Magical Enchanting The magic of wine, history, beautiful countryside, meeting people, a lifestyle Burgundy The spell has been cast! Let yourself be enchanted A journey through time With its châteaux, villages with prestigious names, the remains of a varied past and a wine region born from the expertise of monks, this former land of the Dukes of Burgundy offers the delightful impression of being both here and elsewhere. A new approach to happiness The formula is simple: Travel the countryside, take a walk through the vineyards and stop off in the cellars to discover hearty wines, try the exquisite gourmet food, enjoy the friendly atmosphere and appreciate every one of these precious moments. Special Favourite Sunrise on the Saint Romain cliffs The night-time magic of the light trails The Hôtel-Dieu: the magic of the past, still alive today 3

Studio Image & Associés 4

Patchwork A patchwork of landscapes Vineyards, rivers, lakes, canals, ponds, cliffs, forests the Pays Beaunois offers a huge variety of contrasting scenery. and a wide choice of leisure activities A variety that offers scope for a wide range of activities. Shades of the Pays Beaunois The plain and its pastureland, fields dotted with cows and sheep, vineyards and forest form the setting for your walks, while there s climbing on the cliff faces for the more daring. There s also a choice of water activities: swimming, fishing, barge excursions, etc. And if you d rather have your head in the clouds, why not try a flight in a balloon or micro-light? The Grands Crus, on foot, on a bike or by car The D974, used by cars, the paths for walkers and the Vineyard Trail for cyclists offer an opportunity to visit the vineyards and travel through some very famous villages. Everything s possible: choose your own pace! Special Favourite Through fields and pastures daydreaming on the water s edge! Along the Canal du Centre Santenay: The Sorine mill (named after the owner), the only windmill in the wine-growing region of Burgundy Unspoilt, protected countryside 5

Local people Véronique Drouhin The land in Burgundy finds its expression through the vines; we are devoted to revealing its most subtle secrets. François Rocault As I show you round the vineyards, I tell the story of the Hautes Côtes, of the landscapes shaped by our fathers, and I try to pass on the spirit of the place. Nathalie Molinier Grapes are a source of well-being. I make natural cosmetic products that I use on clients in my spa. An aura Wine is the high point of our culture and the result of work by craftsmen; of conviviality it s accessible to everyone and in Burgundy is a symbol, first and foremost, of getting together and sharing. Burgundy gold The Pays Beaunois is known throughout the world, thanks to wine: tasting lessons, vineyard tours, visits to cellars, wine châteaux, everything is done to ensure that you get to know as much as possible about wine, vines and winegrowers. Major events de Cep en verre à Nolay in Nolay over an August weekend: rally, craft exhibitions, tasting, activities and entertainments the grape harvest in September, for a wonderful, friendly atmosphere Helping people meet each other and celebrate The winegrowers will be delighted to tell you about their work and offer you a mâchon (local snack) by the barrel. Or if you d like to see what local celebrations are like, come and join us for the grape harvest! It ll leave you with memories that ll never fade! Special Favourite the Hospices de Beaune Wine Auction, every third weekend in November Learn about wine tasting, in an hour or over a tailor-made weekend (beginners or the more experienced) the Meursault vineyards A festive atmosphere at the Cousinerie de Bourgogne the winemaking Brotherhoods rganise very lively banquets throughout the year (enthronements) 7

Local people Colette Hervet Our outstanding terroirs are the work of man and nature, shaping the landscape, building the villages and creating a unique cultural ensemble that candidates for the inscription on the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Jocelyn Titren, Art is everywhere in the Pays Beaunois: in the galleries, in a garden, near a church, today s artists are creating tomorrow s heritage. F Vauban 8

Traces The Pays Beaunois contains many traces of its past in the famous monuments of the past that we can visit and the remains preserved by Man. History leaves its traces The Hôtel Dieu and the ramparts are reminders of 15th Century Beaune. In the surrounding area, the Middle Ages can be seen in our fortresses and abbeys. The centuries roll on, their story told by the wine châteaux, manor houses, etc. Major events Les Chemins de Lumières à Beaune (Light Trails) in Beaune (April, July, August, wine auction and December) Reminders of a cultural heritage This heritage may be found in a meurger (pile of stones) or a cabotte (stone hut); the past comes to life in the walls of the old Burgundy houses, the follies, wash-houses and cellars: you ll find plenty of surprises on your walks. Special Favourite Cours Eau Jardins, courtyard and garden festival between June and September Temporary and permanent exhibitions of works of art in the wine châteaux La Rochepot, a medieval fortress that looks like a fairytale castle (visits from April to November) L Hôtel-Dieu de Beaune (Hospices de Beaune) The amazing sight of our illuminated monuments 9

Local people Eric Pras Perpetuating the Lameloise saga the tradition of a Michelin three-star restaurant in Chagny means offering a cuisine based on heritage, evolution and refinement, with a touch of extravagance. Dominique Loiseau In Beaune, I wanted to carry on the Bernard Loiseau tradition and give prominence to Burgundy specialities. Denis Charles In winter I like to share my love of Burgundy truffles. They smell of the undergrowth and have a hazelnut taste. Christian Poulleau Above Nolay, we rear magnificent Charolais cattle that are known worldwide for the quality of their meat. 10

The art And good eating isn t the least of the pleasures that Burgundy has to offer: quite the opposite! of good eating There s a varied choice, outstanding local produce and stunning cuisine From light meals to banquets When it comes to mealtimes, there s plenty of choice. As a couple, with family or friends, a cheeseboard on the terrace, a family inn, table d hôte, theme or gourmet restaurant There s something for every taste. Major events Pains Vins Fromages: a friendly bread, wine and cheese tasting in the Halles de Beaune in October Chagny market: every Sunday morning Get a taste of Burgundy To find out what Burgundy s all about, try our gougères (cheese pastries) and jambon persillé (ham marbled with parsley), enjoy a bœuf bourguignon, snails or œufs en meurette (eggs in a wine sauce), taste our many cheeses and end your meal with a blackcurrant dessert. A mouthwatering tradition! Special Favourite Into the kitchen! The chefs with or without hats offer theme-based lessons with the option of a visit to the market (adults and children) Burgundy s last remaining smallscale mustard manufacturer, Maison Fallot, opens its doors in Beaune for an entertaining gourmet tour. Put your apron on and adults and Studio Image & Associés children to the stove! 11

Atelier Photo Muzard 12

Local people Geoff Sandquist Cycle round the villages, stop off to explore a little market, try a plate of jambon persillé on a terrace magical! Exploring The varied sites in the Pays Beaunois offer an inexhaustible supply of excursion options. a varied region Whatever your destination, it will take you through magnificent countryside. Adventure beckons on the cycle tracks Follow the Voie des Vignes through the Côte de Beaune vineyards and visit charming villages, viaducts and protected sites. If you prefer the flat, head along the Canal du Centre, admire the locks and listen to the lapping of the water Set off fit as a fiddle and expect to be surprised Walk through vineyards and valleys, plateaux and forests, combes and ridges on marked, secure, well-maintained paths that will offer you scents galore and breathtaking views. Sandrine Serrigny I wanted to help people explore the region in a different way: for example, the village of Pommard by horse-drawn carriage. Major events Special Favourite Patrick Laden The Pays Beaunois is a walkers paradise: 600 km of paths through the vineyards, alongside cliffs and rivers. Walks through the vineyards punctuated with local food and wine tastings and musical entertainment: in Beaune, in May: Saveurs des Vignes in Ladoix Serrigny, in July: Rando Gourmande in Savigny, in September: Savigny en tous sens At the canal port of Chagny Cycling along the Cozanne, in the heart of the Maranges Get off the beaten track! in Pernand Vergelesses, in October: Les tréteaux de Pernand 13

Atelier Photo Muzard 14

Local people Olivier Leflaive I ve always liked welcoming people to our cellars and table d hôte, so I came full circle by opening a character hotel and introducing visitors to the work we do on the estate every morning. Jean-Louis Martin What I enjoy as a host is telling people about my Burgundy : a well-chosen restaurant, an outing with a difference, etc. A welcoming Whether you re just passing through, on holiday or on business, as a couple, with family or in a group, region everything has been designed to ensure that you have a wonderful time. A certain idea of hospitality Burgundians like to get together around a table, a barrel or a bottle. So why not join them share a delightful moment of conversation and celebration. They re friendly people, they ll be delighted to welcome you into the circle! The wide variety of activities on offer in the Pays Beaunois make it a tourist destination for every generation. This is reinforced by the huge choice of accommodation: character hotels, chain hotels, gîtes, guest rooms, in town or country you re bound to find the right option for you in our region. Major events Winegrower visits, celebrations in villages and wine cellars: and a head for business With its reputation and the quality of its welcome, Beaune and the surrounding area are becoming increasingly popular with companies looking for an idyllic setting. Conferences and seminars are organised in magnificent wine châteaux and prestige hotels. With its conference centre, Beaune also offers a full range of reception facilities. The development of secondary activities such as wine tastings and cellar or vineyard tours has also helped to boost business tourism in the Pays Beaunois. Saint-Vincent Tournante (January) Du côté des Maranges (march) Bienvenue à Savigny (may) Le Printemps de Monthelie (may) Le printemps du Crémant in Beaune (may) Printemps de vignes et villages in Saint-Romain (may) Elégance des Volnay (june) The winegrowers are delighted to welcome you to their cellars Coup d œil, coup de cœur in Auxey Duresses (october) The Conference Centre hosts major business events throughout the year 15

G. Brébant 16

Local people Wine, gastronomy and other delights There are many events throughout the year, from the famous Hospices de Beaune Wine Auction and Saint-Vincent Tournante to more modest happenings. The winegrowers come together for the occasion, private cellars and major wine houses open their doors, walks are arranged, the brotherhoods organise banquets and there s plenty of activity and entertainment for children and adults alike. Cultural diary The Pays Beaunois has always been closely linked to wine, but it s also a great supporter of the Arts, hosting music, film and sculpture festivals and much more besides Anne Blanchard My family roots and my love of music prompted me to set up a Baroque Opera Festival in one of the finest architectural sites: the Hospices de Beaune. A cultural Experience and share and festive diary great moments of excitement Olivier Turpin It must be said that the Burgundians like to party! Our Burgundy brotherhoods organise banquets with songs, fine speeches and the enthronement of new ambassadors. The International Baroque Music Festival in Beaune Jazz à Beaune, a swing, Epicurean atmosphere Major events Bach to Bacchus Chamber Music Festival in Meursault: three weeks between July and August Ciné Rétro in Beaune in August: a festival of the silent films of the 20s; the films are accompanied by a pianist Les moments musicaux, in Chagny, end of August: classical piano recitals at the Théâtre des Copiaux Jazz à Beaune, for two weeks in September with an off programme (free concerts, exhibitions, activities, etc.) Beaune s film festival 17
