Organization The conference will take place at the Department of Geography of the Justus Liebig University in Giessen. During the conference the participants will take part in workshops, discussions and lectures. Maps and related instruments will be used throughout the sessions. Relevant software and data will be provided. Goals The goal of the conference is to support the Afghan Geodesy and Cartography Head Office (AGCHO) in scientific methods to create the new National Atlas of Afghanistan. The capacity building will be provided by the Department of Geography Giessen. It is intended to review already compiled maps and drafts, review existing data and its structure, solve data redundancy problems, assist in metadata generation and management, give practical tips, hints and workarounds in ArcGIS, integrate freely available data to enhance topographic information, set basic rules for future data management, review findings and propose final working steps in preparation of the printing process of the National Atlas. Only skilled scientists and trainers with a profound cartographic and geographical education will guide the participants and discuss with them.
