Write the Course ID here: Contact your instructor to get instructions on what Student ID to use if your instructor plans to assign you specific homework assignments from within MasteringPhysics. The Student ID may be your college ID, the last 4 digits of your social security number, or something else your instructor uses to identify you. Write your Student ID here: Your student access code is a six word printed code supplied beneath the pull-tab inside your MasteringPhysics Student Access Kit. Each code is valid for a single student only. If the tab in this kit has been pulled back prior to your using it, the code may no longer be valid. In this case, you can purchase access online using a credit card. To purchase access online, go to www.masteringphysics.com, 1

You access your MasteringPhysics online course with an Internet connection and a web browser, such as Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator. You may be able to register and enroll by simply following the online instructions available by going to www.masteringphysics.com, clicking the appropriate title, and clicking Register. If you prefer written instructions, use this booklet as your guide. (Students who do not have a student access code can use an American Express, MasterCard, or VISA card to register and enroll in an online MasteringPhysics course. In this case, click the link to purchase online access and follow the on-screen instructions. Your registration process will differ slightly from the instructions in this booklet.) (You may buy access online for any book title. If you bought a used copy of the text, please select that book s title to purchase MasteringPhysics.) Registration Tips On-screen boxes marked with an asterisk (*) are required. You must type an entry or make a selection to continue with online registration. If you skip one of these boxes and click Next, you will be prompted for an entry. If you ever get stuck while registering, you can always find information by clicking this icon online: If your online registration is interrupted, you can always go back and restart. Your student access code is valid until you complete the registration process successfully. If you ever need to change anything during registration, click the Back button to return to the previous page. (You will not lose any information you have already entered by going backward.) You can also edit or update your account information later, by clicking the View Your Account Summary link. Okay, let s get started... Go to www.masteringphysics.com and click the appropriate book cover of your textbook, and click Register. Your access code/do you have an account? Pull back the tab on the inside front cover of the student access kit to reveal your student access code. Type your six word student access code, inserting one word in each box. Don t type the dashes. Note: Once you enroll in this online course, you will not need this access code any longer. 3

Type your existing login name (or user ID) and password that you have used for a Pearson Education online site or course materials that accompanied a textbook published by Addison Wesley, Allyn & Bacon, Benjamin Cummings, Longman, or Prentice Hall. If not, leave No selected. You will create a login name and password later in this process. Click Next. Your Contact info Entering your contact information (if the boxes are prefilled from registering before, check that the information is current): First name, middle initial, last name. Enter a valid email address that you check on a regular basis. Note: Your registration confirmation and other important information will be sent to the email address you provide. Enter your school s zip code (US) or postal code helps create a list of schools in your area for you to choose from in a later registration step. Your academic institution Select your school from the Institution Name list and click Next. If your school s name doesn t appear, scroll to the bottom of the list and click Other. If you select Other, the registration process prompts you to provide additional information about your academic institution. Type the name of your school in the Institution box and the city where the school is located in the City box. Select the name of your state or province from the State/Prov box. If your area does not appear in the list, click Other at the end of the list and enter its name in the Other box. Select the name of your country from the Country box. If your country does not appear in the list, click Other at the end of the list and enter its name in the Other box. Click Next. Your login name and password/license agreement Enter your desired login name and password. Choose something you can remember but you don t think anyone else would request. 4

Once you are registered, you will receive an email confirming your login name and password. Select a security question and enter the answer to help verify your identity if you ever forget your login name or password. Click the License Agreement link to open and read the license agreement in the a new window. Return to the original window and click next to I agree checkbox to confirm that you agree with the terms and conditions of the license. Review your registration information in the column on the right. If everything is accurate, click Next to process your registration. If the login name or password you specified is already in use, you will be requested to enter another one. Login name/password combinations must be unique. Note: You will need your login name and password each time you log in to www.masteringphysics.com to access your online course. Keep this information handy, but protect it from view by others. Write your login name here: A confirmation page informs you that your registration and course enrollment is complete. Print this page to keep a copy of your login name and password for later reference. 3 Completing registration for instructor assignments: Course ID and Student ID If you will be given assignments from your instructor, you have two more fields to complete your enrollment. You can now log into MasteringPhysics to access your online course. To log in now, click the link for MasteringPhysics access from the Confirmation & Summary page. Then provide the login name and password from this registration. To log in later, see Logging in to MasteringPhysics on page 6. Course ID The first time you enter MasteringPhysics, you ll be asked for a Course ID. Enter the ID in order to enroll in your instructor s class. Be careful. The wrong Course ID will enroll you in the wrong course! Your instructor will give you the Course ID to use. 5

Enter your Student ID according to your instructor s instructions. Once you successfully register as a student and enroll in your MasteringPhysics course, you can log into MasteringPhysics. Instructors set the end date for any online MasteringPhysics course. You can continue to log into the course as long as its end date has not passed. AOL users cannot access MasteringPhysics using the America Online browser. However, you can log in to AOL, minimize the AOL browser, and then launch Internet Explorer (or any supported browser) separately to access MasteringPhysics. 4 Logging in to MasteringPhysics To log in go to www.masteringphysics.com. Tip Consider adding this location as a favorite or bookmark it to your browser, making it easier for you to return to the site. Click the Log In button. Type the login name and password from your registration and click Login. Note: If you ever forget your login name or password, click the Forgot your Login Name/Password? link on the Log In page. 5 Using MasteringPhysics In the left navigation bar, click assignment list. Your instructor may assign Introduction to MasteringPhysics. If so, this is an excellent way to learn how to use the program. Tip To find out more about the program, click on help in the top navigation bar. 5 Ways to Improve Your Grade in MasteringPhysics introduces you to what you need to know about the program. MP.Booklet_Student_mech.qxd 10/27/05 8:24 AM Page 9 6 Logging out of MasteringPhysics Click log out at the top right of the page. You may log out any time during your homework assignment. Your work is automatically saved so you can take a break and come back to finish a problem later. Note: Avoid just closing the browser window (especially in a computer lab environment) because this may not end your personal MasteringPhysics session. 7 Changing physics courses Your subscription for MasteringPhysics is good for two years from the time you first register. Your subscription grants you access to one physics course at a time. At the end date of your first course, you are automatically deactivated from that course. The next time you log in to MasteringPhysics, you ll be prompted for a new Course ID and Student ID. Please ask your new instructor for this information. Note: If you change instructors during a semester, you will need to have your first instructor manually disenroll you from the first class, so that you may enroll in a new class. 8 Technical support For technical support regarding registration questions, please visit www.aw-bc.com/techsupport.
