2 Postgraduate Nursing at St Vincent s Hospital Melbourne (SVHM) St Vincent s is committed to facilitating the professional development of our nursing staff. SVHM is well versed in delivering postgraduate education and has established sound partnerships with numerous tertiary institutions As a postgraduate student you will be mentored by highly skilled clinical educators and encouraged to develop a comprehensive theoretical knowledge base within a supportive and friendly learning environment. St Vincent s prides itself in providing the best evidence based care and we are passionate about equipping our nurses with the skills and attributes to facilitate best practice. Entry Requirements for Postgraduate Study Applicants must be a Registered Nurse with an appropriate nursing degree and registered with Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA). St Vincent s recommends prospective students have a minimum of 2 years nursing experience before committing to postgraduate studies with at least 1 year experience in the specialty area of interest. A minimum of 4 students in any area is required for the specialty to be offered, however, St Vincent s will endeavor to facilitate any Registered Nurse wishing to undertake Postgraduate studies by enabling them to attend lectures off campus at alternative facilities while maintaining their employment and clinical supervision at St Vincent s where possible. Nursing Education Centre Whilst undertaking postgraduate study the Nursing Education Centre will: Provide a supportive learning environment Provide specialty area clinical nurse educators to maximise clinical learning and support Provide varied learning opportunities Provide regular constructive feedback on clinical performance Maintain confidentiality within the education team Provide support and guidance as required 1
3 Student Expectations As a post graduate student it is an expectation that all students will: Act in a professional manner Function as an independent self-directed adult learner Be approachable and receptive to feedback on clinical practice Maintain the professional standards of a registered nurse Practices in accordance to the values of St Vincent s Maintains patient confidentiality Maintains open communication channels with the Nursing Education Centre and clinical nurse educators Ensures timely completion of assessments Ensures that clinical educators time is used appropriately Fees 2016 ACU Clinical subjects run by SVHM External Staff ($950 per subject 2 subjects) SVHM will invoice course participants at the beginning of each semester. For prices on ACU foundational online subjects (2 subjects) refer to the following link: ral_information/fees Fee-help Fee-help is a government assistance loan scheme that assists eligible fee paying student s pay all or part of their tuition fees. It cannot be used for additional study costs such as accommodation or text books. Refer to the following website for further information. 4 Employment Students undertaking postgraduate studies at SVHM need to be currently employed in the specialty area they will be studying in. It is a requirement that postgraduate students work 4 days per week (0.8 EFT). Some courses can accommodate a reduced EFT; this would need to be discussed with the postgraduate coordinator prior to commencement of studies. Annual leave It is your responsibility to ensure that; Annual leave does not prevent completion of any course assessment or attendance at study days. All annual leave is not permitted during the academic year. It is recommended that annual leave been taken outside of the academic year and during the mid-semester break. Withdrawal or Deferment Students who decide to withdraw or defer from the Graduate Certificate programs will be required to complete a withdrawal or deferment E-Form and send it to Postgraduate Nursing Coordinator. If the formal application is received prior to March 31 st (semester 1) or 31 st August (semester 2) the student will not be liable to pay subject fees. Deferral after these dates will incur the fee. Withdrawal or deferment E-Forms can be found at: ms.aspx Student attendance Attendance is compulsory at all scheduled study days and study sessions. An attendance record will be kept. Students who are unable to attend must communicate this to the relevant clinical educators and their NUM as soon as possible. If there are extreme circumstances that a study day will be missed the educators and student will ensure the relevant lectures will be reviewed by the student. A medical certificate or statuary declaration is required for any missed attendance. Students are expected to behave in an appropriate and professional manner, including being punctual to study days 3
5 Conduct Students are expected to behave in an appropriate and professional manner, this includes: Being punctual to study days Being respectful to all guest speakers No mobile phone use during study days Adhering to the hospital social media policy Student Support Academic Students are urged to seek assistance as early as possible if they are experiencing problems in relation to academic requirements. Students are encouraged to seek assistance and resources from the Nursing Education Centre or from the relevant tertiary institution. Communication Information regarding the Graduate Certificate Programs will be communicated electronically via , please ensure that your stream facilitator has the correct address for correspondence. It is an expectation that students check their at least twice a week. 4
6 Submission of Assignments (ACU students) A hard copy of any written assessments must be submitted to your stream educator or to the Nursing Education Centre, second floor Aikenhead building (building E), by 1600hrs on the due date. A completed SVHM Assignment Cover Sheet, with signed declaration of originality, is required for all written assessment tasks. Assignments without a signed declaration will not be accepted for marking. E-copy of the assignment cover sheet can be found at; rms.aspx It is also a requirement that an electronic or soft copy of all written assignments be ed to [email protected]. Please list the speciality stream and relevant educator on the subject heading. The soft copy must be in a word document in a PDF format. Assessment tasks will be available for collection when announced via or as specified by the stream educator. Most assessment tasks (e.g. Clinical Competencies) will be retained as per postgraduate studies procedure (students can request a photocopy). Referencing of Work Please refer to your tertiary institution for the correct style of referencing. Correct referencing is important and cannot be stressed enough. If you are unsure about how to reference correctly please refer to the academic skills unit of your relevant. Academic Honesty Students are required to submit their own work. Any concerns regarding academic honesty will be formally addressed. Extensions Requests for extension of the due date of an assessment task may ONLY be made in writing at least three days before the due date. Application for extension must be submitted via to the postgraduate coordinator. Confirmation of receipt of the letter or will be returned to the student and if the extension is approved the student is required to attach a copy of the approved letter or to the assessment task prior to submission. 7 Late Submissions In cases where a formal extension has NOT been granted, the following penalties will apply: For assessment tasks completed after the specified time on the due or extended date a penalty of 5% of the maximum marks available will be incurred for each day late. Special Consideration (ACU students) The following list provides some examples of circumstances which may constitute grounds for Special Consideration based on a serious illness and/or exceptional and unforeseen situation that hampers a student s ability to prepare for, or complete an assessment task. However, relevant circumstances are not restricted to those listed here and each application will be considered on its merit and on the relevant supporting documentation. A serious medical condition, psychiatric illness, severe depression and/or substance addiction. Ongoing serious family issues, including illness, abusive situations, socio-economic disadvantage. Death of a close relative or friend. Political unrest or disaster, which places family members in jeopardy in home country. An accident or trauma which may or may not also cause a temporary medical/mental condition. A combination of moderate problems. The following list provides some examples of circumstances which do not constitute grounds for Special Consideration. Non-completion of a pre-requisite or co-requisite unit. Timetable clashes and/or misreading timetable. Heavy academic workload and/or professional experience requirements. Work or sporting commitments Family commitments such as preparing for a wedding, party or event. Travel commitments. Any claim which are unsubstantiated by relevant supporting documentation. In the event that a student receives a grade of 45-50% the student may be eligible to apply for special consideration for supplementary assessment. 8 Clinical Hurdles Many streams will have clinical hurdles specific to each stream or clinical area. The clinical hurdles are designed to prepare the student for advanced nursing practice. Hurdles will require familiarization with local protocols and equipment and may require workbook books to be completed prior to undertaking the hurdle. Clinical hurdles will be undertaken in your clinical environment with your local clinical educators. It is the student s responsibility to book their hurdle assessment dates with their stream educator. Clinical Appraisals As part of your postgraduate year you will undertake a formative and summative appraisal each semester. The aim of the clinical appraisal is for the student and educator to identify and discuss student strengths and to self-reflect and identify areas for further development. The clinical appraisal will be conducted in your clinical environment by your local clinical educators. It is the students responsibility to organise times with their stream educator. 7

A lift from the car park goes directly to the foyer of the main hospital building. 11 Postgraduate qualification allowance On completion of a postgraduate qualification, nurses are eligible for an allowance under the current nurses award EBA. This allowance is calculated as: Certificate shall be paid, in addition to their salary, 4% of the base rate Postgraduate diploma 6.5% of the Base Masters or Doctorate shall be paid in addition to their salary, 7.5% of the base rate To claim a postgraduate allowance: ACU Complete all academic requirements for your course Receive official statement of results from your clinical educators (this should be signed and dated) Complete ACU Credit Form. 12 Postgraduate pathways Once you have completed you post graduate certificate you can continue on to further study and complete your post graduate diploma or master s degree. Please refer to the relevant university website for further information. Graduate Certificate = 4 subjects (40 credit points) Graduate Diploma = 80 credit points You will complete the same subjects as the Graduate certificate plus an additional 40 points. Refer to the ACU website for a list of required subjects. 13 Graduate certificate = 2 subjects (60 credit points) Graduate Diploma = 120 credit points You will complete the same subjects as the Graduate Certificate plus an additional 60 points that include 2 core subjects and 2 elective subjects. Masters = 180 credit points Following completion of the Post Graduate diploma requirements you need to complete a further 60 credit points as either a clinical project or an independent study unit or minor thesis. 15 Masters of Nursing (Intensive Care) LaTrobe University Stream Facilitators: Mandy Voss Elizabeth Delaney Ph The Department of Critical Care Medicine is an open plan level 3 tertiary referral unit encompassing a 13 bed intensive care and 4 bed high dependency area. The department receives patients internally from the ward environment, Operating Theatre and Emergency Department, and externally from metropolitan and rural hospitals and the Ambulance Retrieval in Victoria. Patients present with a wide range of clinical conditions that require intensive nursing care and complex management strategies, including cardiothoracic surgery, neurosurgery, haematology, medical and general surgery (gastrointestinal, orthopaedic and plastics). The department provides advanced clinical care including complex haemodynamic monitoring, ECMO, IABP, sophisticated mechanical ventilation support, and renal replacement therapies supported by state of the art technology. It maintains the Medical Emergency Team (MET), Critical Care Liaison Team (CCLN) and the Tracheostomy Service, providing support and management of patients at risk of becoming critically ill in the ward area. Subject Facilitation To apply for Intensive care you enroll in the course at the Master s degree level. After completing 2 (30 point) subjects you may choose to exit the course at the graduate certificate level or continue to complete the Masters subjects. Clinical Postgraduate Certificate The two subjects for a Postgraduate certificate are core, they have an online component, 6 structured local study days and clinical time and facilitated by Intensive care educators. 1. These skills will be supported by a foundational knowledge of safe practice within the intensive care unit Students will gain an understanding of the underlying pathophysiology of health problems commonly encountered in the critically ill and of the scientific basis of therapeutic interventions commonly employed in the management of the critically ill. 17 Masters of Nursing (Emergency) LaTrobe University Stream Facilitators: Marg Maslin Rosa Falcone Ph St Vincent s Emergency Care Department is a 39 bay department including, 15 observational beds, 16 general cubicles, with monitoring capabilities, a behavioral assessment room and a fast track area. The Emergency Course offers clinical experience and education in the areas of resuscitation, triage, acute medical and surgical care and major and minor trauma care. Course Facilitation To apply for Emergency you enroll in the course at the Master s degree level. After completing 2 (30 point) subjects you may choose to exit the course at the graduate certificate level or continue to complete the Masters subjects. Skills At the completion of the course students will be expected to be proficient in all areas of the emergency care centre, including triage, team leader in the resuscitation room, and all cubicle areas. Subject Facilitation The course is offered in conjunction with the Peter MaCallum Cancer Centre and the University of Melbourne. The certificate is offered part time over 2 semesters and the diploma can be undertaken on a full-time or part-time basis over months. The course consists of both a theoretical and clinical component and lectures are delivered at Peter McCallum Cancer Centre supported by online clinical tutorials and a dedicated clinical educator. Contact Hours: 54 hours off-campus lectures (Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre). Field practice component of a minimum of 300 hours Skills gained The course is designed to promote development of theoretical knowledge to support safe practice as a beginning level specialty nurse in the clinical environment of Cancer & Palliative Care. You will increase your understanding in the pathophysiology of cancer and carcinogenesis, and the principles of cure, control, symptom management and palliation. The impact of diagnosis, treatment, prognosis and survivorship on the person confronted with a life threatening illness and their family will be explored. Throughout the subject the development of knowledge and skills in therapeutic communication will be assessed, and providing physical and psychosocial care across the disease trajectory will be promoted.
