1 PM 512: Special Studies in Ministry: Biblical Theology in Preaching. Masters Level Credit Dr. Mark Livingston: Professor of Church Ministries for BMA Theological Seminary Class Meetings: Tuesdays 6-9 pm on BMATS campus. Fall 2015 Professor Information: Phone: ext (best ), or Course Description: Biblical Theology in Preaching is a special studies course designed to help students learn principles, themes, and a philosophy of preaching Christ in all the genres and Testaments of Scripture. Special emphasis will be given to understanding the progressive revelatory nature of Biblical Theology, and how God has revealed his redemptive purposes throughout human history. Students will build upon that knowledge and construct sermons from various portions of Scripture that applies a Christ-centered application. Course Objectives: After this course, the student should be able to: Evaluate Old Testament texts through redemptive lenses. Construct sermons that are Christ-centered and redemptive in nature. Prove the Christ-centered interpretation and explanation of a text. Prioritize Christ-centered applications in texts when preparing sermons. Distinguish moral sermons from redemptive sermons. Demonstrate a clear understanding of Biblical Theology in preaching ministry. Course Textbooks: Goldsworthy, Graeme. Preaching the Whole Bible as Christian Scripture: The Application of Biblical Theology to Expository Preaching. Eerdmans: Grand Rapids, Johnson, Dennis E. Him We Proclaim: Preaching Christ From All the Scriptures. P&R publishing: New Jersey, * Obviously, a copy of the Bible (A literal Translation is preferred). Course Obligations:
2 To pass this course the following requirements must be met: 1. The student will take weekly reading quizzes on assigned chapters from both required textbooks. Please see the course schedule to determine assigned chapters and assigned dates. 2. Two exams will be given: A Mid-Term and A Final 3. Assigned Preaching Project: The student will be responsible to produce (in written format) a complete sermon manuscript from the Old Testament that should be 8-10 pages in length. The goal of this project is to force the student to examine an Old Testament text, apply it from a Christ-centered perspective, and then receive constructive feedback from the professor (and class) so that the student will practice and exercise applying Biblical Theology to preaching. See the course schedule for due dates. * PLEASE SEE THE ADDENDUM IN THIS SYLLABUS CONCERNING THIS PROJECT. 4. Masters Students should plan to give an oral book review (you do not need to write anything, just present a short 5-10 minute presentation to the class at the professor s discretion). Please choose one book from the Works Cited page of this syllabus. The book needs to be one that you have not yet read. Read the book, and then present an overview of the book to the class. Please be ready to present this oral book review at any time during the semester. The purpose of this assignment is to give the Master s level student the opportunity to read more beneficial and relevant works on the subject of Biblical Theology and preaching, and present the work to the class to interest them in reading the work in the future. Grade Tally: Quizzes totaled: 25% of final grade Exams totaled together: 25% of final grade Assigned Preaching Project: 25% of final grade Oral Book Review: 25% of final grade Preaching Project Addendum: You should plan on taking the following steps to complete this preaching project. 1. Pick a pericope from the Old Testament (the student may choose any text that has not previously been preached by the student).
3 2. Begin working out an outline for the sermon. Your sermon must be typed out in paper format. It will need to have the following headings so that all sermons submitted are consistent and readable by all. The outline will be as follows: a. Introduction: b. Sermon point 1 c. Sermon point 2 (and so on, please no more than 5 points). d. Conclusion 3. Turn your manuscript in to the professor on the prescribed date. 4. The professor will examine your sermon manuscript and return it to you with redemptive and biblical theological suggestions. The class will hear you present your sermon outline and discussion will follow. 5. Take the constructive criticism given by the professor and the class, and rewrite your Old Testament sermon from a redemptive perspective. 6. Turn in your final draft on the prescribed date for a grade. Misc: Please do not use cell phones in class. You will be asked to leave if you persist. You will not be allowed to use computers, tablets, and phones to surf the web during class. If a student is caught, they will be penalized. All papers should be done according to BMATS standards of grammar and style. See your student handbook for more information. Students must attend class. Class runs once a week for three hours, so missing one class is the equivalent of missing three classes on a regular college schedule. Your absences should be approved. Unapproved absences will result in final grade deduction. Students should not plan on missing exams. Quizzes cannot be made up. If you miss a reading quiz you will be able to drop ONE quiz (grace). After your one quiz is dropped the others will be counted as zero if missed. Quizzes are totaled and count as one grade.
