Information Integration WHAT IS IT??... It is to focus in information, business process and a dedication to gain knowledge.. It is also hard to achieve but worth the effort.. It includes, to me, Business Intelligence, Information Management and integration..
The Datawarehouse MUST.. make an organization s information easily available present the organization s information consistently be adaptive and resilient to change a secure bastion that protects our information assets serve as the foundation for improved decision making The business community must accept the data warehouse if it is to be deemed successful
So Business Intelligence Is it the answer to all problems NO It can, and should be an important driver BUT
BI is often expensive and hard to manage from and IT perspective We have found that many BI solution has evolved over time, which is ok, but as a consequence, an initially suitable architecture does no longer work. BI solutions are often made with strong business drive which may result in a architecture that is hard to manage. As IT department you have to run and support a solution that does not fit standards and best practice
Business users often not satisfied Complaints regarding bad data quality, slow response time, long development time for new functionality, no information regarding definition and information sources often resulting in low usage and limited business value Often due to inappropriate architecture and unclear responsibilities An assessment gives health check and a road map to solve the most important issues so that small steps can be taken to give a solution that has much lower TCO (cost cuts sometimes more than 50%) Satisfied end users increase business value and usage
Several disparate solutions Due to different demands, organizational changes, company merges it is not unusual with several system with sometimes overlapping functionality and aim but very different architectures and products Consolidating and rebuilding on a common architecture can give significant savings on software, hardware, application operation and gives a good platform form information management
Lesson learned.. Business Intelligence should learn lesson from integration solution regarding architecture Information should be well defined and agreed upon But.. Who owns information, where it is used what are the definitions These are question that concerns IT and Business issues and affects BI as well as system and process integration
BICC (Business intelligence competence centers) the sales pitch Focus on business needs and business driven solution A part of management, not an IT issue Many companies regard BI and Information Management as vital Need to have in house competence, not driven by consultants Maybe synergy with Integration Competence Centers VERY SELDOM WORKS
BICC (Business intelligence competence centers) A good idea, but it does not handle the more important information agenda.. BI always starts with business processes and information demands, There are some important steps Define information needs Connect to process Work with business terms and their definitions connected to resources.
EIM, MDM TAKING DATA SERIOUSLY - INFORMATION EIM Enterprise Information Management An organizational commitment to structure, secure and improve the accuracy and integrity of information assets, to solve semantic inconsistencies across all boundaries, and support the technical, operational and business objectives within the organization's enterprise architecture strategy. MDM Master Data Management The set of disciplines, technologies, and solutions used to create and maintain consistent, complete, contextual and accurate business data for all stakeholders (users, applications, data warehouses, processes, companies, trading partners, customers, etc.) across and beyond the enterprise EIM is the Enterprise Strategy MDM can be viewed the operational handling of organization, workflows and technical platforms needed to manage master data

IS INFORMATION WAREHOUSE COMPLEX? Yes, and no there are basic architectures that work well (Baseline ETL) ESB I N T E G R A T I O N
MDM information and data quality Two VERY diverse demands Organization and structure to handle data definitions (terms) and data quality Close to BI issues Real time integrations to make sure that changes in master data is propagated to all relevant system in timely manner Most BI persons don t have a clue..
The Information agenda Define terms Two perspectives The ideal Abstract and nice to have quite often not that relevant for business How terms are used in real life Conveys how term are used in most everyday situations, sales, supply, it We need both.. eventually Both perspectives can become data models.. One is a logical ideal, one is the way people usually think about information
Example CUSTOMER The ideal customer is an instance of party Real life a Customer number is SAP, someone who have bought something, someone we might sell to All are true and relevant. The ideal is an objective view the real life is a subjective view
PROCESS ANALYSIS Terms & definitions
Connect term to resorces Applications Integrations Databases Messages We can se information linage from birth to slow death in data warehouse history tables
Master data integration When we know what system that is master we should make sure that all other systems get that from that system If we have a Data Warehouse and have done things correctly we ca add data flow from master to other system quite easily
Predictive analysis and integration Analyze and discover significant patterns Create model Apply model Classify orders by importance Route complains, error logs and other unstructured messages to appropriate step in a process
Analyzes becomes rules in process Process most important orders Create real time alerts based in history, correlations and dynamic rules Look at information content in integration, not just number if messages.
