North Shore Private Hospital Hospital Description North Shore Private Hospital (NSPH) is a 272 bed private hospital situated on Sydney's lower north shore and is owned by Ramsay Health Care Limited. Paul Ramsay founded the company in 1964 that has since grown to become one of the largest and most reputable providers of private hospital services throughout Australia. Ramsay Health Care's philosophy recognises that staff are an integral part of the organisation and, as such, seeks to provide staff with benefits, recognition and ongoing communication. NSPH operates through decentralised management, maintains excellent relationships with doctors and staff and offers the latest in medical technology combined with first-class standards of accommodation to ensure the provision of the very best health care available. Program Commencement Dates NSPH offers one graduate nurse intake per year in February. We offer positions for the Acute Nursing Program and positions for the Direct Entry Peri-operative Program Programs offered Acute Nursing Graduate Nurse Program - The acute nursing graduate nurse program consists of two rotations in the ward and specialty areas at NSPH. Peri Operative Graduate Nurse Program - The peri operative graduate nurse program is a direct entry into Operating Theatres and offers one twelve month placement

What kind of rotations do we offer? Rotations offered at NSP Cardiac surgery Plastics Vascular Neurosurgery Orthopaedics General Surgery Short Stay Unit Endoscopy Intensive Care second rotation only Orientation Program General medicine Urology Endocrine Theatre: Scout/Scrub Anaesthetics Recovery There is a three day orientation program at the commencement of the course: These days consist of: NSPH Hospital orientation, a Gradplus study day and a NSPH study day. Supernumerary Time Acute Care Graduate Nurse Program: The graduate nurse will have a number of supernumerary days for each rotation on the general wards. Peri Operative Graduate Nurse Program: The graduate nurse will be provided with supernumerary time during the graduate year. Two weeks in recovery and/or anaesthetics; and up to six weeks in Scrub/ Scout. Full time or Part time Status for the Graduate Nurse Acute Care Graduate Nurse Program: Part time is available to the graduate nurse with a minimum of 32 hours per week (4 days per week), Peri Operative Graduate Nurse Program: Does not offer part time. Graduate Rotation: clinical areas offered for placements Level 1: Cardiothoracic Ward Level 1 Cardiothoracic Ward is a 25 bed ward that incorporates 5 acute care beds specialising in the care of patients both prior to and following cardiothoracic surgery. This ward also cares for patients undergoing diagnostic angiography, EPS & ablation, percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasties, implantable defibrillators and the insertion of permanent pacing systems.

Level 1: Intensive Care Unit The 19 bed Intensive care unit is a level two licensed facility that provides the widest range of care, monitoring and intervention that is relative to the case mix of the hospital and is capable of providing complex, multi-system life support for an indefinite period. The unit comprises of 12 ventilated beds offering full haemodynamic support, heamodyalisis and ventricular support devices. The unit has support of a full time nurse educator and intensive care medical director. Specialities include cardiothoracic surgery and neurosurgery. Level 1: Operating Rooms North Shore Private Hospital s operating theatre suite comprises 15 theatres supported by a 25 bed recovery room. Specialities include: Cardiac Neurosurgery Orthopaedics General surgery Gynaecology Urology Level 1: Short Stay Unit Plastics Vascular surgery Obstetrics Ear/Nose/Throat Paediatrics Neurovascular The 23 bed Day Surgery Unit specialises in surgery for those patients who do not require an overnight stay. This is a fast paced unit specialising in a variety of surgical procedures such as: Small Orthopaedic procedures - hand and foot surgery Gynaecological procedures Urological procedures Smaller general surgical procedures Cardiac procedures The unit provides rooms and a postoperative lounge designed for patient comfort and is equipped with televisions. Endoscopy Unit There are 2 Endoscopy procedure rooms with state of the art equipment and 7 recovery beds. Level 2N Level 2 North has 29 beds and specialises in surgical cases including: Gynaecology ENT, Endocrine

Plastics General Surgery Cardiovascular Vascular Level 3N: Neurosurgery Level 3N is a 31 bed ward that specialises in the areas of: Neurosurgery Neurology Levels 3 & 4: Orthopaedic Wards Levels 3 & 4 contain 30 beds each and specialise in the care of patients undergoing orthopaedic procedures including: Hand surgery Major Joint replacements Spinal surgery Shoulder surgery Elbow surgery Knee surgery Foot surgery Sports injuries Trauma Level 4N Level 4N is a medical oncology ward. There are 28 beds. This ward caters for patients having inpatient chemotherapy, medical oncology and palliative care. The staff are supported by the Oncology CNC. Level 5: General Surgical Ward A number of specialities are provided in the 30 bed Level 5 general surgical ward. These include: Colorectal surgery General surgery Gynaecological surgery Upper GI surgery Urological surgery Chemotherapy/Oncology Graduate Nurse Support at NSPH There are a variety of support networks available to the Graduate Nurse. These are in the form of the: NSW Grad Plus Coordinator Preceptors NSPH Graduate Nurse Coordinator Your Peers (other graduates) Nurse Unit Managers Nursing Administration. Nurse Educators Graduate Nurse Meetings are held monthly. These allow Graduate Nurses to debrief and discuss experiences

with their peers and the Graduate Nurse Coordinator. These meetings provide the opportunity for Graduate Nurses to address questions and concerns in a positive and supportive environment, outside the clinical arena. Education at NSPH NSPH is committed to the professional development of its staff through the provision of ward based inservice, a hospital wide education program, post-graduate scholarships and study leave. Post Graduate Diploma of Midwifery Two intakes a year in February and July A 12-month, full-time course There are 2 residential schools at Wagga Wagga campus Students work 32 hours per week at NSPH and rotate within the Maternity Unit Students spend a minimum of 16 weeks in the Delivery Suite, 18 weeks in the Maternity Ward and 7 weeks in the Special Care Nursery Students are supported by a part-time Midwifery Educator During the course, the students complete the clinical requirements of the Nurses & Midwives Board (NMB), including conducting 25 normal births under the supervision of a registered midwife and obstetrician Students follow 10 women through their pregnancies until birth Essential Criteria: Employment at NSPH Maternity Unit Acceptance at Charles Sturt University NSW nurses registration with 1 year post registration experience Certificate in Neonatal Special Care This course is run in conjunction with NSW College of Nursing 6 month course Financial Assistance for Further Education Financial assistance may also be available for other further education and development. Part -funded scholarships for the Graduate Certificate in Critical Care, Perioperative, Anaesthetic and Recovery Room nursing and Midwifery are offered in conjunction with the University of Technology Sydney and Northern Sydney Central Coast Health and Charles Sturt University.
