/Rita Balla Characteristics of the Large-panel System Building of the 1960s and 1970s József Slézia /Flóra Bodnár The Golden Age of Scandinavian Design József Vadas The thesis explores the influence of large-panel buildings on city life in the 1950s, the 1960s and the 1970s also outlining the development and spread of standardized furniture systems and the evolution of the kitchen as a novel living space to foster the performance of daily chores by women. The study also touches upon those artistic trends that aspired to alter the established schemes and patterns typical of large-panel construction programs and transform them into an architectonic system that offers a more individual space for living. I am confident that the ideology behind these aspirations was definitely of good nature. However, they were not sufficient to give birth to a new way of thinking. The life of humans cannot be perceived as a predestined, economic and modern uniform solution. Since this way even the most sincere intention for improvement seems to have failed, the study is necessarily confined to discovering what the paperbased version of the adopted Soviet panel-building program looked like in reality. The thesis focuses on design in the post-war era in the Scandinavian region including Denmark, Sweden, Norway and Finland. The aim of the study is to present this successful period from the 1950s to the 1970s. Scandinavian design demonstrated to the whole world that form and function go hand in hand much the same way as tradition and progress or manual design and mechanical technology do. It also shed light on the fact that a well-designed fork on the table may be of as much significance as the beauty of the house we live in. Since beauty is something we can afford, the only thing we still need is the desire for beauty. This message of Scandinavian design has not changed since then. 126
/Virág Hamar Fashion Designers in the World of Interiors József Slézia /Bernadett Imola Káldi Cultural Strategy in Design the Vitra Design Museum József Slézia The thesis sets out to present fashion designers who were not satisfied with the improvement of people s appearance but also made an effort to make our environment more beautiful. The study introduces the development and operation of great design houses such as Armani, Fendi, Versace and Ralph Lauren. By introducing four fashion designers, the study investigates their role in furniture design in addition to exploring which designer products may have a connection or correlation with related pieces of furniture. The thesis also focuses on those trends that guide and inspire these fashion designers at the same time highlighting the main characteristics of their products. The thesis analyses the profile, structural features and strategy of the Vitra Design Museum starting with the introduction of the foundation of the Vitra AG furniture company. The unique office and home furniture programs of the company are highlighted by focusing on the activities of two furniture designers. The study also presents the unique building of the museum designed by celebrity architect, Frank O. Gehry followed by the analysis of its operation concentrating on major activities from an economic approach. Finally, some of the temporary museum exhibitions are outlined with the aim of offering a deeper insight into the operation of the Vitra Design Museum trying to understand its guiding principles, the message it communicates to the world including its efforts to develop an awareness of the concept of design with the aim of revealing the secret behind its permanent success. 127
/Zsófia Kosztán Antal Sprok Sculpture-furniture on the Edge of Design József Slézia /Blanka Lugosi Lucien Hervé and the Art of Architectural Photography Supeevisor József Vadas The thesis examines the history of sculpture-furniture starting from the 1960s. Sculpture-furniture is a distinct form of design on the periphery of art, a radical design trend that developed as a reaction to modernism questioning the marriage of simple forms and pure functionalism finally establishing a program that focuses on sculpted decorations. The concept although in a slightly altered form - can still be found in today s design. Numerous designers draw their inspiration from nature or the potential ways of using textures and forming various materials leading them to create unique, engaging sculpted works of art. The aim of the thesis is to introduce architectural photography as a distinct field of photography focusing on its history, techniques and some of its compelling features paying special attention to the works of Hungarian photographers and the Hungarian group of CIAM. It is against this backdrop that the career of Lucien Hervé, a photographer of international renown is introduced. The study concludes with presenting architectural photography from an aesthetic and philosophical approach. 128
/Katalin Molnár The Problem of the Post-modern in National and International Literature József Vadas /Motesiczky Borbála Contemporary Central European Glass Art József Vadas The thesis expounds on the problems and issues in postmodernism analyzing not only the phrase itself but also the concept and the ideas behind it as they appear in the studies of international and Hungarian thinkers. The conceptual framework is completed with the analysis of the characteristic features of American, European and Hungarian literature focusing on certain pieces of writing by Jean-Francois Lyotard, Jacques Derrida, Roland Barthes, Robert Venturi, Charles Jencks and Lóránd Hegyi among others. The thesis explores contemporary Central European glass art concentrating on the post-1950s period and the works of Czech, Hungarian, Slovak and German artists. Starting with a brief historical introduction, the study highlights contemporary glass art and its major representatives. The main focus is on studio glass including the career of renowned glass artists of this particular trend. Finally, museums hosting remarkable glass collections are also briefly introduced in addition to major art colonies and symposiums. 129
/Eszter Veres Designer High Heels/Top European and American Footwear Designers from the 1960s until Now József Slézia Within the framework of fashion and design, the thesis focuses on high-heeled shoes from top designers. The world of fashion and design is presented through a historical perspective on the major European and American designers focusing on stilettos. The study introduces the artists of four great design centers, i.e. New York, London, Paris and Milan followed by the analysis of the career of Manolo Blahnik, Spain s number one footwear designer. Separate chapters are dedicated to the distinct styles of premium brand women s high-heeled shoes, the materials they are made of and the stylistic features characteristic of various regions. The study is completed with the analysis of the findings of a series of focus group interviews designed to reveal the influence of various brands. 130 2014 / INSTITUE OF APPLIED ARTS
