CALL TO ARTISTS: SCULPTURE ON SAMPLE NAME: Sculpture on Sample LOCATION: Sample Road between University Drive and Coral Springs Drive; NW 31 st Court ArtWalk DUE DATE OF APPLICATION: November 30, 2015 TOTAL BUDGET: Total Purchase Budget of $22,000 DESCRIPTION: The City of Coral Springs Public Art Program will purchase one or more sculptures for the continued expansion of public art within the City. The purchased sculpture(s) will be chosen from the thirteen existing sculptures chosen for the Sculpture on Sample Program. ARTWORK DESCRIPTION, SCHEDULE AND BUDGET Public Art Project Description Sample Road and the NW 31 st Court ArtWalk are outdoor venues to display public art for the City of Coral Springs. Along the 1 mile of roadway along Sample Road and the 1600 newly created ArtWalk, up to thirteen (13) sculptures will be temporarily displayed. Of the artworks on display, the Public Art Committee, with input from residents of the city, will select one or more pieces of artwork for their permanent public art collection. Already Existing Artwork Artists should submit pre-existing artworks for purchase. The City of Coral Springs will only purchase unique works of art, unless the series itself has a conceptual basis. Qualities of Artwork The artwork must be capable of holding its own in the temporary location and the artwork s final location at the NW 31 st Court ArtWalk or another location as identified on the Public Art Master Plan. South Florida has a subtropical climate and is hot and humid with an intense sun and seasonal heavy rain. Problems with rust and fading should be avoided. Resistance to high-speed winds is important. The artwork must be selfsupporting on an open landscape or hardscape. If the artwork is selected for permanent display, final purchase approval is contingent upon inspection for wind load and compliance with the Florida Building Code, ensuring long-term conservation of the artwork. Themes of the Artwork The City of Coral Springs theme for this year s Sculpture on Sample program is to promote the City s mission statement: The nation s premier community in which to live, work and raise a family along with its new branding, Everything Under the Sun. Recommendations of the design of the permanent site; Assistance with installation of the artwork; One public lecture in Coral Springs. Anticipated Art Project Schedule Artist Applications Due: November 30, 2015 Artist Selection: December 14, 2015 Commission Approval: December 16, 2015 Artwork Installation: December 17, 2015 Program Officially Begins: December 16, 2015 Selection of Permanent Artwork: April 16, 2016 Removal of Temporary Artwork: June 16, 2016 Artwork Purchase Budget The purchase budget established for the project is $22,000. The price will include all taxes and fees. Within the fee, the artist will make recommendations to the city regarding the design of the permanent site and present a public lecture regarding public art. The public art program will pay $1,000 to each artist selected through the program; $500 when the artwork is placed within its location on Sample Road and $500 when the artwork is removed after the program is complete. Artist Eligibility The project is open to any professional visual artist with experience implementing their ideas and work in the public realm. Artist or Professional Artist means a practitioner in the visual arts, generally recognized by critics and peers as a professional of serious intent and ability. Indications of a person s status as a professional artist include, but are not limited to, income realized through the sole commission of artwork, frequent or consistent art exhibitions, placement of artwork in public institutions or museums, receipt of honors and awards, and training in the arts. Artists are NOT eligible who are immediate family or business partners of members of the Public Art Committee, Sculpture on Sample selection committee or program staff. Application Process The application process is managed by the City of Coral Springs. The Coral Springs Public Art Committee serves as the selection committee, along with one business person and one general resident (or combination of the two) chosen by the Committee. Final purchase approval is contingent upon inspection for wind load and current Florida Building Code, ensuring long-term conservation of the artwork. Selection Criteria The Public Art Selection Committee shall consider the following issues: 1. Appropriateness of the artwork to the goals of the Sculpture on Sample project; 2. Appropriateness of the artwork to the site and site environmental conditions; 3. Experience and other qualifications of the artist; 4. Quality of the artwork; 5. Location of artist; and 6. Cover Letter: A cover letter listing experience with similar or related projects (PDF) 2. Resume. A current professional resume (PDF) 3. Images of proposed Artwork submitted as.jpeg digital images either emailed or provided on digital format. The images should be the works available for purchase. a. Digital Specifications: Each image must be labeled artistlastname_firstinitial_imagenumber.jpg. (Use 01 for imagenumber 1, calder_a_01, calder_a_02, etc). 4. Annotated List. A photo identification sheet which gives the specific project number and name, the artist's name, address and phone number, and, for each slide or image, the corresponding slide or image number, title of work, medium, dimensions, date of work, price of work and if applicable the name and location of the commissioning public agency. The locations for the artwork to be placed are between University Drive and Coral Springs Drive on the north and south sides of Sample Road. The ArtWalk is located along the north side of NW 31 st Court, two blocks south of Sample Road between University Drive and Coral Hills Drive. Coral Springs Public Art Program The program was established in 2003 and is funded by public art impact fees from private developers.
