VETERINARY NURSING FE2014 Level 3 Apprenticeship in Veterinary Nursing/City & Guilds Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing Level 2 Certificate for Animal Nursing Assistants

Veterinary Nursing INDUSTRY INSIGHTS Greenmount offers two Veterinary Nursing courses designed to prepare students for careers in the veterinary nursing/animal care profession. The courses provide the appropriate knowledge to complement the practical skills acquired while working in a veterinary practice and also help student nurses develop their teamwork and interpersonal skills. College of Agriculture, Food & Rural Enterprise CAFRE Qualified College of Agriculture, Food & Rural Enterprise Career profile: Claire McConaghy Claire is currently Head Veterinary Nurse and Clinical Coach at Firmount Veterinary Practice in Antrim. She completed her Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing at Greenmount in 2007 and was Veterinary Nurse of the Year in 2011. I have always wanted to be a veterinary nurse, from the age of seven - I just knew! My dad is a farmer and looking after animals has always played a big part in my life but I suppose watching television programmes about veterinary nurses and what they do helped me finally decide this is the right career for me. I love everything about my job especially hand rearing young animals and weight clinics for pets with diet and weight problems. I am also very involved in re-homing animals and I ve set up a Facebook page to help do this. Veterinary nursing is a wonderful career and I would recommend it to anyone. The courses in Greenmount are fantastic preparation and provide a sound basis to build on. I would advise anyone interested in a career in veterinary nursing to just go for it. 134 135

Alicia Scott I am from a farm in Donegal and have always been interested in animals. I also learnt to ride horses as a child so growing up my life centred around animals. I attended an open day at Greenmount on veterinary nursing and thought this is what I really want to do. I got a job with Ark Veterinary Practice in Belleek which is an approved veterinary training practice and started the Animal Nursing Assistant course, which I completed in 2011. I am now a student on the Level 3 Veterinary Nursing course. The course is excellent and provides a great foundation for my day to day nursing experience. I love my job! It is so rewarding, every day brings something new and I would recommend this career to anyone. 139

Students who successfully complete the Animal Nursing Assistant course may progress onto the Level 3 Diploma in Veterinary Nursing course. Hannah Montgomery I am originally from a farming background but after school I did a Foundation Degree in fine art and design. In my final year I began volunteering with the Mid Ulster Animal Sanctuary and also with Crosskeenan Lane Animal Sanctuary. I loved working with the animals and decided to come to the Greenmount Open Day. I chatted with the staff and students of the Veterinary Nursing course and decided, yes, this is what I really want to do for a career. I enrolled on the Animal Nursing Assistant course and I also work at Glenburn Veterinary Surgery. I have learnt so much in such a short time and I am really keen to go on and complete the Level 3 course as well. I am interested in animal rehabilitation work and ultimately I would like to specialise in large animal or equine veterinary work. I love coming into the college! There is a friendly atmosphere and the staff are brilliant. They are always ready to go the extra mile in providing support and encourage me to find out things that go beyond the syllabus. 140 141
