INTRODUCTION Using essential oils in your body scrub is such a lovely way of combining both the scents of the oils but also the therapeutic benefits for each oil, as well as treating your skin. Essential oils have been around for centuries as remedies for natural healing and are still popular in today s world. They have such a raft of therapeutic benefits which work physically, mentally and spiritually. There are oils which are a revitalising pick me up and others which help unwind the mind and relax you. It s all about having fun and experimenting with essential oils. Yes, there are a few rules to follow but the more you play around with them the more familiar you will become with what you can and can t mix. You will also come to know what you do like and what you do not like. The recipes that I have included are based on potent essential oils. If your oils aren t as potent, add more and make sure you are happy with the scent. Be aware though that too much oil could irritate your skin. 2
BASIC RULES There aren t too many rules here but here goes: Do not use more than 3 oils in your mixture. Why? Because you don t want to overpower and confuse the scents. You want the scents to complement each other and work well in synergy. Generally: Citrus oils blends well with spicy and floral oils Woody oils blend well with floral oils Green oils blend well with citrus oils Examples of each of these 5 groups are: Floral lavender, geranium, jasmine, rose Citrus lemon, grapefruit, orange, bergamot Spicy cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, pepper Woody cedarwood, rosewood, patchouli, sandalwood Green peppermint, chamomile, eucalyptus, rosemary 3
CARRIER OILS A carrier oil is an oil in which you add the salt or sugar to. It is the nourishing part of the body scrub and designed to moisturise your skin and leave it feeling silky once the abrasive scrub has rubbed off all the dead skin cells. Any oil will work in a body scrub and the options are: Olive oil grapeseed oil Vitamin E oil Almond oil Coconut oil Jojoba oil Sunflower oil Wheatgerm oil Peanut oil Avocado oil Apricot oil Soy oil For dry skin, an option could be to use jojoba or olive oil as these oils are nourishing. For oily skin, apricot kernel oil is an option, and if you have sensitive and problem skin try something like soy or grapeseed oil. If you do not want to use oil, try fragrance free water based lotion instead. 4
HOW TO MAKE BODY SCRUB Making your own body scrub is easy and will take minutes if not seconds. All you need is a mixing bowl, a measuring cup, a spoon to mix the mixture and your essential oils if you are planning to use them. Have an airtight container nearby to put your mixture into. Remember, this is meant to be fun, pampering and best of all cost effective!
