2 What is Maritime Domain Awareness? Maritime Domain: All areas and things of, on, under, relating to, adjacent to, or bordering on a sea, ocean, or other navigable waterway, including all maritime related activities, infrastructure, people, cargo, and vessels and other conveyances. Maritime Domain Awareness (MDA): The effective understanding of anything associated with the global maritime domain that could impact the security, safety, economy or environment of a nation. 3 Why is MDA Important? Maritime Domain Awareness is a component of and key enabler for Maritime Security. Maritime Security (MARSEC): The condition in which a nation s sovereignty, interests, resources, and citizens and their property in the maritime domain are protected, and able to recover rapidly from threats including but not limited to terrorism, weapons proliferation, transnational crime, piracy, environmental destruction, and illegal seaborne immigration. 3
