Reading Program Options The endorsement program and degree program in reading are open to individuals who have completed the appropriate prerequisite degree-bachelors or mastersand who wish to extend their knowledge of reading and in reading instructions by engaging in an in-depth investigation or literacy and literacy instruction. Students may engage in either full or part-time study. Graduate Reading Programs at Bowling Green State University Pre-K-12 Reading Endorsement Certificate Program For educators focusing specifically on positions as reading teachers at the early childhood, middle childhood or adolescent/young adult level. The Ohio Board of Regents requires between 9-12 semester hours of pre-requisite reading coursework prior to admission to a reading endorsement program. The endorsement is attached to the existing teaching license. Note: This sequence of courses (EDTL 6200, 6210, 6220, 6260, and 6280) may be completed during the Literacy Institute or during the regular academic year. The endorsement requires passing the state approved licensure exam. Although Institute students are not required to enroll in the M.Ed. program; the Institute may act as a catalyst for pursuing the M.Ed. in Reading. Admissions & Applications Information Admission Policies Application deadlines are strictly enforced by the Graduate College. Applicants who don t meet the deadlines can be enrolled as a guest student and then transferred to regular admission. Full time graduate students will begin their programs of study during the summer term. A 2.7 grade point average is required for regular admission. All materials, including GRE scores, must be received before assistantship decisions will be made. Admission Procedures Applicants must submit the following materials to be eligible for admission. A complete application available from the Graduate College (Mc Center). Electronic application forms are available online: https://www.applyweb.com/apply/bgs ug/. Two sets of OFFICIAL transcripts of all prior undergraduate and graduate study. Report from the Praxis II Principles of Learning and Teaching test taken within the last 10 years or Ohio Assessment for Educators Pedagogy score. Three letters of reference or recommendation forms including one from a person familiar with the applicant s academic ability and one from an individual familiar with the applicant s professional experience. A one-page hand-written paper explaining the applicant s five-year professional goals. International Students will need the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score reports. Graduate Assistantships Graduate Assistantships are available for students who wish to engage in full-time graduate study. The candidate s assistantship responsibilities and funding levels will vary according to teaching experience and academic level. An undergraduate grade point average of 3.0 or higher is necessary to be considered for a graduate assistantship. To be considered for an appointment as a graduate assistant, contact Dr. Cindy Hendricks to schedule an interview. Graduate assistantships: Include a tuition scholarship that assists with the instructional fees Provide a nine-month stipend. Provide a discount at the university bookstore. Decisions about assistantships are usually made in March for the next academic year. Therefore, applications should be made on or before February 1. Individuals who fail to meet the February application deadline will be considered for an assistantship after the deadline only if funding becomes available. 2

Download the "Initial" teaching license application directly from the Ohio Department of Education web site: http://www.ode.state.oh.us/teaching- Profession/Teacher/Certification_Licensure/application.asp Follow the directions on the application. Complete the entire application form. On page 2 at the top mark "Adding a Teaching Field to an Existing License" In the next section indicate the "Reading" endorsement number "059902." Attach a money order or check made out to "Ohio T.E.C." (money orders are processed faster). Attach a photocopy of all pages of the Ohio Assessment for Educators score report you received (currently tests 038 and 039). Attach a stamped, self-addressed, business-sized envelope to send a letter to you verifying the application has been forwarded to the Ohio Department of Education Bring/send the completed application; money order or check; copy of the score report; and envelope to Ms. Janet Hammersmith, Office of Student and Academic Services, 102 Education Building, BGSU,. BGSU will verify your eligibility for the endorsement, sign the application, forward the application and fee to ODE, and mail the confirmation letter to you. Once you received the confirmation letter from BGSU, you can anticipate in 2-3 weeks the endorsement will be mailed directly to you. Master of Education in Reading Courses EDTL 6100.
