CogAT Quantitative Battery The Quantitative Battery measures quantitative reasoning skills; flexibility and fluency in working with quantitative symbols and concepts; and the ability to organize, structure, and give meaning to an unordered set of numerals and mathematical symbols. These reasoning skills are significantly related to problem solving in mathematics and other disciplines.

Changes in Assessment Design TESTING THEN Multiple Choice Memorization Information Without Context TESTING NOW Read, Write, Reflect Analyze, Show Results Information in Real-World Context

Math: Grade 3 Sample Item This a fairly traditional fraction task in a computer-based setting. Unlike traditional multiple choice, it is difficult to guess the correct answer or use a choice elimination strategy and there is more than one correct solution. Unlike paper and pencil tests, students can create a visual representation even though the task is scored automatically.

Math: Grade 3 Sample Item Second part of multi-step problem, and, unlike traditional multiple choice, it is difficult to guess the correct answer or use a choice elimination strategy.

Math: High School Sample Item Item has two possible solutions Students have to recognize the nature of the equation to know how to solve Technology prevents guessing and working backward

ELA/Literacy: Grade 7 Sample Item Students read the text that introduces the topic Items are designed to help students gather information from the texts to lead to the final writing prompt Items require different types of responses to allow students to demonstrate a command of evidence with complex texts

ELA/Literacy: Grade 7 Sample Item Claims Earhart and Noonan lived as castaways on Nikumaroro Island. Earhart and Noonan s plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean People don t really know where Earhart and Noonan died. Part A: Highlight the claim that is supported by the most relevant and sufficient facts within Earhart s Final Resting Place Believed Found. Part B: Click on two facts within the article that best provide evidence to support the claim selected in Part A.

ELA/Literacy: Grade 7 Sample Item

PARCC Results PARCC performance levels describe how well students met the academic expectations Level 5: Exceeded expectations Level 4: Met expectations Level 3: Approached expectations Level 2: Partially met expectations Level 1: Did not yet meet expectations The Maryland State Board of Education is determining the level or score that will be counted as proficient Note: Only participation is required for 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 29
