Dear Colleagues, On behalf of the European Shoulder Associates (ESA), a section of the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy (ESSKA), we cordially invite you to the First ESA Meeting Management of failed shoulder surgery, which will be held in Rome, Italy. This is the first official meeting of ESA after its foundation as the ESSKA section dedicated to shoulder surgery. The meeting will focus on the management of failures of surgical treatment of different pathological conditions around the shoulder, such as: instability of the glenohumeral joint and of the acromio-clavicular joint, rotator cuff disease and pathology of the long head of the biceps tendon, and glenohumeral osteoarthritis. There will also be a special focus on failure of shoulder arthroplasty. Current status of management of failures of shoulder surgical procedures will be presented by leading ESA experts together with other noted shoulder experts. This will be a consensus meeting with peer-reviewed lectures and panel discussions of challenging cases. We will use the voting system for greater interaction during sessions. The meeting represents a great opportunity to address controversial topics about the shoulder and may lead to a valid update for orthopedic surgeons which may also extend to other medical and health practitioners, such as: sports medicine doctors, physical medicine doctors, and physical therapists. ESA, in the best traditions of ESSKA, stands for Excellence in Shoulder Treatment and this will be demonstrated at the meeting. The Eternal City will be a perfect location for this first ESA Meeting. Rome is one of the world s most attractive cities - not surprising when you remember what s here -The Vatican, the Trevi Fountain, St Peter s Square, Spanish Steps, Colosseum. Rome is a romantic place, where modern and old, past and present go side by side, all the time. Enjoy your first ESA meeting in Rome! Sincerely, Giuseppe Milano, MD Andrea Grasso, MD Scientific Programme Chairmen 3

OTHER USEFUL INFORMATION CITY OF ROME Rome, the eternal city, is so called because it is a place of great beauty, contrast and life. Rome is an eclectic city: the religious world centre of Catholic Church, the fabulous ruins of the centre of the Roman Empire, and modern, bustling Rome. All three seem incongruous, yet they live inside and beside each other with great ease. You will soon realise Rome was build to rule and dominate the world. Everything is on a massive scale, solid and eternal. Rome, the city that inspired poets and writers, philosophers and politicians, popes, and kings, travellers and students, is ready to embrace you and to charm you with its warmth, its friendly smile, its great food and its magic. WEATHER The weather in Rome in October is pleasantly warm during the whole day, but for the outdoor events a light sweater will be useful. We recommend to bring a raincoat or umbrella for occasional rains which may occur. The average temperature is around 20-25 C. CURRENCY The official currency in Italy is Euro ( ). BANKS Traditional bank business hours are from Monday to Friday, 8.20-13.30 and are usually closed on Saturday and Sunday. All bank agencies have automatic cash machines located outside to provide 24-hours service. CREDIT CARDS Major credit cards are accepted by hotels, shops and restaurants. ELECTRICITY Electricity in Italy is supplied at 220V - 50Hz AC. FIRST AID & HOSPITAL SERVICES For very urgent and serious events call the free 118 emergency ambulance service or go to one of the Pronto Soccorso (First Aid) emergency units of the hospitals. For babies and children there s the Ospedale Bambino Gesù; for dentist urgencies and specialist dental care you may go to the G. Eastman dental hospital. For less serious matters you may go as well to the Pronto Soccorso or to the Touristic Medicine Service as written below. TELEPHONE NUMBERS Emergency telephone numbers are composed of three digits and can be dialed from mobile telephones and phone boxes free of charge. When phoning from outside Italy, first dial +39 (or 00 39) followed by the nine-digit number. 13

IMPORTANT TELEPHONE NUMBERS 112 general emergency number 118 ambulance/first aid 113 police 115 fire brigade OTHER USEFUL INFORMATION SHOPPING Most shops in Rome are open 10.00-19.00 from Monday to Saturday, some of them are open also on Sunday. Shopping in Italy is an experience in itself; the extensive fashion stores and shopping malls advertise the latest fashion trends existing in Italy. TAXIS Taxis are white or yellow, with an identification name and number on the front door and a taximeter inside. You find them in taxi parkings or can call a radiotaxi (we list here some taxi companies +39-06/3570; +39-06/6645; +39-06/822; +39-06/157; +39-06/4994; +39-06/5551) TIME ZONE Italian Standard Time is 1 hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (2 hours during the summer time) 14
