Volunteers enhance our ability to accomplish our goals and diversify our expertise and knowledge in the following ways: Community Outreach Participating in various Community Outreach opportunities is a great way for new volunteers to get started at Girls Inc. because it will expose you to seasoned volunteers, our message and our community. Spreading the word about Girls Inc. in the community is a critical role for volunteers. Opportunities to let the public know about the services and programs offered occur at different times throughout the year. A one-time commitment only required at special community events. Outreach events offer flexible schedules for volunteers, but usually take place on weekends during the day. Face painting, temporary tattoos, and balloons can all be part of the community outreach experience. Examples of community outreach events include: Ajax Waterfront Festival Volunteer Fairs Youth Week County Fairs & Carnivals Canada Day Celebrations Pumpkinville Santa Claus Parade Many More Leadership Opportunities: If you are interested in taking a leadership role in a community outreach event, or other second/third part events that would be greatly appreciated. A leadership role would involve supervising an entire days event including: ensuring continuity of message, responsibility for all materials (i.e. tent, table, sign, flyers), being positive and energetic about reaching out to the community. You must be a seasoned Girls Inc. volunteer and able to support both set up and take down as well as other volunteers.
Afterschool/Evening Programs for Girls Volunteers are needed to assist us in the facilitation of group workshops, after-school programs, and occasionally seminars. A commitment to support and guide girls at a critical time in their life is required. Volunteers help implement activities and serve as positive role models. Volunteers interested in becoming a program volunteer must firall programs do not run during July & August. GirlSPACE is a weekly program for girls aged 6 to 12. A minimum commitment of 1 month on Wednesday evenings from 5:30pm to 9pm is required. Located at Girls Inc. office in Ajax. GirlZONE is a weekly leadership development program for teen girls aged 13 to 18. A minimum commitment of 1 month on Wednesday evenings from 5:30pm to 9pm is required. Located at Girls Inc. office in Ajax. Beacon Street Girls is a literacy and reading enrichment book club program for girls aged 9 to 12. A minimum commitment of 6 weeks is required on Monday evenings. Our program runs in twice during the school year once in the fall and again in the winter/spring. Location in Ajax. Mind + Body is a weekly program for girls aged 11 18 that is offered in partnership with the Ajax Community Center. Offered throughout the school year, each month cycles through a 4 week rotation with each week addressing a specific topic such as: stress management, body image, physical activity and healthy nutrition.
Event Planning We are always on the lookout for people who can share their time and talents to ensure our special fundraising events are professionally presented and fun for all participants. Volunteers are needed to assist in the solicitation of sponsors, prizes and auction items; to develop promotional materials; recruit participants; and help at the event with photography, games, and registration. A commitment of 6 months minimum in event planning is required. Attendance at monthly committee meetings (in the evening), and participation in solicitation activities will require approximately 10 to 12 hours per month. Annual events include: Paper Doll Post-It Campaign May To coincide with Girls Rights Week, the paper doll post-it campaign will engage local businesses to help solicit donations in return customers write their name on a Girls Inc. Paper Doll that is posted in store. Girls Rights Week May The annual kick off celebration takes place on the 1 st Saturday in May in which community members, businesses, families, and government, are invited to learn more about Girls Inc. through presentations, interactive activity stations, refreshments, and participation of staff & volunteers. Walkathon Spring Girls Inc. is hoping to have their first annual fall walkathon in 2012. This will help to engage girls and community members while raising the profile of our organization and promoting healthy physical activity. Rethinc Girls Conference November Girls Inc. hosts an annual workshop style conference that centers on a theme designed to advocate for girls in our society. In 2012 the conference focused on Economic Literacy and the 2013 conference will highlight women in technology Christmas Party December Girls Inc. hosts a Christmas party for girls and their families each year. Volunteers are needed to help plan, prepare food, giveaways, prizes, and invite participants. *New ideas for community outreach and fundraising events are always welcome, as is the development of 3 rd party fundraising events. Consider joining the Fund Development Committee to help implement your suggestions.
Committees Board Development Committee The Board Development Committee works to ensure the health, longevity and development of the Board of Director at Girls Inc. This includes check ins with Board Members about their status and involvement, touch points each year reviewing the overall successes and upcoming opportunities Finance Committee The Girls Inc. Finance Committee works monthly to ensure that all the financial aspects of our organization run smoothly, efficiently and transparently. The committee works closely with the Fund Development committee in setting financial goals in keeping with the needs of the agency. As well as, with the Executive committee in the preparation of the budget submissions to funding bodies. Budgets and ventures should be planned with that in mind and reflect a public image appropriate to Girls Incorporated of Durham Fund Development Committee Volunteers are needed to assist us with creating fund development and implementation strategies in order to diversify sources of income and program support. This includes the solicitation of community partners to raise funds as a third party on our behalf. We are also looking to increase the number and frequency of fundraising events and activities as well as soliciting the support of 3 rd party fundraising initiatives. Events Committee The Events Committee is an adjunct sub-committee of the Fund Development Committee. It was designed to oversee all major events that Girls Inc. undertakes in order to ensure consistency of quality, provide oversight, and direct communications between Fund Development Committee, planning committees and staff. We are looking for volunteers who are interested in fulfilling one of the following roles: Committee Chair, Financial Lead, Resource Manager, Community Fundraiser and Registration Coordinator. Further descriptions of roles are available upon request. Communications Committee Volunteers are needed to assist us with the development and management of marketing campaigns and promotion of key programs and projects. Currently we are seeking a videographer/film editor to produce a promotional video/s for online use; a volunteer to produce a list of media and publications for publishing Girls Inc. articles; and volunteers to take on initiatives to increase our visibility through Social Media networks.
Board of Directors The next several years promise to be exciting ones for Girls Incorporated of Durham. Girls Inc. will continue to have a positive impact on the communities of Ajax, Pickering, Uxbridge, Oshawa, Whitby, & Clarington. The Board of Directors will play a central role in this important work. Since 1984, Girls Inc. has provided thousands of girls with the confidence and selfesteem to access a bright and economically independent future, having real impact within the community. We invite you to become a part of this growing tradition. A primary responsibility of the board of directors is to participate in policy and major decisionmaking at board meetings held monthly; to be active on an ongoing basis in a committee of the board; and to be actively engaged in fund development. To be considered for a Board position volunteers must be an active volunteer at the committee level for a period of at least 6 months prior. A minimum commitment of one two-year term is required. Attendance at monthly meetings and sub-committee meeting require approximately 10 to 15 hours per month. Board recruitment occurs quarterly throughout the year however applications are accepted at any time.
Office Help Administration Volunteers are needed to assist us with day-to-day operations including placing phone calls, data entry, filing, and package mailings. Intermediate computer knowledge is required for data entry. A commitment of one day per week up to 4 hours and availability during the day is required. Bingo Volunteers Volunteers are needed to be ambassadors for Girls Inc. during the 4 or 5 times monthly Bingo sessions. You will spread the word about Girls Inc. to any bingo participants at the local Delta Bingo on Tuesdays from 11 1pm. This is an important volunteer opportunity for Girls Inc. as each session helps raise funds for our charity. A one-year commitment minimum or an ongoing commitment is preferred. Volunteers will need to attend an initial two-hour orientation/training session and additional training sessions as required throughout the year. Food For Thought (CPNP) The federally funded Canadian Prenatal Nutrition Program provides pre and post-natal care to pregnant teens and young mothers. By providing healthy food, prenatal vitamins, workshops and discussion groups, the program improves the health of pregnant women and babies. Volunteers are needed to assist at various Food For Thought drop-in sites across Durham Region. A minimum commitment of 3 hours one day per week, availability during the day and own transportation is required. Site Support volunteers are needed to help with the preparation of group snacks, assist ECE with the supervision and activities for children and/or babies, and provide assistance for children with special needs. A minimum commitment of 3 hours one day per week, availability during the day and own transportation is required.
