Service centres for pensioners and the unemployed The service and recreation centres offer you a chance to take care of your own well-being. You will find the following services in all service centres, among others: Meal and cafeteria services Library and Internet services, and the chance to read the daily newspapers Hobby and recreational activities for example, exercise, handicrafts, language courses, computer classes, field trips, parties Peer support groups and help with different situations in life Guidance and advice on the use of the services Voluntary work In addition to the services common to all centres, different centres focus on different services. All service centres have a Facility User Board, which consists of its customers, and which participates in the planning of the activities. The activities are organised by, for example, the Social Services Department, volunteers, associations, organisations, peer support groups, the adult education centre, congregations, the Sports Department, and the library. Most of the activities are organised during the day, but gatherings and events are also organised in the evenings. By acquiring a free service centre card, you can participate in the activities organised by the city in all the centres. 3

The Kamppi service centre is easy to reach, as it is located next to the bus station and the Kamppi metro station. Kamppi is the largest service centre in the city. It is a forward-looking activity centre focused on learning and caring. You can participate in different groups, play music, do handicrafts, paint, and play several games in the service centre. The customers can get together and share their experiences in the Kamppi Chamber, or in a men s group, for example. Many organisations and associations organise peer support activities in Kamppi. In addition, religious activities in the centre provide support and strength. The activities in the Kamppi service centre are planned by customers, volunteers, and staff together the activities are based on interaction and participation. 5

There are two entrances, Kinaporinkatu 9 A and Hämeentie 58-60. 6 The Kinapori service centre is located in Sörnäinen, in the middle of it all. There are many hobby possibilities in Kinapori among the versatile handicrafts groups. You can weave, sew, do ceramics, porcelain or glass works, or work in the wellequipped wood and metal workshops. You can also do many different kinds of exercise classes. The customers can use the sauna and the swimming pool, as well as the laundry room. The Service Counsellor and the Social Instructor help with everyday problems. You can measure your blood pressure and weigh yourself in the ITE point. There are many goal-oriented group activities in Kinapori, for example, memory, discussion and play groups. The volunteers in Kinapori organise jumble sales, exercise classes, trips, and event and friend activities. They also publish magazines, help in the cafeteria and in the dining room, and manage the cloakroom. Kinapori has a restaurant, a cafeteria, a library, and assisted computer use. Private service providers, such as a pedicurist, hairdresser, and a massage therapist, also offer different services.
There are hobby possibilities for everyone in the service centres. You can do metal and wood works, weave and print cloth, sew, and felt. Handicrafts courses are organised for porcelain painting, lace-making, ceramics, painting, and mosaic works. 7
8 Elderly people are encouraged to join the computer age, and computers and the Internet are available in the service centres.

The Kontula service centre offers an active everyday life. There are many different thematic groups based on activities and interaction in Kontula. You can do handicrafts by weaving a rug or on different courses, for example. Programmed events are offered every week. You can stop by the cafeteria in the afternoon on weekdays. You can eat in the lunch restaurant on weekdays as well as on weekends. You can talk confidentially and privately with the Social Instructors, and participate in their groups. They also give advice on social and health services. There are also multi-cultural groups in the service centre. Kontula also has a library and a computer. Volunteers can assist the customers in computer use. A private hairdresser is available. 9

The facilities of the service centre are among the buildings of the retirement home in a green parkland. The services include many versatile groups focused on improving physical fitness and refreshment. In the handicrafts groups, you can do tiffany glass works, sew under guidance, or weave. There are also peer groups, a discussion group, Friday cafe, social and health guidance and studying in the university for the elderly. Trips to museums, theatres, and other cities are organised from the service centre. The Kartano restaurant is located in the K building, and it is open on weekdays from 8 am to 3 pm and on weekends from 10 am to 3 pm. The lunch times are from 10.50 am to 1.30 pm. The menu can be found on the Internet. The service centre also has a library and a private hairdresser.
Exercise is an important part of well-being for people of all ages. The versatile exercise activities of the service centres include guided exercise, gymnastics groups, gym exercises, dance and yoga, among others. 11

By K and I trains to Malmi station, and then about a 500 m walk. The Malmi recreation centre operates in a red manor house, a short walk away from the centre of Malmi. Exercise and dance groups, a bridge club, a painting group, a singing group and different hobby groups organised by associations come together in the two floors of the main building. There is a wood workshop in the lower floor of the second building, and a weaving room and different handicrafts courses on its second floor. There is no elevator in the buildings. The customers can use a computer and the Internet in the centre. The recreation centre also offers activities for elderly immigrants. You can measure your blood pressure and weigh yourself in the ITE point. 12

The Meilahti recreation centre is in the middle of beautiful nature, next to the sea and near Seurasaari. The recreation centre operates in an elegant wooden manor house built in 1900, and is filled with the warm spirit of the beginning of the last century. Programmed activities include different exercise groups, trips, concerts, yard improvement events, music events, parties, and other recreational activities. Sing-alongs are organised on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Some courses by the adult education centres are also organised in the recreation centre. During summer we barbecue outside and enjoy the nice atmosphere. You can grow your own crops on small plots in the yard. You can have service guidance for different life situations in the recreation centre. The Councillors guide you in searching for services and in seeking for information, and they help you to clear up matters. There is also a possibility to measure your blood pressure. The recreation centre facilities are rented during weekends for private events and parties. 13

The customers and staff of the Munkkiniemi service centre organise versatile activities together with organisations and peer support groups. Cultural activities include language courses, lectures, a painting group and trips to art exhibits, for example. Concerts, lectures, choir activities and singalongs in Finnish and Swedish are organised for music lovers. There are exercise groups for each day: Yoga, tai chi, different gymnastics from stretching to chair gymnastics, line dancing and boccia. There is also a gym in the service centre. You can have computer guidance every day, the guidance time can be reserved at the centre. The restaurant has a cafeteria, lunch, and also an alcohol license. The staff provides guidance services, and social instruction is given by a Social Worker. The customers can use the ITE points in the health station of the same building. 15

You can participate in the discussion group regularly, or whenever you feel like it. There are support groups once a week for family carers, both men and women. You can choose your exercise classes according to your health and preference. You can get valuable information about wellness and health in the ITE point. You can discuss confidentially with a guiding Social Instructor. The Social Instructor will also help you to search for services. The pleasant library has all the librarian services as well as a computer with an Internet connection. The combined restaurant and cafeteria is situated near the entrance, and also has an outside terrace during summertime. The restaurant has an alcohol license. The service centre also has a private massage therapist, hairdresser, foot therapist, and classical homeopath.
The self care points, also known as ITE points, offer material on health and wellness. They also offer you the possibility to measure your blood pressure and weigh yourself. 17

Saunabaari offers many different handicrafts courses, cloth weaving, and the possibility to use sewing machines and seaming machines. Exercise and activity groups, lectures and events are organised together with the adult education centre, Suburban Sports and neighbourhood associations. The open and active volunteer groups formed by the customers create a very social atmosphere in the centre. You can have a light lunch in the cafeteria, and there are computers with Internet connections for the customers. You can have guidance for computer use, if you wish.
Töölö service centre Starts its activities during autumn 2009 in new and improved facilities!
