Android Application Development for Data Capturing and Mapping Land Features: A mapping and project monitoring tool for Phil-LiDAR 2.B.14 Project Michelle JAPITANA, Melbert BONOTAN, Roel DAMALERIO
Phil-LiDAR 2 Project 3 year project funded by Department of Science & Technology(DOST) Headed by University of the Philippines Diliman(UPD). One of the main objective of the project was to generate detailed resource map of high value crops of the Philippines. Caraga State University is one out of 15 implementing Agencies with project area, the whole CARAGA Region.
Project Area
CSU Project Components Developed Systems ICT Data Processing (DPC) Admin Sustains Provide Data of the Actual Land Cover Field Data Collection (FDCC)
Current State and Processes Recording of gathered data are done through the usual pen and paper manner Additional attribute to record during field surveys are photographs which adds new task to capture and record its filename to the field data sheet Manual tabulating or transferring of captured data on-site after field surveys from the data sheets to spreadsheets applications No ready visual representation of points during actual surveys for monitoring, reporting and updating.
Motivation of the Project With the current situation Field Data Collection Component facing, the project was realized to automate processes from gathering to reporting. Methods are established to foster data security, efficient conduct of field survey, fast data retrieval and reporting, paperless transaction and near real time and online updating of data for project reporting and monitoring.
Main Objective To develop an android application for data capturing and mapping land features to that can change and aid mapping and serve as a project monitoring tool for Phil-Lidar 2.B.14 Project.

Conclusion The android app dubbed as Land-Use Mapper provides high portability and convenience for data gathering that also cuts down processing time for the manual tabulation or recording of data. Cutting Edge Smartphone Technology also provided an add-on for data security. With online downloading and uploading of data; the updating, reporting and monitoring are near-real time. Mapping capabilities provides presentable visualization that makes the monitoring of the FDCC component easy and convenient. With the impacts of the Android Application in assisting the FDCC of Phil-LiDAR 2 in accomplishing their validation survey, these implies great opportunities for android application as a new mapping and monitoring scheme. Aside from developing the user-friendly app for the Phil-LiDAR 2 Project, the Land-use Mapper greatly changed the conduct of field data validation and surveying methods of the team.
