4 THE UAE HIGHER EDUCATION FACTBOOK, 2013/2014

Dear readers, We are pleased to introduce the first statistics guide on higher education in the United Arab Emirates in the academic year 2013/2014. The decision to release the guide is based on the understanding of the crucial role that educational statistics and indicators play for strategic planning and development of the country. Data collection and analysis as well as the conclusions made after data interpretation reflect an actual situation in the field of higher education in the country and help policy and decision makers to determine the quantitative and qualitative approaches to the development of education policy and education system consistent with the UAE National Agenda, which leads to the UAE Vision 2021. The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MOHESR) has published the guide to ensure that reliable statistics on higher education is accessible to decision makers as well as specialists, stakeholders, researchers and students to assist them in planning, research and studies in this field. The guide is divided into five main parts. Part I includes statistics on the federal and non-federal institutions as well as the programs recognized by MOHESR. Statistics on enrollment and graduates are included into parts II and III. Part IV embraces data on faculty members and staff, while Part V contains financial statements and expenditures in the federal and nonfederal institutions of higher education along with statistics on scholarships and certificate equivalency and attestation. In conclusion, we would like to express hope that the guide will achieve the desired goal. We appreciate the efforts made by the working group at the Department of Higher Education Planning and Coordination at MOHESR. We are grateful to all higher education institutions that shared their information and data required to complete the guide and make it successful. Hamdan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research 5
