1 College of Education and Human Services Graduate Level Initial Teacher Prep Program Adolescent/Young Adult, Middle Childhood, and Multi- Age Licensure Program Overview and Admissions Instructions Persons with a bachelor's degree from an approved college or university who wish to work towards an Adolescent/Young Adult, Middle Childhood, or Multi- Age teaching license in an intensive, professional program and who are able to make a full- time commitment for twelve months may be eligible for participation in a program offered by Wright State University. Please note: the program begins once per year in the summer semester and is completed at the end of the following spring semester. Prior to admission to this program, candidates must have completed appropriate content coursework and pre- requisite Phase I education courses and school placements. A grade of C or better is required in all coursework. Additional admission requirements include a 2.7 cumulative undergraduate grade point average (GPA) and passing scores on the appropriate state mandated licensure examinations (see below). Petitions to be admitted with less than a 2.7 GPA and/or low scores can be submitted with your Graduate School application. Candidates will take most courses as a cohort group regardless of teaching field. University classes will be held twice a week, along with 2 to 3 days per week in a public school classroom. Upon successful completion of all required coursework and the state mandated licensure examinations, candidates may be eligible to apply for an initial Ohio License. In addition, the state of Ohio requires licensure applicants to pass a state and federal background check to qualify for teacher licensure. Step 1: Visit with a Teacher Licensure Advisor Make an appointment with one of our advisors to learn about the program and to learn about content coursework and Phase I education courses and school placements required prior to admission into the program. Advising information is posted at Step 2: Request a Transcript Evaluation (if needed) If you are completing (or have completed) one of the WSU bachelor degree programs that are designed to deliver content knowledge, then you have completed all the necessary content and Phase I requirements. Please proceed to step 6. If you completed a bachelor degree from another college/university or completed a bachelor s degree at WSU other than those mentioned above, you must request a transcript evaluation so that we can determine what (if any) content courses and Phase I courses and school placements must be completed prior to admission into the program. Proceed to step 3. Step 3: Apply for Admission to the University to Complete Pre- requisite Courses and School Placements In order to complete required content and Phase I coursework and school placements (as determined by the Transcript Evaluation process), candidates must apply for admission to the university through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at admissions. When completing the admission application, indicate that you wish to be a licensure candidate. The major you should indicate is based on the grade range/subject area you plan to teach: Grade Range/Subject Adolescent/Young Adult (grades 7-12) - all subjects Middle Childhood (grades 4-9) - all subjects Multi- Age (grades P- 12) - Spanish, French, German, Visual Arts Major CTAYA- PRE (subject area) CTMIDCH- PRE (two subject areas) MULTILIC- PRE (subject area) Step 4: Request a TK20 account. TK20 is an assessment; accountability and management system to help colleges and universities meet requirements for accreditation. Candidates will use TK20 for a variety of things, including a program portfolio, various course assessments and all field placement documentation. Requests for an account can take 3-5 days to process. The link to the request form is available at Step 5: Complete Pre- requisite courses and School Placements Register for and complete all required courses and school placements as documented on the Transcript Evaluation. A grade of C or better is required for all courses. Step 6: Successfully Complete the Appropriate State Required Licensure Examination(s) Candidates must submit a satisfactory score on the state mandated content area exams. Candidates pursuing licensure in Adolescent/Young Adult (all subjects), Middle Childhood (all subjects) and Multi- Age (Visual Arts only) must pass the appropriate state of Ohio mandated content area exams. Contact a Student Services advisor to determine the appropriate numbers and exam registration information.

2 Step 6 (continued) Candidates pursuing licensure in Multi- Age (French, Spanish or German) must pass the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) and the Written Proficiency Test (WPT). Registration and testing information is available at A score of Advanced Low is required on both the OPI and WPT exams. Please note: This score is higher than that required by the Ohio Department of Education. Candidates will need to test several months in advance of the application deadline to receive scores on time. IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING EXAM SCORE REPORTS: When registering for the appropriate content area exams, you should request that your scores be sent to Wright State University. You will be notified by the testing agency when your report is available. Please print one copy of the score report and deliver it to the Office of Student Services, 378 Allyn Hall. You should also print one copy for your personal records and/or save the score report (in PDF) form to your computer. OPI/WPT: OPI and WPT score reports are only delivered to the testing candidate. Please print a copy of the report and deliver it to the Office of Student Services, 378 Allyn Hall. For both exam types, the Office of Student Services will provide a copy of your score report(s) to the Graduate School to be used in the university admissions process. Step 7: Apply for Admission to the WSU Graduate School (due March 1st) Candidates for admission to the program must apply for admission to the university through the Graduate School ( school/admissions/apply- now). Please include your subject area(s) in parentheses. Evaluation: The writing sample is one item considered as part of the whole admission process. It is up to the discretion of the selection committee to determine how the sample will be evaluated. The Admissions Committee may evaluate writing samples prior to the review of the candidate s application or the sample may be read as part of the committee review or interview session. Writing samples are evaluated primarily based on sentence structure, spelling, grammar, word usage, and basic writing skills. Content is important but not the primary purpose of the writing sample. We urge students who feel they may need assistance with writing to visit the University s Writing Center in 031 Dunbar Library ( ).! Special Circumstances: Students who have disabilities requiring special consideration shall be accommodated through the Office of Disability Services, located at 023 Student Union ( , TTY ). Any modifications of the above stated policy and procedures would be noted with the writing sample. Exceptions to the above process may be made with the approval of Chris Murphy, Assistant Dean ( ).
