COURSE CORRELATION CN 610-00 is fitted into the PERSON phase of the ATS Ministry Formational Model. COURSE OBJECTIVES At the completion of the course, students should be able to: 1. Demonstrate an ability to do research in the area of counseling theory. 2. Be able to present an oral and/or written summary and critique of a selected model of counseling. 3. Articulate the principles, theory, and practice of selected counseling modalities of Christian Counseling covered in Competent Christian Counseling, by Clinton & Ohlschlager. 4. Articulate the principles, theory, and practice of selected counseling modalities of Christian Counseling covered in Christ Centered Therapy, by Anderson, Zuehlke, & Zuehlke. 5. Articulate the principles, theory, and practice of all eleven psychotherapeutic systems found in Current Psychotherapies, by Corsini & Wedding. 6. Demonstrate the ability to evaluate models of Christian Counseling in light of Biblical principles. 7. Be conversant with the principles of Christian counseling. 8. Discern what principles they will be able to incorporate into their own practice of Christian Counseling. 9. Articulate the rationale for the selection of their own approach to counseling. 10. Evaluate their own counseling and its use of the skills necessary for a counseling ministry. A significant number of the counseling models employed by Christian counselors utilize numerous techniques to be found in these theories. The student will be better equipped to evaluate Christian counseling theories by having an understanding of the source of many of these underlying methods and techniques. ISBN 0-87581-392-5 COURSE REQUIREMENTS Pre-Class 1. Read: Competent Christian Counseling. Be prepared to discuss the contents of part one and part two during the first day of class. Also read: Christ Centered Therapy, chapter s one through six and be prepared to discuss its contents. Please critique each chapter concerning its strengths and weaknesses. Be prepared to present your view of what you found to be especially meaningful and helpful in each chapter during the first day of class. No written report will be required for this assignment. 2. Read: Competent Christian Counseling, part three and four; and Christ Centered Therapy, chapter s seven through nine. Be prepared to discuss the contents of these chapters during the second day of class. Please critique each chapter concerning its strengths and weaknesses. No written report will be required for this assignment. 4. Prepare an oral presentation on one of the psychotherapeutic systems covered in the text, Current Psychotherapies, Fifth Edition. There are eleven basic theories covered in this volume. After each presenter reviews a given theory in class, be prepared to discuss the counseling model presented. Be prepared to critique each theory in light of Scripture. If there are more than eleven students in the course, then a second student may select one of the counseling models presented in this text book a second time. The oral report should be no more than twenty minutes in duration. The accompanying discussion will be ten-twenty minutes in length. The presentations will be scattered out over the week. CLASS REQUIREMENTS CONTINUED Post-Class Complete the eight-ten page paper on a selected theory of counseling you would find applicable in your ministry. All work submitted must be your own. This includes all assignments, exams, papers, and other projects required by your professor. The submission of another person s work represented as that of your own without properly citing the source of the work will be considered plagiarism and will result in an unsatisfactory grade for the work submitted, or for the entire course. To avoid plagiarism, do not copy and paste into any assignments without using quotations marks and citing in APA format the source of the material.
