Timeline will purge/consolidate older versions of your files for different reasons: You are running low on space: If Timeline finds that there is not enough space to continue the backup, all versions, except the original and the latest that were created up to where the backup stopped, will be deleted to make room for newer versions of files. Daily purge: Older backups will be collected into fewer ticks on the Timeline, these ticks represent versions of files created at a specific time. Timeline will delete specific files that represent the ticks that have been collected throughout the day. Purge by Time: On specific time intervals Timeline will perform a check on all files and delete old versions kept. Platform Support Timeline cloud supports the following platforms: Supports both 32-bit and 64-bit platforms Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 Windows 2003, Windows 2008, Windows 2008 R2 Windows SBS 2008 Windows SBS 2011* *As Windows SBS 2011 uses the same Windows 2008 r2 core
