Email Neil Bubel nbubel@rebuildingdallas.org or call our office at 972.636.8039 Why are these services needed? The number of low-income homeowners increases each year. Currently, 6 million lowincome homeowner families live with broken heating and plumbing holes in walls and windows, roach and rodent infestation, falling plaster, crumbling foundations and leaking roofs (Rebuilding Together National Impact Statement). According to the 2009 U. S. Census Bureau Population estimates, the number of persons 60+ in Dallas County is 304,519. Population projections provided by the Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services estimate a 19.5 percent increase in this group, bringing the total to 364,095 in 2019. According to the 2011 Census, there are more than 32,000 seniors living below the poverty line in Dallas County. It becomes increasingly difficult to maintain one s home as taxes increase and property values fall, or when income is fixed or lost. Those hardest hit are the elderly, the disabled and families with children. More and more families are placed in the position of choosing between vital necessities, such as food or medicine, or a roof that doesn t leak. Rebuilding Together Greater Dallas works to ensure that as many of those families as possible do not have to make these difficult choices. What type of work is done? Volunteers join with a leadership team and skilled trades people to rehab a home. Examples of typical projects include: Safety and Accessibility Modifications installing smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, outdoor security lights, grab bars, shower seats, higher toilets, stair rails, lever door handles, no-slip stair treads, handicapped ramps, eliminating trip and fall hazards, and others. General Repair & Maintenance electrical and plumbing upgrades, wall repair, roof repair, landscaping to divert water from home or prevent erosion, work orders issued by city or county housing inspections, and additional repairs as needed. Weatherization & Energy/Environmental-Efficiency installing insulation, caulking, re-glazing or replacing windows, replacing appliances with Energy Star-rated models, installing low-flow water faucets and toilets, to name a few. Who sponsors Rebuilding Together? Funds come from generous individuals, corporations, labor organizations, foundations, civic organizations, and faithbased organizations that are interested in helping to build a better world. As a local affiliate of Rebuilding Together, Inc., Rebuilding Together Greater Dallas does its own fundraising, publicity, volunteer recruitment, and management. All funds raised support residents of Dallas County Rebuilding Together, Inc. and Rebuilding Together Greater Dallas is non-profit, non-sectarian organizations supported by voluntary contributions of time and money.
