Introduction VCL100MC-16 provides the functionality of a high end SDH-SONET ADM (Add Drop Multiplexer) with full drop capability. The product provides a diverse range of data and circuit interfaces in the products of its class. Digital Cross Connect at fine granularity and data switching functionality along with the modular interface cards provide carriers a very flexible and most optimized way of configuring the product in their networks. The product can be configured in Ring, Linear and architectures. The product can also be configured with equipment redundancy for all or for a selected few among the modules. These make the product ideal for backbone and high-speed links. Support for data allows carriers to combine the functionality of data switching with transport. Software Intelligence built into the equipment allows for intuitive element management using the Element Management System, which supports the full suite of FCAPS (Fault, Configuration, Accounting, Performance and Security) management. NMS (Network Management solution) provide extremely easy provisioning of circuits across the network using a point and click user interface. The management system integrates the management of other Orion Products as well, allowing easy upgradation and expansion of networks. Standard open interfaces also allow the system to be managed by third party management systems. To summarize, along with the Network Management solution the VCL100MC-16 as part of the Orion VCL100 family provide the following features: Easy network manageability Flexible Configuration Lower cost per line Easy upgradeability Support for both data and voice over SDH Higher reliability 3

Architectural Details VCL100MC-16 is a multi-slot chassis product which provides 15 traffic slots for aggregate and tributary cards. including the common cards which can be optionally redundant. These Common cards do not carry traffic and serve functions like Power Filtering, Cross Connect and system controller (XCC performs function of both the cross connect and system controller). The line cards can support STM-1/4, STM-1e, E1, E3/DS3, Data interfaces of 10/100BaseT and 10/100BaseFx and Gigabit Ethernet. The horizontal MFC (Multi Function Card) is provided at the top. In addition two Power Filter Card slots two Cross Connect and controller card slots and two STM-16 aggregate card slots. Section 3 (System Overview) provides detailed information on the cards and functions. VCL100MC-16 has 48x48 STM-1 equivalent fully non-blocking cross connect capacity at VC-12 granularity. This shall be upgraded to 64x64 STM-1 through software upgrade. Key features VCL100MC-16 provides features that are listed below: Multi-service platform: VCL100MC-16 support both data and TDM services on the same platform. Flexibility: The box can be configured as ADM,, Terminal Multiplexer or Regenerator. The modular tributary and aggregate interfaces allow the user to mix and match the interfaces as required. The box can be configured in Point-to-Point, and Ring, topologies. Protection: VCL100MC-16 provides standard protection schemes like 1+1multiplex section protection (MSP) and sub-network section protection (SNCP). 4

Reliability: High reliability is achieved by providing redundant power supply unit, Cross Connect card (which includes control and timing) and Hot-swap capacity for all the redundant cards. Configuration: VCL100MC-16 can be configured as regenerator (REG), add-drop multiplexers (ADM) and terminal multiplexers (TMUX). Tributary supports: VCL100MC-16 supports a wide range of tributaries, which include E1/DS1, E3/DS3, STM-1 optical/electrical (o/e),10/100basetx and 100BaseFx. and Gigabit Ethernet Cross Connect capability: VCL100MC-16 provides powerful cross connect software configurable at VC-12 and VC-3/VC-4 granularity. Dynamic bandwidth allocation: The rate adaptive feature of the Ethernet provided by the support of link capacity adjustment scheme (LCAS) allows easy control of bandwidth with 2 Mbps granularity for 10/100 Mbps Ethernet. VCL100MC-16 along with NMS allows the dynamic allocation of bandwidth in a hitless manner as the requirement for traffic grows for the customer. Mixed deployment support: Support for DCC-M, DCC-R, F1, F2 bytes and E1 management is supported so that Orion products can be managed within a third party network. In addition, since Orion products allow DCC bytes to be passed through transparently when required, third party equipments using those bytes for remote node management can be managed through Orion equipments in the network. Thus it is easy to deploy Orion equipment along with third part equipment in a network. 5

Applications The product can be configured in, Ring, Linear and architectures. It can be used in the core of the network to provide high-speed backbone STM16 rings dropping PDH tributaries and STM-1/4 spurs. This application can be combined with the functionality for Data switching and transport. STM-16/ OC-48 Ring STM-1/OC-3 ring STM-1/OC-3 ring 4xSTM-4/OC-12 VCL100MC-16 could also be used to provide versatile cross connect functionality to connect telephone exchanges in STM-1/4 rings in dense metro areas. Lower speed STM-1/4 rings and PDH dropped by VCL100MC-16 from this ring could connect to local exchanges. VCL100MC-16 could also provide the connectivity between Mobile Switching centers and Telephone exchanges. 6

System Overview The VCL100MC-16 is a 19 wide, 8U high chassis, in a half-depth rack allowing back-to-back arrangement for VCL100s. This chassis can be installed in both 19 and 23 rack with suitable adapters. It has 15 vertical slots, 2 of which are reserved for cross connect cards/control, 2 for Power filter units and 2 for one port STM-16 aggregate interfaces. Remaining 9 are traffic slots. It has 2 horizontal slots 1 each for management interface and fan tray unit. Linear and Ring Network topologies supported: Supports subtended STM-1/STM-4 rings.
