You can contact me by e-mail or Skype after June 12. Pre-requisite: This course does not have pre-requisites. You need to download and submit the Consent for Online Grades to access your grades on Blackboard. Remember that this is a summer course. You need to have a pro-active approach to deal with the different assignments and due dates as one week in summer equals one month of class work in a regular semester. Therefore, you need to access Blackboard, the simulation, and/or check your student e-mail at least once a day. Course Materials Free Text: Rules for Growth from the Kauffman Foundation [available for download on Blackboard] Simulation: Entrepreneur from Interpretive.com please check on Blackboard for more information. Additional Readings and Videos: Those will be available on the course modules. Course Objectives Upon completion of this course, you should be able to: 1. Define and describe the entrepreneur and the entrepreneurial process of opportunity recognition (COB Learning Goals: Written Communication, Business Knowledge). 2. Understand the important role of an entrepreneur in the economy, society, and particular industries (COB Learning Goals: Critical Thinking, Business Knowledge) 3. Analyze business, economic crisis, and society problems to develop viable entrepreneurial opportunities (COB Learning Goals: Critical Thinking, Business Knowledge, and Ethics). 4. Assess your knowledge and potential business outcomes when running a small retail shop in an online simulation (COB Learning Goals: Critical Thinking, Business Knowledge, and Technology). 5. Develop a new business idea proposal to explore or exploit in the future (COB Learning Goals: Written Communication, Critical Thinking, and Business Knowledge). Students are required to read and understand what is stated in the syllabus. In the event of typos/mistakes found after it is distributed, amendments will be given.

Overview of the course Entrepreneurship MGMT 3183 Entrepreneurship is more than just creating new businesses. It is a process of recognizing and exploiting new combinations that contributes to the economic development of a community and entire regions. In that manner, you can use this course for your own benefit to increase your entrepreneurial aspirations or even to understand what it takes to work for a company that demands an entrepreneurial behavior to compete with the current market trends. In that manner, this is a course that you need to enhance your education at ASU and prepare you for your future professional career. Because the course is intensive and online, we will not have lectures. Instead, you will work in a virtual environment where e-mail, online communications, and technology will guide your progress in the course. In that manner, you will read what entrepreneurship is about, you will watch what entrepreneurship has done to create industries, you will know who has created empires and new ways to improve everybody s life, and you will watch and read about the consequences and challenges the American economy has endured since 1987 so you can understand the current state of the country at this time in the present. Finally, you will have two chances to exploit and explore your entrepreneurial aspirations. On one side, you will work on the Entrepreneur simulation with the task of managing a small retail shop. On the other side, you will prepare a proposal for a new business idea that needs to be creative, interesting, and with the potential to become a real business in the near future. Course Content The content of the course is divided into four main grade components: [A] Writing assignments from reading; [B] Short answer reactions and comments to videos; [C] Online Simulation (Entrepreneur), and [D] A New Business Idea Proposal. You need to access Blackboard continuously to keep track on the different assignments as due dates will not be moved and no late work will be accepted. In the event that you have a valid university excuse, you will need to provide valid documentation before an assignment is due and communicate with me about potential arrangements. You can check the last page of the syllabus for a summary of the due dates. The due time for all the assignments will be 9PM CST. [A] Writing assignments [150 points] Throughout the summer session you have two writing assignments that are worth 75 points each [no substitutions]. The assignment instructions will be posted on Blackboard. The assignments are individual-based. Theory assignment: [75 points]: You will need to read a series of articles about entrepreneurship and the entrepreneur. After your reading, you will prepare a report that will cover the main aspects of the readings. The readings will be available at the start of the summer session. This assignment is due on MON June 13 @ 9PM CST Rules for Growth Chapter Review [75 points]: The Kauffman Foundation recently edited a book entitled Rules for Growth. The book is free to download and a copy has been stored in Blackboard. Your assignment is to read ONE chapter of the book and prepare a report that summarizes the main propositions of the chapter. Chapters will be assigned randomly no later than FRI June 10 so you will have at least 1 week to prepare the report. This assignment is due on FRI June 17 @ 9PM CST. [B] Videos [350 points] You will watch 9 videos that cover the importance of entrepreneurship. All videos have been uploaded on Blackboard and they will become available for a limited viewing time. Each video assignment will have particular instructions on what I expect you to do. Each video assignment is worth 50 points and you need to work individually. I will consider your TOP 7 video assignments for your final grade. Put differently, you are free to miss up to TWO video assignments during the summer session. The duration of each video is about 50 minutes on average. 2

Entrepreneurship MGMT 3183 [C] Entrepreneur Online Simulation [375 points] Entrepreneur is an online simulation where you have the opportunity to experience many of the challenges faced by entrepreneurs in the real world. The simulation access costs $29.95 and you can pay using a credit or debit card. You will receive an email from Interpretive Simulations with the registration information, user ID and password. Registration will open on MON May 29 and the first practice round is due by TH June 9 @ 9PM CST. Please contact me if you lack a card [debit/credit] so I can use mine and you pay me cash. This will be a Virtual-Team type of work to resemble what is happening these days in different companies. You will be assigned to groups of 2 or 3 [depending on class size] and take the role of running the operations of a specialty retail clothing store for 10 periods [and 1 practice round]. The simulation settings allow teams to enter the first 5 decisions no later than TH June 16th and the last 5 decisions no later than WED June 29. However, the expectation is that you plan on entering your simulation decisions on a regular basis from MON to TH [please check schedule on the last page of the course syllabus]. The simulation will be graded on the following manner: Multiple Choice Quiz 25 [individual based] Peer Evaluation 50 [individual based] Simulation Activity 75 [individual based] Case Assignment 25 [team based] Simulation Team Performance 75 [team based] Management Audit 125 [team based] Total 375 points Please recall that the simulation is a team-based activity. If you do not work with your team, your individual grade will suffer. [D] New Business Idea Proposal [125 points] By the end of the semester, you will propose a new business idea that can be explored in the future. I will provide content on Blackboard [articles from New York Times and the first episodes of Dilbert, the series] to foster your entrepreneurial mindset as I want the proposals to be interesting, innovating, and with the possibility of creating real value. A first draft of the proposal is due on MON June 20 [25 points] and a final draft is due on TH June 30 [100 points]. Writing Assignments [2 @ 75 points] Video Assignments [Top 7 @ 50 points] Entrepreneur Simulation New Business Idea Proposal Total Grade composition 150 points 350 points 375 points 125 points 1000 points The Final-Grading Policy is as follows: A: 899.0 to 1000 B: 799.0 to 898.99 C: 699.0 to 798.999 D: 599.0 to 699.999 F: 0 to 598.999 Grades Policies and Administration: Students can ask questions and feedback related to what is needed to improve in future assignments as assignments will not be re-graded. I can only check for calculation mistakes. I do not round under any circumstances, for example, 898.0 is a B.. Once final grades are released, no extra credit or assignments will be allowed at the end of the semester for students to change their grades. After I made grades available on Blackboard, I do not discuss or answer individual questions related to grade changes (e.g. D to a C, etc). 3

Policies and Regulations Entrepreneurship MGMT 3183 Use of Blackboard and online communications You need to sign a form to access your grades online. In addition, I email students when additional information is needed so checking your e-mail is highly important for your class performance. Remember, this class only meets online so you need to know how to work online, have a working internet connection at home, or you need to be in any of the ASU computer labs to do your work. Also, you need to know how to access and use Blackboard as the majority of the assignments will be uploaded directly [no e-mail or digital drop box submission is allowed]. Physical Presence in Jonesboro Campus I will be available in Jonesboro from May 29 until June 9. During that time you can call, email, text me or visit me in my office. Then, I will be managing the course from Guatemala so I can communicate only via e-mail or do videoconferencing via Skype. Make-up exams and assignments: NO MAKE-UP ASSIGNMENTS and NO LATE WORK are accepted. The course is designed to give you reasonable time to complete the assignments as due time for work is 9PM CST. Once the due time passes, I will not re-open assignments. You have to check with me for solutions about missing a particular assignment when you have a valid and properly documented university excuse. Otherwise, you will not receive points for those missing assignments. Also, your simulation grade can be affected by the evaluation of your team. Policy for Absences I will only accept University approved excuses. If a class assignment is missed, the student must have a University excuse and provide proper documentation to support the absence. When students are aware that they must miss a class for a legitimate medical or university-related reason, they must fax or email the instructor with written documentation BEFORE the day in question. If students miss an activity due to an unforeseen emergency totally beyond their control, they must provide written documentation of the reason for the absence and/or provide a way for the instructor to verify the cause of the absence. The instructor reserves the right to reject excuses that are not legitimate as defined above. All unexcused absences will result in a 0 for the missed activity. ADA Statement If you need accommodations because of a disability, if you have emergency medical information to share with me, or if you need special arrangements, please inform me immediately after class or in my office. To request academic accommodations (for example, a note taker), students must also register with Disability Services, Student Union building, Suite 2181 (870.972.3964). It is the campus office responsible for reviewing documentation provided by students requesting academic accommodations, and for accommodations planning in cooperation with students and instructors, as needed and consistent with course requirements. For other ASU resources for students with disabilities, go to Disability Services on the ASU homepage. Academic Misconduct Policy All students of Arkansas State University system enrolled in credit or non-credit classes are subject to the Honor Code for academic matters. For detailed information about the university policy, please go to http://studentconduct.astate.edu/academicintegrity.html. If I discover any dishonest activity, I will either (a) give a failing grade on that exam or assignment for all parties or (b) assign a failing grade for the course and refer the case to the student conduct system for further sanctions. If you have any further questions regarding University policy regarding academic honesty, please see me, your academic advisor, or other University official. You should also consult the ASU Student handbook; in particular, the section entitled Academic Integrity Policy. Other Policies and Regulations: For situations not covered under this syllabus, please refer to your Student Handbook and other University, College, and Departmental policies. 4
