REGIONAL CENTRE FOR SPACE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION FOR LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN-CRECTEALC CRECTEALC JUNE 17th, 1994: STATEMENT BY THE CHAIRMAN OF COPUOS I have the pleasure to inform you that the countries selected by the United Nations to host the Centre for Space Science and Technology Education for Latin America and the Caribbean Region - Brazil and Mexico - have notified the Secretariat of the conclusions of negociations ns with a view to its establishment. The Secretariat of the Centre - wich is to be located initially at the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) of Brazil and to have a Secretary etary- General of Mexican nationality - will rotate every fours years between Brazil and Mexico with each campus begining activites simultaneously usly under the coordinated guidance of the Board of Governors.

REGIONAL CENTRE FOR SPACE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION FOR LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN-CRECTEALC CRECTEALC PRINCIPAL GOAL: The development of skills and knowledge of university educators and research and applications scientists, through rigorous rous theory, research, applications, field exercises, and pilot projects in those t aspects of space science and technology that can enhance social and economic development in each country. INITIAL PROGRAMMES SHALL FOCUS ON: remote sensing and geographic information systems, meteorological satellite applications, satellite communications and global-positioning systems space and atmospheric sciences

REGIONAL CENTRE FOR SPACE SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY EDUCATION FOR LATIN AMERICA AND THE CARIBBEAN-CRECTEALC CRECTEALC The Structure of the Latin American and the Caribbean Centre is as follow: the Governing Board-is the principal policy-making organ of the Centre, shall meet at least once a year; the Advisory Committee- shall be composed of experts in the field of space science and technology in government, private industry and the academic and scientific communities in the region, ; the Secretariat and the Secretary-General General-The seat of the Secretariat, at this moment is located in Mexico, will be rotated between Brasil and Mexico every fours years, a period that could only be renewed once for another period of four years if the Governing Board so decides. The Brasil Campus Director is Dr. Tania Maria Sausen; The Mexico Campus Director is Dr. Jesus Gonzales. Each Campus shall prepare its own annual programmes and budget, to be submitted through the Secretariat to the Governing Board.

Interaction with GEO CB Activities WGEdu is engaging closely with the activities of the GEO Capacity Building Committee, thereby supporting the space-based earth observation component of GEO CB activities. WGEdu Annual Remote Sensing Workshops Geotehcnologies for Natural Disaster Monitoring The next (4th) Workshop in this very successful series will take place in Santa Maria, Brasil Thailand in the period of 29 to 31 March, 2010, hosted by INPE-CRS/GEODESASTRES-SUL in partnership with Campus Brasil/CRECTEALC and supported by USGS.

WGEdu Annual Remote Sensing Workshops Geotechnologies for Natural Disaster Monitoring Objective: to provide attending practitioners and educators with new knowledge and information about important techniques and technologies for applying remotely sensed data for monitoring natural disasters in Latin America. The Workshop will include theoretical classes and hands-on component, where attendees will access remotely sensed data (mainly free data) and GIS software packages (mainly free softwares). The workshop will focus on the three main natural disasters in Latin America: Flooding;
