Letters of Recommendation It is the student s responsibility to ask teachers, counselors, administrators, and/or people in the community for a letter of recommendation. Give your references no less than 5 days to write a quality letter. Provide your resume and Senior Questionnaire. Essays Take time to devise a strong essay. Run a spellcheck. Check for grammatical errors. Have someone proofread your work. Gates Millennium Scholars The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) provides low income African American, American Indian/Alaska Natives, Asian Pacific Islander American, and Hispanic American students with an opportunity to complete an undergraduate college education in any discipline area of interest. Applicants must also be a citizen, national or legal permanent resident of the United States, have attained a cumulative high school GPA of 3.3+ on an unweighted 4.0 scale, have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service and extracurricular activities, and will enroll in an accredited college or university upon completion of high school. Applicants must also meet the Federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria. Research projects include the areas of animal sciences, behavioral and social sciences, biochemistry, bioengineering, mathematics, medicine and health, and several areas of biology and physics. Students are judged on research, ability, originality and creativity. Apply online at www.societyforscience.org/sts Amount: $1,000 $100,000 Deadline: November 11, 2015 Jack Kent Cooke Foundation The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation s scholarship programs are designed to encourage and support outstanding students who work hard and have financial need. Criteria include a 3.5 GPA, SAT combined critical reading and math scores of 1200 or above and/or ACT composite score of 26 or above, and demonstrated financial need. Amount: $30,000 Deadline: November 3, 2015

Prudential Spirit of Community Award The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards program is the United States largest youth recognition program based exclusively on volunteer community service. Open to student enrolled in grades 5-12. Amount: $1,000 Deadline: October 30, 2015 Vamos Scholarship VAMOS sponsors four- year scholarships to deserving high school graduates from various backgrouds for enrollment at a university of their choice. In addition, VAMOS not only supports student by paying for tuition and books, but helps with motivation and encouragement through it Mentoring Program. GPA requirement: 2.5 Apply online at http://vamosscholars.org/ Amount: $20,000/4 year program Deadline: April 1, 2016 University Scholarships The Science Academy of South Texas Art Institutes Scholarships Enter one of The Art Institutes scholarship competitions and you could earn the opportunity to attend one of their schools. Every year, talented people compete for full and parial tuition scholarships to pursue a creative degree at one of over 45 Art Institutes schools across North America. For scholarship opportunitites, go online at http://www.aischolarships.com Boston College The Boston College Presidential Scholars Program awards 15 full- tuition, renewable scholarships to outstanding students who apply to the college by the Early Action deadline of November 1, 2015. Gauranteed to meet full need for four years, the Honors Program provides an integrated liberal arts education in small seminar style classes. Fully- funded summer interships, travel, and service programs. To apply to be a Boston College Presidential Scholar, apply through BC s Early Action application process and meet the early action deadline of November 1 st. Forty Acres Scholars Program The Forty Acres Scholars Program is the premier full- ride, merit- based scholarship for the University of Texas at Austin. Administered by the Texas, Exes, this scholarship program offers a rich college experience that provides academic, leadership, and cultural opportunities within an intimate cohort of fellow scholars. You are eligible to be considered for this scholarship by applying to the university via the ApplyTexas. Visit the following website for more information: http://scholarships.texasexes.org/scholarships/forty- acres- scholars/ Harvard University Financial Aid Initiative Announced in December of 2007, Harvard has dramatically reduced the amount expected by families to contribute to the cost of their student s Harvard education. Harvard no longer requires students to take loans, and parents of financial aid recipients are asked to contribute on average from zero to ten percent of their annual income, with no contribution expected for families with incomes under $60,000. Those with parents with annual incomes of between $120,000 and $180,000 are asked to contribute an average ten percent of their annual income, with a declining percentage from ten to zero, also, for parents with annual incomes between $120,000 and $60,000.
