PREPARED WHATEVER THE CHALLENGES 71% of the earth is covered by water. More than 90% of the world s trade is dependent on sea freight. Nearly two-thirds of the world s population lives in coastal areas. When seaborne trade and human activities in the coastal zone expand, so do the threats. Piracy, oil pollution, illegal fishing and other criminal activities create new and growing demands on maritime security and safety. Airborne surveillance is key to maritime superiority. With Saab s new Maritime Surveillance Aircraft the Saab 340 MSA you will access a complete airborne operational system providing every tool you need to successfully safeguard your maritime domain. The Saab 340 MSA is the ideal platform for maritime surveillance, search and rescue and transport missions. An aircraft prepared to meet the challenges out there. 2 3

SECURING MARITIME DOMAIN AWARENESS Secure-AIS Saab s R4 A Airborne AIS Transponder significantly improves situational awareness in surveillance operations and Search and Rescue (SAR). Voice and Data link SATCOM The flexible and modular Satellite Communication system provide applications such as VPN, e-mail, telephone, Internet browsing and video streaming, over the Intenet Protokoll (IP). The Saab 340 MSA is a complete airborne operational system using the latest maritime products and technologies available. The heart of the 340 MSA is the Mission Management System. With a number of on-board sensors connected it gives the aircraft the capabilities required for monitoring large maritime areas day and night, in rain, snow or fog. Communication is a key ingredient of maritime domain awareness. To provide continuing communication capabilities the Saab 340 MSA is equipped with Secure-AIS data links and a reliable SATCOM system. This makes it possible to send and receive orders from/to higher command or other units in a secure way, providing them with a real-time maritime common situational picture and a fast link for orders. Mission Management System (MMS) MMS integrates multiple remote sensors and mission system components into one user-friendly, network-based data acquisition and processing framework. The system provides mission planning, real-time display of sensor data, immediate post-overpass analysis, support of any remote sensor, classification of marine pollution, automated scene analysis, computer-aided report creation, geo-referencing and GIS capability, in-flight and ground processing, display of electronic charts, redundant storage and AIS support. With the Saab 340 MSA you will access every tool you need to secure your maritime domain awareness. Wireless in-cabin network Wireless broadband system in cabin with Internet connections in crew rest area table and 220 V power supply. 360 Maritime Radar A rugged and lightweight Maritime Surveillance and SAR/ISAR Imaging Radar system delivering excellent performance and the ability to search, detect, and track multiple targets during over-water surveillance. Retractable Multiple Payload EO/IR Sensor A full high-definition multi-spectral imaging system providing superior range and imaging performance, high-definition colour in low light, infrared payload for expanded multi-spectral day and night imaging, enhanced standard definition video, multiple laser payloads and multi-mode Autotracker. Direction Finder A sensor intended for search and rescue operations, covering the commercial airborne and maritime VHF radio band and Cospas Sarsat distress signals. Tactical Communication System A tactical radio system that provides total communications capability in a complete multi-band solution, enabling you to talk on law enforcement, military, medical, marine, SAR and public-service frequencies. 6 7
COMMUNICATION BEYOND BOUNDARIES The ability to detect, classify and identify maritime objects and to handle information effectively in real time is key to maritime domain awareness. To ensure these capabilities the Saab 340 MSA is equipped with Secure-AIS and SATCOM providing both voice and data link communication. The mission system is also integrated with the Cockpit Multi Functional Display and Flight Management System, which makes interaction with the pilots reliable, agile and efficient. Detection > classification > identification Beyond-Line-of-Sight: satcom Line-of-Sight: VHF/UHF Secure-AIS THIS IS HOW IT WORKS When an unidentified object is detected or a distress call is received the radar sources are coordinated and a waypoint marking the object s location is sent to the Flight Management System. As the aircraft closes in, radar and the SAR direction finder, together with AIS or the electro-optical sensor s high-resolution TV-camera, are used to pick up emergency signals, detect debris or people in the water and identify the object or ship. The position is sent via SATCOM, video is streamed to the ground and other assets. After the incident a report is prepared and sent to the ground. All data gathered is stored in a database. 8 9
