Course Number and Title: CE-150 Introduction to Education Semester: Fall 2015 Professor: Dr. George T. Winney address/phone: [email protected] / (760) I. COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will help the student, as a looking forward to serve the Lord in a much greater capacity in the future, in learning how to equip and prepare other s by learning basic concepts, theories, and methods of education. II. COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon the successful completion of this course, students should be able to: 1
2 1) Analyze and evaluate principles, theories, and basic concepts of education. 2) Understand and use those principles and theories to develop the best and most effective ways of teaching. 3) Identify theological, biblical, historical, psychological, and philosophical foundations of education. 4) Analyze and objectively evaluate the relative value of alternative teaching theories and methods. 5) Evaluate with an open mind and in a non-dogmatic manner the different points of view related to education. 6) Apply the principles of education to their personal study of the Bible and in the application of sound biblical doctrines in their lives. 7) Use the newly learned skills to deepen their personal relationship with the Lord. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND TIME ESTIMATES: Class Participation Requirements Weight Must attend every session* Participation in Peer Interaction/ Discussion 20% Book Review I (Due on Week #6) Book Review II (Due on Week #13) 20% 20% Final Paper (Due date: TBA) 40% Total 100% * Due to the nature of online courses, the student must be able to participate in all the programmed sessions. Extraordinary cases would be discussed with the 3
4 professor. Format for Written Assignments: TURABIAN (preferred): A Manual for Writers of Research Papers, Theses, and Dissertations (Eight Edition) by Kate L. Turabian, or MLA: Handbook for Writer of Research Papers (Seventh Edition). For the two Book Reviews: The student will write a book report (no less than 3 double-space pages not including cover page, font size 12, preferably New Times Roman or Arial). The paper must have 1) Introduction, 2) Critical Interaction and 3) Conclusions. Book Review I: Teaching to Change Lives by Howard Hendricks. Due on Week #6 sent by to Dr. Winney. Book Review II: Creative Bible Teaching by Lawrence Richards and Gary Bredfeldt. Due on Week #13 sent by to Dr. Winney. For the Final Paper: The Final Paper will be no less than 12 pages in length (not including Front Page and Bibliography), typed in MS-Word, double-spaced and font size 12 (preferably New Times Roman or Arial). The paper will have footnotes according to Turabian or MLA guidelines. The Bibliography will appear at the end. The deadline for the Final Paper will be announced sometime during the first 3 weeks of class. Note: The student will select any subject covered in class to prepare his or her Final Paper. The due date for the Final Paper will be announced during the first two weeks of class. The Final Paper must be sent by the student via to Dr. Winney on the established deadline. Content: 1. Title Page (1 Page): The title page should clearly state the school s name, 4
5 course title, the professor s name, the date submitted, your name and the title of the subject you are working on. 2. Introduction (1/2 Page): The introduction has to gain the reader s attention, increase their interest in the subject and invite them to keep reading. Include in this section the main idea of your subject. 3. Content (10-11 pages): This section is the body of the final paper. Include a summary of your own opinions with those of the commentaries. A minimum of 4 scholarly sources must be used. 4. Conclusions (1/2 to 1 Page): Do not re-state the same material you covered in the content section of the paper. Include your personal perspective or opinions on the subject and describe its relevance in today s society and contemporary ministry. 5. Bibliography: Follow Turabian or MLA formatting guidelines. V.
