Washington Adventist Hospital s Initiative A modern, 21 st century replacement hospital & medical campus in the hospital s existing primary service area Slightly fewer inpatient beds than existing hospital Adjacent to the FDA, building on existing research collaboration for the benefit of public health Accessible by public transportation & major roadways Addresses needs of area s growing & aging population Population growth in region (Konterra, Percontee, BRAC) plus aging in the hospital s service area will mitigate impact to other hospitals. Will retain campus in Takoma Park for health care services 4

Takoma Park Campus
Unsustainable Challenges for Washington Adventist Hospital Small campus Difficult to access for patients, ambulances, employees - Surrounded by narrow, two lane residential streets - Limited public transportation no Metrobus access Insufficient space on campus/in area for critically needed outpatient services and doctor s offices Aging and outdated facilities that cannot be sustained - About 1/3 of inpatient beds in building that is 60 years old Cannot rebuild on campus The hospital is not sustainable long term with its current facilities and location. 11
Enhanced Public Health Research FDA in 2008 Letter to Montgomery County planning official: The development of a modern hospital facility and affiliated medical services on Washington Adventist Hospital s property is a once-in-a-lifetime complement to research and medical programs on our FDA campus. FDA & Washington Adventist have signed a formal MOU to collaborate on medical research. Connectivity with FDA noted by Dr. Louis Sullivan, former Secretary of HHS and Dr. David Kessler, former Commissioner of FDA, both of whom support the initiative. 12
Job Creation Through Maryland s Innovation Economy Formal econometric analysis by regional economic expert Stephen Fuller, Ph.D., Director, Center for Regional Analysis at George Mason University: - The location of WAH at White Oak has the potential of rationalizing and magnifying the economic and market forces that can be focused within the Science Corridor thereby starting a development process that ultimately will represent new private investment totaling more than $5 billion, providing work space for more than 8,000 workers beyond those employed on the FDA campus... - WAH s established relationship with the FDA, its role as a service provider and catalyst within the community, its employment and economic impacts, and impacts as a market maker are relatively unique to a single organization. 13
Job Creation Through Maryland s Innovation Economy Stephen Fuller s Report: - WAH is the critical next component in creating the necessary conditions within the Science Corridor to achieve its full development potential. - WAH s position in this development sequence is unique: WAH can help extend FDA s economic benefits from its activities housed at White Oak into the local economy; WAH can be a major economic generator unto itself that will strengthen the surrounding markets for supporting land uses; WAH can generate investors confidence within the Science Corridor that to date has not materialized ; and WAH can stimulate significant new investment on adjacent properties. 14
Job Creation Through Maryland s Innovation Economy Stephen Fuller s Report continued: - Hospital construction will contribute $553.2 million to the State s economy - Hospital construction will create new earnings totaling $167.8 million for Maryland workers - Project will support 2,892 construction jobs for State residents - Statewide economic impacts of post-construction operating outlays by Adventist HealthCare at White Oak and Takoma Park will contribute $630.8 million to the State s economy, supporting 4,698 jobs for Maryland residents with earnings totaling $211.4 million annually. 15
